Spanish Mustang colt, unsure about color.

Hello all, I'm new here, love the site. Here's my colt, born May 11th, 2009. I have been told he is black, smokey black, and blue roan. I'm leaning towards smokey black. His eyes were a blue/silver at birth and gray now. If I part the hair on his rump there are very few short white hairs underneath. But that's the only place I've found them. Also has a few brindle marks on his left side only. The hair is darker and stiffer. Mom is a Sabino Medicine Hat. She was bred in the wild so we don't know who Dad is. The line on his left shoulder is where he scratched himself and the hair is black there now. I have TONS more photos of him if anybody wants to see more. I do believe I'm going to get him tested. I went to the UC Davis website and can't find any instructions on how many hairs they need or how to send them. I know I'm going to test for red/agouti and cream, anything else I should consider, like sabino, because of the white hairs on his back?

I would just do the extension (i.g. red/black), agouti and cream. I suspect he will be Ee/aa/Cr/N (heterozygous black and cream, no agouti) making him a smokey black.

I wouldn't waste my money on the sabino test as it only indicates one marker - SB1 - leaving a lot of obviously sabino horses testing negative. It is suspected and theorized (by people who have made a study of this) that there are so many sabino genes out there, that it will be decades - if then - before all of them can be mapped.

I agree with critter, the sabino test would probably be a waste.

They usually need about 30 hairs...just remember to pull them, not cut them. It's the bulb at the end that is needed.

I don't think it would be necessary to test for herda and hypp, especially HYPP. Impressive was in the late 60's and early 70's and I think this herd has been closed since then. I suppose its possible a poco bueno horse could have been introduced before the herd was closed but the chances?....

Sire's color is the only unknown. Dam was running in a small herd of Choctaw Spanish Mustangs on private land (i.e. no domestic influence) when she was bred. So I'm 99.9% sure the sire is Spanish Mustang.

The big question would be the influence the SM made on the QH breed - :rofl , and for all we know, there "could" be an ancestor in common (how many pedigrees have blanks or so-and-so mare in them? :BH )... :bounce

HYPP was a mutation that began with impressive and HERDA began with Poco Bueno or perhaps his sire King. As far as I know there have been no instances of either mutation in other breeds (unless they are QH crosses).

Whiskey's winter coat is starting to come in, and he's almost black now, except for his face and the tan "spots". He's also got a good sprinkling of white hairs now...most of them are showing up in his flanks and up on his hips, but he does have a few along his back and one on his nose. It's been raining nonstop here for the past 6 days or so, but when it clears up I will get some new pics.
