You mean that herd of purple horses in the background? I agree! How unusual!
Re: Metallic Sheen..what causes it?
we had a dark red chestnut with mane/tail same color as his body at the boy scout camp I worked with who had a super metallic sheen to him as well...but darn if I don't have any close pics of him that show the shimmer--been looking the past few days on my camp photo discs. Event totally filthy and halfway neglected when he came to us at the start of one summer he still sparkled. Only pics I have of him are from such a distance and in the shade...bummer. I think the sparkle was the only thing going for him too....he was a late gelded boy with an attitude and a trot like a jackhammer....but he was a character...he was also missing half an ear thanks to another camp horse(a mare) putting him in his place.
Re: Metallic Sheen..what causes it?
I found a shiny that Gander took of Blair.

Re: Metallic Sheen..what causes it?
Some of it is health i think, mary was plain ol black when i first got her but with some regular grooming, supplements and decent exercise she got a real shine on her, even mable who was at a very strange stage of greying shone more but that glittery copper seems to go with a 'thin skinned' chestnut when i've seen it and the glass like shimmer seems to be something else, that grey looks fantastic.
Re: Metallic Sheen..what causes it?
Speaking of shiny, there is a vet student on my rotation right now that is from Austria and she asked me about Kinsky horses when I mentioned the shininess of champagnes while discussing colors. As I had never heard of them, she sent me links to some photos. What do you all think? They are from the Czech Republic so could have similar breeding to Akhal Tekes.

Re: Metallic Sheen..what causes it?
yup..you can see on her back some counter shading at times...this year it's darker than it has been in the past.
as a side note...that spot of white hairs...that from her sabino?

Re: Metallic Sheen..what causes it?
that's the only clump i've seen on her...and it's been there, although not this big before, since the year after I got her. That being said, she was in poor shape when I got her (could actually see the shadows of her ribs and she was quite wormy) and it took about a year for her to really bounce back
Re: Metallic Sheen..what causes it?
Lace has a few random sabino spots. They've not always been there, just showed up this year. But I'm certain they're not Birdcatchers. Of course she has so much roaning I'm not surprised. (She has so much roaning in fact that I have been trying to find reason to believe she's rabicano.)
Re: Metallic Sheen..what causes it?

Yes, clumped white hairs happen on my sabino (flaxen) chestnut too.
The seem to move from year to year (slightly) too, or at times disappear. Do you have the same?
Bird catchers
Mine had a clear birdcatcher a year ago. And it did not come back this year. Washed off? The clumped sabino though is a larger mark than the average bird catcher, not as evenly shaped and more roaned than the rest of the horse, but not a solid white spot. :?
Re: Metallic Sheen..what causes it?
That doesn't sound like a Birdcatcher to me.
:rofl That is what I was saying. She did have a birdcatcher, but it did not come back after a shed. Birdcatcher below. The dark in the picture below is shadow

The current whatever is clearly not a birdcatcher. I am holding out hope for my SPB to become a full paint. :laugh1
I cannot find a pic right now, but will look again tomorrow.
Re: Metallic Sheen..what causes it?
I recall seeing a grey *pearl* I htink one time and it was the most bizarre color I think I ever saw and unfortunately I didnt scarf up the pic and save it.
