New years resolutions anyone?

Mine are to be younger, smarter and skinnier =)) seriously though I was extremely fit most of my life and got back into very good shape after both kids. Over the past few years I have been through a series of shoulder surgerys that has left my right shoulder worse than ever, so I have put on 15-20 lbs all in my middle. Not good because although my 85 year old mother is very healthy, my 70 year old father has been through a summer of battling diabetes, heart failure and cancer. Soooooo my husband and I will start running 2 miles about 3 days a week and gradually work up to 5 miles. It's fustrating to me that I incorporate as much upper body work as I would like but oh well. Anyways I thought if any of you on the forum would like to join in we could have a little get fit & healthy in 2011 support on here. I know alot about diet and exercize that I could help with. I will be probably be starting spring quarter back to college to study to be a medical lab tech, "smarter part :D " but I think I can get a good start before that.
If you eat tuna 4x/week, you might want to watch out for mercury poisoning, especially if you are considering having a child. Mercury bioaccumulates up the food chain, which tuna are very high on. "Chunk light" tuna tends to be lower in mercury than "albacore", since it tends to come from younger/smaller fish. Still, even for "chunk light" you should probably limit yourself to having it every 3 days or more ( has a table with some recommendations).

Another generic word of caution to y'all: beware of dioxins. Dioxins are carcinogenic, and can cause problems with reproductive and immune systems. They were in the news recently when tainted feed in Germany caused high levels in chickens, eggs, and now pigs as well. Your main dietary source of these is probably animal fat, as dioxins bioaccumulate and are stored in fatty tissue. Including your own. So as you burn all that fat, you will be exposing yourself to higher levels. I can't say that this is necessarily dangerous, but I would recommend against ingesting a bunch of animal fat at the same time. In other words, your sources of protein should be lean and low on the food chain if at all possible (plants, ideally). Unfortunately I don't think that organic food is necessarily going to have lower dioxin levels, but stuff like insisting on grass-fed beef would probably be a good idea. You can read more about dioxins

That's interesting, somtimes when I'm training and burning fat rapidly I get headaches, I always choose lean animal protein though and I don't eat pork. I also agree with the balanced diet part, dioxins or no dioxins.

Ugh, is that two days away? I'm doing okay, mostly learning A LOT. I haven't measuring anything yet, but I HAVE lost a little. According to me chart I've lost more fat pounds than non-fat pounds.

Krickette Thu, 01/13/2011 - 20:14

meh, im not doing so great. i gained a bunch of weight because i got super stressed out and ate way too much... but i think ive lost that and am back to where i started. not fun. i need to lose weight so bad. It's really sad that I'm jealous of my mom right now. She's going to have weight loss surgery soon...

rodeoratdogs Thu, 01/13/2011 - 21:16

My friend just had that, I think if a person has over 100lbs to loose it's not unreasonable and I really think that some people are genetically programmed to gain way more weight than others, it really isn't fair, but your young Krickette if you get in that habit of exercize and eating healthy you will always stay with it your whole life. I started working out in 1983 when I was 19 and have always exercized and stayed stayed in great shape with the exception of right after having my kids and going through my recent shoulder surgery's. Once you feel what it's like to be super fit and then get out of shape it's like the difference in being sick and well, so it becomes habit forming to stay fit, but it's a good habit.

That's why I tend not to weigh myself when I'm first training, because if you are working out with weights you will put on muscle weight which weighs more that fat so it can be discouraging, but your work should show up in you measurements.

Well I'm doing pretty well on 2/3 of my resolutions, and poorly on the third.
I've been avoiding salt pretty successfully, and am definitely starting to taste things differently. I still don't like saltless food, but I'm content with much, much lower salt levels. I'm taking about a gram of salt daily in capsule form. I'm past the raw foods thing now and that's a great relief.
I've been getting owned by the cracks at my climbing gym in the mornings twice a week (if you go at 6am there's nobody there to watch you flail around like a guppy  ). I felt like I was getting comfortable with my feet but I was still having quite a bit of trouble with hand jams and sequence. Some guy helped me out a bunch with my technique the other day though, and I think I'm finally getting the hang of the jams and how to move. Of course I completely ruined my hands because I'm climbing without tape, so they'll need to recover for another couple days before I can try again.
I'm now climbing 3-4 times/week for 2 hours each, sometimes with a 10-lb backpack, and I'm taking a bunch of protein supplement to deal with that. As of this morning I'd lost about 4lbs, which is surprising since I've been trying to gain muscle. I certainly feel stronger, although one of the fastest ways to become a stronger climber is to lose weight  I'm not used to this little recovery time though so I'm constantly sore everywhere and always really tired. Which is why I've neglected resolution #3, running to work on cardio. I figure I'll start that up once I'm able to deal with the climbing part.

ETA - I've had to tighten the leg loops on my harness by quite a bit, so I know I'm definitely losing some blubber :toast

I have actually much better luck with the cardio machines at the gym for just plain cardio. Although, my weight training is shifting to becoming more cardio as well (like, doing a front squat immediately followed by a push press) which helps. I like that the machines track heart rate so I can see how day after day the heart rate goes down and once I can't get it to 160 bpm easily I can up the resistance on the machine. Interval training is very helpful for me!

I do like how my scale does body fat % (and lbs) so I can actually chart my lean weight vs fat weight, which is significantly more inspiring.

I'm also excited because I learned that I can still do training while pregnant (when I get to that point.) I guess it has a lot of benefits, like babies not being too big, babies being leaner, mommy being leaner, mommy handling the strain of carrying a baby easier, less cord entanglement, lower baby stress, less chance of gestational diabetes (which I'm at risk for), and higher APGAR scores. I was talking to my trainer about some 65 year old women that he trains that have excellent posture and look 15 years younger because they're staying active. I've also heard good things about how it helps your bone density for less chance of developing osteoporosis.

I won't be in town this weekend, but hopefully I will remember my measuring tape to check for big muscles!

And thanks to nerd I can't wait to start bouldering again. I wish it wasn't so cold and icy here right now since the only place that's close (and free!) is outdoors.

rodeoratdogs Fri, 01/14/2011 - 09:43

Oh yeah those scales are cool, we were actually thinking of getting one of those, that would be inspiring to see yourself trading fat for muscle.
I've been working out 6 days a week. I'm doing a type of circuit training it's weights/cardio(step aerobics) together on one day fallowed by strait cardio and then bar method body workout. Bar method body is a dancers workout that strengthens then stretches a muscle to develop the long lean looking muscles of a dancer. I love this workout because no weight training or any other training has ever given me the deep muscle burn this workout does and all you need is a chair to balance on, it's amazing.
Here is a you tube clip, the instructor Burr is 60 believe it or not

Nerd, have you ever tried amino acids to help with your recovery time? I always have and esspecially now that I'm older it helps so much because I stay sore way longer than I did when I was younger, but with the Amino's my recovery time is much shorter and I can move right along. I use Amino Fuel tabs 1000 by twinlab and I also take L-glutamine.

rodeoratdogs Fri, 01/14/2011 - 20:35

Ok so here is mine.....
beginning measurements were 41 bust 35 waist 39 hips and 22 thighs
today is 38.5 bust 32.5 waist, 37 hips and still 22 on my thighs so that is a total loss of 7"!!!!! I'm Jazzed :D

Third Peppermint Sat, 01/15/2011 - 21:17

I'm heeeeere sorta. I'm still off visiting family (and going to wedding expos) and I forgot my tape measure. I'll check in when I get back tho! :D

Third Peppermint Sun, 01/16/2011 - 15:46

I'm back!

Here are my stats:

Old to New!

bust: 34" to 33.5"
waist: 28.5" to 27.5"
hips: 38" to 37"
thigh: 23.5" to 22.5"

bicep: 11" to 11.5"
shoulders: 38" to 38.5"
chest: 29.5" to 29"
calf: 14" (stayed the same)

weight: 137.5 lbs to 134.4 lbs

So far so good! :D Slow and steady does it, right?

rodeoratdogs Sun, 01/16/2011 - 16:47

Yeah! you are I doing really great, and even though you only lost 3.1 lbs from your measurements you put on some muscle so I'm sure you lost more fat than just 3.1 lbs, that with the fact that you are not heavy you are just getting in shape so your weight loss will be more slow a gradual. The reason I lost 7 inches so fast is because my weight was way over what my usual setpoint is, so it will come off fast at first and then slow down to about 2 lbs a week wich is what you did basically. I'm quite sure I still have 15-20lbs of fat to loose to get to my fitness goal.

rodeoratdogs Mon, 01/17/2011 - 14:06

Rusti, I have been doing P90X with my husband the last 3 days, I enjoyed the plyometrics and the arm workouts better than the back and chest, and although I really like my workouts much better, I still want to support my husband, he likes to do stuff together and that's sweet. I love that he's metrosexual so he's kind of acts like a best girlfriend in a lot of ways, he likes to hang out and do everything together and I really like that about him.
P90X is a good work out but I get bored with the doing the same exercizes over and over. They have a pretty good food guide that I just looked at recently, have you checked that out?

rodeoratdogs Fri, 01/21/2011 - 11:03

I took wednesday off and rode Annie since I haven't taken a day off since last wednesday. Then I decided to come back and hit it with a oldie but a goodie one of my all time favorite workouts the original advanced Tae Bo, boy I'm really feeling in my sides from the high kicks. Here is a clip on you tube, I love this work out and Billy is funny and very motivating.

Ok this may get redundant if I'm the only one posting on here, but I'm not quiting!
It's been 4 weeks now, and my beginning measurements were......
and now are...........
start 41 bust 35 waist 39 hips and 22 thighs
wk 2 38.5 bust 32.5 waist 37 hips 22 thighs
wk 3 38 bust 31.5 waist 37 hips 22 thighs
wk 4 37 bust 30.5 waist 37 hips and 22 thighs

Ahhhh my close fit so much better but I still have a ways to go, but I will get there.

I finally found some free sound information on how to eat and loose weight, this is the same principles I have been useing for years and it does work. All you need to know right here.

Monsterpony Sat, 01/29/2011 - 19:14

I am still trying to get into this. The past couple weeks have been awful for me to get anything done and I was too exhausted to stand up by the end of the day, let alone exercise (I could barely manage 20 minute training sessions with the pony 3 days a week). But hopefully things will have quieted down now and I can actually start working at this. I hope to be a lot more fit by the time riding season rolls around.

rodeoratdogs Sat, 01/29/2011 - 19:31

Yeah, well I know it's easy for me to say since I'm not working, and should beable to make much more progress before I begin school, but I just heard from my vocational councelor and have to meet with her this wednesday, eeeeeek. I haven't been in school since the 80's so I'm a little intimidated. :-S

Rusti Sat, 01/29/2011 - 21:56

Ok, I watched that video and it was really helpful! Then I found this website to determine my metabolic type. Hubby and I both ended up with type 2 - protein. Here's what it says: http://www.naturalhealthyellowpages.com…]

So they're saying we should be eating REAL butter (I bought the fake stuff, lowest fat I could find...guess that was a bad idea), whole milk (we only buy skim...), regular ol' cheese (I buy fat free cheddar...)??? Help! I really want to go talk to a nutrition specialist now lol. Also, I'm wondering why white meat chicken isn't on the list. 90% of the chicken we eat is white meat. And I love avocado...so glad they're on the list.
