New years resolutions anyone?

Mine are to be younger, smarter and skinnier =)) seriously though I was extremely fit most of my life and got back into very good shape after both kids. Over the past few years I have been through a series of shoulder surgerys that has left my right shoulder worse than ever, so I have put on 15-20 lbs all in my middle. Not good because although my 85 year old mother is very healthy, my 70 year old father has been through a summer of battling diabetes, heart failure and cancer. Soooooo my husband and I will start running 2 miles about 3 days a week and gradually work up to 5 miles. It's fustrating to me that I incorporate as much upper body work as I would like but oh well. Anyways I thought if any of you on the forum would like to join in we could have a little get fit & healthy in 2011 support on here. I know alot about diet and exercize that I could help with. I will be probably be starting spring quarter back to college to study to be a medical lab tech, "smarter part :D " but I think I can get a good start before that.

Krickette Tue, 02/15/2011 - 17:43

Haven't lost a pound...
very discouraged.
I've stuck to my diet, I've excersized, I don't know what to do. The only thing I can think is I'm not drinking enough water.

rodeoratdogs Tue, 02/15/2011 - 21:18

Well, how long have you been doing it Krickette? if you are doing everything right you should see results in time for sure, just stick with it.

Krickette Wed, 02/16/2011 - 00:03

2-3 weeks now :/
The first few days that I "started" I cheated a lot because we went out to some bars and I didn't count the points in my drinks... But since then I've been good!

Monsterpony Wed, 02/16/2011 - 01:21

I'm doing ok. I've kept up on the exercise, but haven't managed to get on the healthy diet (using diet as in type of food, not as restriction) that I would like to. I've managed to lose about five pounds. My goal is to be riding fit come spring so weight loss is secondary. I had a set back in general health this past weekend due to severe lack of sleep, but I am trying to catch up on that now.

rodeoratdogs Wed, 02/16/2011 - 09:37

Well I would just have to say that, you do get out of it what you put into it just like everything else. That being said if you just do somthing like exercize or cut out just one thing you know is bad like soda or alcohol and you stick with it you will see a difference so somthing is always better than nothing. You can get fitness down to a science but most people are not going to do that. I think exercize is so important, not matter what you diet is, and even if you diet is not perfect you will still see results, it just might take longer, but you will still feel and look better.

Random aside: I have to share this quiche recipe. I've been making it once a week and eating it breakfast, lunch, and sometimes dinner. It's a great way to have tasty, good-for-you food sitting around so you can eat that when you're hungry or need to run off somewhere instead of whatever junk food might otherwise cross your path.

Crust:
-2 cups flour (I use 1.5c whole wheat + 0.5c buckwheat)
-1 t kosher salt
-1/2 c olive oil*
-1/2 c water

Filling:
-3 eggs
-1 c lowfat milk
-salt, pepper, and thyme to taste
- ~4 cups cooked vegetables (I always use one onion and a ton of spinach, then I toss in whatever else is around such as green beans, fennel, bell peppers... anything really as long as you can cook it till it's not sopping wet)
-optional: 1/2 c cooked, minced tasty pork product of choice, such as bacon, salami, sausage...
-optional: grated dry cheese for topping (parmesan, asiago, pecorino...)

Directions:
-Whisk together flours and salt, add oil/water, knead, and press into 11-inch quiche pan (or any other container roughly that size)
-Place cooked vegetables in an even layer over crust
-Whisk eggs and milk together and pour over vegetables, topping with cheese if desired
-Bake in 375 oven for 40-45 min

*yes this is a lot of olive oil. I tried once with all whole wheat flour to use less but the crust was very difficult to handle and press into the quiche pan. I think partially substituting buckwheat or other gluten-free flour will allow one to use less, but I'm still experimenting with this. Olive oil is good for you, right?

rodeoratdogs Wed, 02/16/2011 - 21:06

Yes olive oil is great for you but the wheat flour I would avoid, I wonder if you could make it with the gluten free flour or spelt flour. I have never made quiche, but my sister likes to make it and her husband is a diabetic, I wonder if she has tried it with the gluten free??? I shall have to ask her.

Ok I just got this droid thingy so I'm busy playing with it right now. I'll take measurments tomorrow.

rodeoratdogs Sun, 02/27/2011 - 13:31

Ok my measurements are
37 bust
30 waist
36 hip
21.5 thighs
So I lost just lost 1/2 inch more on my waist and 1/2 inch on each thigh since 2 week ago. Not as much progress as to begin with but that's normal as you get closer to your goals. As soon as spring gets here my husband and I will run 15 miles a week in addition to out other work outs and that will get us the rest of the way there.
I already feel sooooo much better, am enjoying clothes shopping again, I can no longer where my tops from Christmas time as they look like tents, and I can where fitted T's again YAY!

Well I guess it's good they caught it early then, how does one get RA is it somthing that runs in the family? I don't know how hold you are so I don't know at what age it can start. My Aunt told me that joint problems run in the women on my dad's side of the family. I don't know exactly what she means by joint problems it's hard to go into it in detail with her since she doesn't speak English and I don't speak Spanish. Neither of my shoulder's are good tho. I mean they are strong and I still do stuff but I have constant cronic pain, I've just learned to live with it. My right was definitely rotator cuff and after 2 surgerys I still had a partial tear, my options were just go with that or have a 3rd surgery, and they can't repair partial tear they would have had to take it all the way off and put it back on again and I would have had to start all the way over with Pysical therapy bla bla bla, I hate it.

Dogrose Mon, 02/28/2011 - 10:07

Thanks! I only eat vegetarian and mostly all food cooked from fresh not processed. I should cut down on the chocolate though, I seem to be using it as an antidepressant at the moment. Potatoes I can live without but I like food with tomatoes in.
I really don't want to take loads of drugs forever So I'll be doing lots of research.

rodeoratdogs Mon, 02/28/2011 - 11:32

In reply to by Daylene Alford

That would be my approach from diet and exercize, it did say that vegetarian was good for RA so your already on the right track. I don't like drugs to much either, I remember they gave me oxycontin right after I had my first shoulder surgery and by the third day my head hurt so bad that it felt like it was going to blow off. Then they took it down a notch to vicodin but after awhile that made my head hurt to, so I mean shoulder pain or head pain? I think I prefer the shoulder pain. I don't see how people get addicted to that stuff????

rodeoratdogs Mon, 03/14/2011 - 11:15

I just weighed myself and I am only 5 lbs away from my goal  , I have lost 21 lbs since the 1st of January and the last 6 has been in the last 2 weeks so I definitely got off that plateau I was on :D .
I have made alot more progress faster than I thought possible, I have to say it must be the totally gluten free diet we are on, it works, we still have spagetti but we use brown rice pasta that doesn't taste any different to me.
measurements are......
37 bust
29 waist
35 hips
and one thigh is 21 and the other 21.25

Way to go!!! I have gotten extremely bored with P90X :-/ I last worked out on Thursday. I was going to workout today, but I got a new dryer over the weekend and yesterday we took out the old one and put in the new one - had to carry them both. So I'm super sore from that, and from a 4 hour mountain ride yesterday after all the dryer moving lol. I am plateaued at 150 lbs. Been there for over a month with no change. Inches have gone down a bit though. We were due for measurements on the 11th and forgot. We are still doing good with eating healthy. Had to get hubby new jeans this weekend because his old ones were falling off. Not me :-( I guess I'm gonna start walking/jogging in the morning, and then do P90X later in the day. Hopefully this doesn't get too depressing.

rodeoratdogs Mon, 03/14/2011 - 21:13

No it just did that to me too on another thread and I'm sure I didn't click the save button twice.

Anyways thanks Rusti, I'm quite shocked actually that it wasn't harder than it was at my age, jeeze I really feel and look in shape again. My husband has lost about 20lbs as well. We have been consisantly working out atleast 5 days a week and being really good about not eating wheat or sugar. We have been out twice to our favorite brewery and we have ceasars salad his with chicken and mine with blackened salmon and a pitcher of beer. Other than that we have found gluten free pasta and breads that we like so we can have spagetti and chicken sandwiches, you know the one with the pineapple. I also found a stack that I love, rice crackers with hummus.
If you keep going with somthing you'll get over that plateau Rusti, the only p90x I do consistantly is the plyo and the core one, those are great, then I mix it up with my other workouts. I still can't to push ups or pull ups to well because of shoulder pain, but that didn't stop me from getting back in shape, no matter what you do consistant work outs will get you there, and make them count, do your best and forget the rest :p haha

I'll post some in shape pics later but here is some of me and my kido, just for fun

Long time, no see ladies!

I'm finally down to about 126 (a lot better than the 138-140 I was!) and that is despite weightlifting! I'm up to dead lifting 120 pounds and back squatting about 105 pounds. Right now we're switching to more core and arm exercises since I'm a wussy little girl, so I'm push pressing 55 pounds, bench pressing 55+ pounds, and starting overhead squats (BEST THING EVER.) Hopefully soon I'll be starting kettlebells and more combination moves to get ready for crossfit. :)

I'm also feeling great that the weather is getting warmer, the days are getting longer, and everyone else is not being as grumpy anymore. I've also bought a wedding dress AND picked the bride's maid's dresses, taste-tested the catering cuisine, and picked invites. Yay! Despite being insanely busy at work (I need to take a certification test soon and I have to design a large poster for the department AND I'm giving a presentation about marmosets tomorrow) I'm thrilled.

Once the weather improves my fiance and I plan on taking our daily strolls through the historic parts of town and take up weekly hikes through the metroparks. I hope that I can finally start riding again after the wedding, when I have more time, and start more volunteering with the disabled kids learning to ride.

Springs right around the corner. :)

Yay, I'm glad you back, sounds like you are doing really great and ready for your wedding, what an exciting time. I am also ready for spring but it's been so rainy here, "classic western Washington weather", so I faked and baked a bit to get a good tan because when spring does come it will be over night. I'm ready for flowers I love doing my color pots in the spring. We have a SeeDoo Utopia wake board boat and I'm excited to be ready for boating season as well, it's much more fun when you feel confident in your bathing suit. I ordered 1 from Victoria's secret already and I have another I will order from Athleta that I just love, it's very sporty athletic looking.

:rofl I know right? I love the lyrics so true and funny, and it's got such a catchy beat, I think it's actually a commercial for "nutrilite" a recovery drink by amway *shrugs*?? Somebody asked me to be their you tube friend and I found it on her channel.

rodeoratdogs Fri, 04/08/2011 - 16:52

Just wanted to ad this pic, I didn't ever think at 46 and after 2 shoulder surgery's I would ever get the muscle and definition back in my arms and shoulder's but it's coming back, pretty emotional for me actually. My right shoulder that used to be bigger than my left because I am right handed is now smaller than my left because of the surgery's but I'm not complaining.

Third Peppermint Mon, 04/11/2011 - 12:41

Nice! Welcome to the guuuuuuuunnnnnnn sshhhoooooooowwwwwwwwwww! :HB

Haha!

Anyway, I FINALLY got my fiance on the bandwagon of me just making all of the food. We're starting with a month and then hopefully we'll just continue, which I don't see as a problem since he eats anything I make. Hopefully, I will be able to control what we both eat, which is easier than just feeding myself. Cooking for two is hard enough, let alone cooking for one!

I'm also up to 125 pound back squats. The good news is I can save myself from a burning building. I think? Bodyweight squats do make me happy/ excited. :)

Here is something weird I've noticed: Sometimes I just can't so as much as other times. Like, one week I have no problem reaching a certain weight/# of reps, but then maybe a week later it is HARD. It blows my mind. Any ideas?
