Who's Breeding for 2011 Foals?

Re: Who's Breeding for 2011 Foals?
How do you get an ultrasound? Is it rectal? An how far does it have to go in? Just the wand, or is there hand/arm involved? LOL. Sorry to get graphic, but my vet won't palpate or ultrasound the ponies because he says they're too small. Granted, he's got large hands, but unless I take them to the hospital, it's a guessing game.
Re: Who's Breeding for 2011 Foals?
Interesting. Even Silo's breeder recommended against rectal as one of their mares was put down after the wand punctured the colon or something like that... I don't like chancing twins.
I'll call my vet next week and see if he's changed his thoughts. Even when Silo coliced, the smaller vet couldn't get her hand in...
Re: Who's Breeding for 2011 Foals?
Rectal yes, she's 13.3h so not that small ;) I did have a 29" mini rectally U/S once, the vet I used had small arms. She tried transabdominal but couldn't see a foal, and we REALLY thought she was pregnant. Luckily she was NOT (she was just a two year old I had bought, breeder said no way she could've been bred but BOY did she have us convinced!) Vet didn't want to due to her small size but we really wanted to know so the vet finally decided to do the rectal so we'd know for sure!

I'm also thinking of breeding this mare to my stallion, but the foal would be a keeper as a replacement for her as she's getting older and my favorite trail mare. I have no idea of her breeding, some people have told me she looks to carry some welsh or arab blood, but I honestly don't know, any guesses?
She is only like 14.2, maybe a tad smaller, but has a massive build, so she is a pony.
Re: Who's Breeding for 2011 Foals?
Her face looks kind of welsh to me, she has the big doe eye and expressive refined head and face, she has a thicker neck and a huge rump. She is a little weaker in the back to me, but the parts where she is weaker, so far my stallion has thrown stronger in his foal's conformation, so I'm hoping for a loud tobiano with her head, but his back and hip.
Re: Who's Breeding for 2011 Foals?
I noticed the neck which is part of what makes me lean toward some sort of Welsh Cob cross. My student's Sec D cross has a cresty neck even when he's on the thin side.
Edited to say the old fashioned Cobs tended to have some pretty strung-out, weak backs so that's further evidence.

I have a Welsh D/Haflinger. Someone asked me if he has been gelded late due to his big neck... they were surprised when I said it's a MARE! LOL :)
