Dun or not?

Re: Dun or not?
It doesn't look like the dorsal goes all the way up to the mane... But that is a strong stripe...
Re: Dun or not?
This looks like a false dorsal to me and I guess the horse is buckskin. :flower
Re: Dun or not?
Umm....Hair please..... :love
Re: Dun or not?
I agree with Tjuri.
Re: Dun or not?
May I ask what things say false to you? That's a pretty dark and defined stripe.
Hoofpick that MIGHT be possible. We'll try to find out.
Re: Dun or not?
The edges of the dorsal don't look as crisp as I would expect for a dun.

Re: Dun or not?
How can you tell the difference between the start of dorsal barbs and and "fuzzy false" dorsal?
Re: Dun or not?
Yeah, well, since the concept of barbs is a new thing to me... :rofl Which reminds me, one of these days I must absolutely grab hair and get Ebony dun tested...
But from what I understand, the barbs are evenly placed (yes/no?), and I'm not seeing that with these photos. These edges look smudged, like the 'paint' got under the tape.

Re: Dun or not?
I didn't think duns had to have full dorsals, or there were cases where they did not. I remember there was a talk about it on HGS.
Re: Dun or not?
Very good!! That seems like a major duh thing for me... I hadn't even thought of that.
These two might help (different horse obviously):
Re: Dun or not?
So duns don't have to have full dorsals? The original horse doesn't look like it reaches the mane?
Re: Dun or not?
Nope. Quite a few definite duns start fading midback and disappear before the withers.
Re: Dun or not?
Not one of my fjords has a full dorsal that goes from withers to tail. Some start mid back to tail, some wither to midback, one starts at the withers, stops mid back and starts again before the tail.
Re: Dun or not?
RMT: Do you have pictures of the sire and dam?
Re: Dun or not?
I wouldn't be surprised if it trned out to be Dun, (we've all seen great examples of not fitting a specfic phenotype ), however I'm sticking with non Dun.
ACC-that horse is very clearly Dun to me!
Re: Dun or not?
Oh yes, there is zero doubt he's dun. I was just using him to show barely barbs and some slight smudginess.
Slightly OT, but what base color for that dun I posted?
Re: Dun or not?
Is the op horse really in question-or is this a test? |)
Re: Dun or not?
opps! sorry missed that...Brown

Depends who you ask. :rofl
Re: Dun or not?
I was saying the dorsal of the OP is looking false to me because the horse is red based and the dorsal should be the color of the base color, dark red. It looks nearly black to me and that is mostly a false dorsal then... buckskins often have that dark false dorsal. ;)
Re: Dun or not?
That horse is not red based. :D
Re: Dun or not?
He reminds me of the horse The Man from Snowy River rode... Was danny dun? I think he always rode with a crouper so I don't know!
Re: Dun or not?
Oh and FWIW, this is a red dun:

His dorsal looks nearly black in person as do his wither bars, ear tips and cobwebbing. His leg bars are a little redder, but still very dark.
Re: Dun or not?
Off topic...
Has he got any full siblings? Also dam/sire colours please- I find "black" Chestnut facinating.
Alright ACC! Has the op horse been tested and does he have at least on Dun parent? ;)
Re: Dun or not?
Im at work now but when I get home at around nine I will post everything I know.
Re: Dun or not?
Unfortunately NOTHING is known about the red dun's parents except that he came from a "dun breeding program but he wasn't the color they wanted". I'm guessing they wanted grullo or bay dun? *shrug*
Much easier to see he's red based here:

Yes, RMT know the parents of the OP... she'll share later.
Re: Dun or not?
That's ashame nothing is known about Red Dun's parentage.

So where does the red mane, tail and legs come from - sun fading? :?
Also the last horse you posted, has it been clipped?

Sun fading, an immature horse and carrying a dilution. He actually doesn't look red at all to me. His mane as a foal was pretty black and his color now is fairly typical for a bay/brown (even black) based horse of his age.
This is a smokey black. You can't really see it in this photo but his pasterns are pretty reddish looking.

And no, the red dun has never been clipped.
Re: Dun or not?
I think dun, or at least I would call it that if I saw it at random. That's a very distinct dorsal...
