Spanish Mustang colt, unsure about color.

I'd say black or smokey black. The latter seems more likely given what you say about his eyes, but it's hard to know without testing.

Thanks for the replies. To those of you who think black - how can he be black and not smokey black and have gray eyes? I didn't think that was genetically possible because the eye color won't change unless the cream gene is there to lighten them.

Welcome! pretty baby and I think black as well. Foals are often born with lighter eyes, they will probably darken later. :)

Thank you. It's hard to find information about horses' eye color online...I've done lots of searching and the only thing I concluded from what I found and photos I looked at was that if a foal was born with the lighter colored eyes it meant a dilute gene was present. Oh well either way I love the little guy no matter what color he decides to be lol (fingers crossed for smokey black with light eyes though hehe).

Even if his eyes are light right now due to having a cream dilution, they will probably darken to normal brown.

It's very possible he is smokey black. It's really not very frequent I see a foal with the color eyes you describe that does not have cream, but we did have one on this very forum this year so it does happen occasionally.

Are you going to test him and let us know ?

I would like to have him tested, just haven't talked my boyfriend into it yet since he would have to pay for it. You should have seen the look on my face when he was born. The LAST thing I expected was a solid colored baby lol. He has an appointment at an equine hospital tomorrow...he's got some swelling in his right stifle that 11 days of antibiotics and 3 days of anti inflammatories didn't fix. He's acting normal, not limping anymore, so I'm pretty sure we managed to kill any infection but he will probably have to get the joint flushed. Poor little guy :-(

My chestnut filly was born with the darker blue eyes that changed to brown and no cream gene there and she missed out on the champagne and silver.

Hmph. How strange. I guess I can throw that out as any kind of indicator these days.

I honestly never even looked at foals eyes as an indicator of colour....if the eyes [i]stay[/i] diluted, that's when I take notice....

Well he is 23 days old now and yesterday at the vet while he was knocked out for xrays I looked at his eyes real good and they have gone from gray to a dark blue now. I dunno what to think lol. He also has white hairs under his longer baby fur all over his rump. You can only see them if you part the hair.

Things went great at the vet by the way. A previous vet felt the leg and told me he would never be sound again, and I might as well put him down. Needless to say that broke me in two and I started searching for an equine-specific vet. Found one 40 minutes down the road...this guy was awesome...he examined the leg, took 2 xrays, they were beautiful, clean, perfect, he said mom probably stepped on him while he was laying down, give him 4 weeks and he should be 100%.

OMG! I guess you won't be using the first vet again. :evil: :evil: :evil:

Rusti would you mind PMing me the name and location of the equine vet? I'm currently using a general vet and I like him but not sure how he'd do for something major like colic.

Hmmm,

My friend and former BO's stallion has dark grey/bluish eyes still. Several of his black offspring have them too. I thought they were kinda creepy myself, but they are definitely not "true blue" at all.

He's also frame, definitely not cream.

A few new pictures of Whiskey. When I scratch the top of his rump, short white hairs come out from under the brownish/black.....????? If I can get him to stand still long enough, I will try to part his hair and get a pic of the short white hairs. They're only on his rump. His muzzle is all black where he has shed, and some places where he scuffed his legs up are coming in all black.

The white hairs could be classic roan, LP if it is present in the herd from whence the mare came (can't end with a preposition now can we? :P), sabino, or even gray.

If its classic roan and I think sabino you will be able to see it as he sheds his foal coat. LP and gray may take longer to tell.

Now that I'm thinking about it could be rabicano as well.

I'm hoping it's roan. There are very few appys in the herd she came from. She has striped hooves but that's the only LP trait between the 2 of them. But you never know! Also I noticed today, the hair in his flanks is all white/silver...what does that mean? Normal baby thing, like his silver legs? I will try to get a good flank picture tomorrow. Oh and I don't think gray, he's shedding around his eyes and has black goggles.

Sounds classic roan to me.

Her striped feet don't count...those aren't solid-coloured legs, they're white.

Oh ok lol...I didn't know the leg color mattered. My bay Arabian gelding has 2 white stocks, 2 white feet but they aren't striped...my other sorrell mare has 2 white socks, 2 white feet that aren't striped...and my neighbor's grulla QH mare has 2 white socks, 2 white feet that aren't striped...so I thought stripes meant appy and that was that lol. I's still a-learnin'.

Striped feet can also mean silver.

Striped feet do not actually mean anything at all!!!
All my Duns (Black and Red) have had striped feet.
My Palominos have had striped feet.
ALL my Appies have been born without striped feet (did go striped as they spotted up)
I have had Chestnuts with striped feet (and no white legs)
Striped feet are not a sign of [i]anything[/i] :laugh1

I encountered (in person) a chestnut Thoroughbred with thoroughly striped feet a couple of days ago. Very cool.
