Yes - a horror fiction -- the "Breeders Guide to color enhancement" ---- pick your genes, shake a bit and have a technicolor cocktail for your mare
:laugh1 The crazy thing is, I can actually visualize this... :laugh1
Thats the problem --- me too ----- you see it happen with dogs.

The breeding after fashion styles --- at the moment the poodle is en vogue -- or the chihuahua --- you see them bred in colors fitting the new fashion ........
Thats crazy -- and I hope will never happen with horses ---- but money rules!

I think we as a group are aleady partially 'guilty' of liking the unusual colors and markings. And yes, dog breeds 'evolve'. Dapple dachshunds come to mind, cool to look at, but impossible to get if you had stuck to your A locus expressions that were the originals. Some fence jumping later, we have designer breeds. But if you are really fair, all dogs are designer breeds, selected for criteria that fit a fancy at some point in time. Since you are from Germany, I am sure you understand what I mean if I say that the GSD is no longer a GSD like Von Stephanitz had envisioned. It followed fashion as well as interpretation of the written standard. :o I don't think horses are exempt. At all. See discussion about the 'beefy' QH's on this list. ;)

Or that Dobes no longer conform to that which Herr Dobermann had in mind, although in this one case I will add a heartfelt "Thank Goodness!!"
Where did the Merle in Dachshunds come from, BTW...and the real Dachshund does still exist in the Tekel...most of these breeds have a sort of "backup" breed behind them, all the spaniels do, especially the really crippled ones like the Clumber- there are working Clumbers that are sound animals.
And of course the Cocker- no-one would work a Cocker, so they made the Working Cocker up out of...well, you tell me!!
BUT it is registered.

True.

Isn't teckel just another word for the Dachshund in Europe?
Merle is the M locus. I would suspect any breed with that active, first and foremost aussies and such. All other dachshunds are just (coat) varieties or shades of A. :o BTW: You cannot tell a dachshund owner that his beast is merle. It's 'dapple'iin their book. No discussion possible.

Yes. My gripe about the artificial divided that is called 'breed' too. Not restricted to any particular species, it seems.
Re: Another potential silver
Coloration in the mane/tail can change with age, supplements etc.
My stepmom's silver RMH was getting really bleached looking, and she started using Dark as Knight. His mane and tail went dark as well as his body.
Her other black silver used to have WHITE mane and tail and as he's aged it has gotten darker and darker.
This is Turbo, I've seen pictures as he's aged and he's gotten darker and darker. He used to be dark almost black body and white mane/tail and now he's just blonde on the ends. He's really bleached in the body here.

Oh I agree. Despite how fast things are going.
