Spanish Mustang colt, unsure about color.

Hello all, I'm new here, love the site. Here's my colt, born May 11th, 2009. I have been told he is black, smokey black, and blue roan. I'm leaning towards smokey black. His eyes were a blue/silver at birth and gray now. If I part the hair on his rump there are very few short white hairs underneath. But that's the only place I've found them. Also has a few brindle marks on his left side only. The hair is darker and stiffer. Mom is a Sabino Medicine Hat. She was bred in the wild so we don't know who Dad is. The line on his left shoulder is where he scratched himself and the hair is black there now. I have TONS more photos of him if anybody wants to see more. I was for sure he was black or smokey black. But now he's got that brown hair growing in...so I have no clue what to think! It's also very shiney/metallicy. Especially the brown hair coming in around his eyes. It's hard to tell in the pictures but in real life it's very noticeable. Could he still be black/smokey black, and the hair is just getting sun faded already? It's been between 95-100 degrees every day for a few weeks now. It's hard to resist going out there and clipping him lol...but I promised myself I would just be patient.

More pics to ponder over. People are now telling me they think he's liver chestnut. New opinions anyone? His ears are BLACK! So are the places that have shed on his legs and in his flanks. They look nothing like the areas around his eyes and nose.

I think he could be simply a faded black. He's very similar to the faded color my blue roan colt (tested Ee aa no cream) was before he shed all his baby fluff. Notice the faded color on his face.

I wanted to add that my foal was born on the March 31st so by this time was mostly shed off. The photo was taken June 2008. I think it could be possible, he would have faded to the extent of Rusti's foal if he had been born later in the year. Rusti and I live in the same area so that may also affect fading.

I still think he's faded black too. His ears appear to have a black edge in that first pic but it's just the way the light is hitting them...they are solid black all over. As far as testing goes, if I still can't tell what he is by the time he turns 2, I'll get it done lol.

Admin - on your blue roan foal, where and when did you first notice roaning? Whiskey has white hairs on his rump that aren't obvious (they're shorter than his baby fluff). I have to scratch/part the hair to see them, but he has more every time I check.

New pics. I got brave and clipped him (well most of him anyways lol) and he was very well behaved. Didn't care about it at all, actually I think he enjoyed it. This was my first time clipping a horse and I know I missed places but I wasn't concerned about it being pretty. So anyhow he has about 4 white hairs that I found. Three on his rump and one on his withers. His body is dark (not black) and he has black and tan spots, none of them any bigger than a quarter. I didn't clip his legs but I'm pretty sure they're black.

He does look liver chestnut, except, like Rusti, I am sure his legs are black. Either that or they are the darkest red legs I have EVER seen on a horse (even my sooty livers' legs were lighter than that).

As to the "white" along his tailhead and flank, that looks more rabicano than sabino to me - but as I don't have any, it's jmho.

Rusti, can you get a good clear pix of his ears - especially the rims and tips (back of the ear especially). Make sure it is a fairly closeup view (getting the backside of the ear tips is easiest when they are eating  ).

my bay mare has a bendor so yes they can - I think smokey black too but this one is interesting as I agree that Liver Chestnut and Brown are possiblities - Rusti please test !!!!! :bounce
