Yes, she came to see Lacy too!!! *grin*

How embarassing! Sorry Gander... I have a hard time keeping up with who's who... I love you pictures and as you website notes: They are pictures you can feel!
Great job!
If you plan a trip again and make it to California let me know... I have the cutest blue eyed pony... With the exception of his brother Cory!

Andrea Tue, 06/30/2009 - 15:34

Hmmm. How do we know what a homozygous splash phenotype looks like?
Does anyone have an example of stallions/mares that have only thrown splash? Just curious cause thinking of Vimpenny, he throws splash a lot and maybe on the ones that don't look splash still have it minimally like he does.

RiddleMeThis Tue, 06/30/2009 - 16:18
But since there's not a test out for splash yet... How do we know what a homozygote looks like?
Are there minimal tobianos that are homozygous?
Yes there are minimal tobianos who are homozygous but splash is thought to work differently than tobiano does.

Tobiano gives you the same type of expression whether homozygous or heterozygous. Splash is thought to give you different phenotypes depending on whether the horse is homozygous or heterozygous like cream does.

Heterozygous splash is minimal, and homozygous splash is maximal.

Andrea Tue, 06/30/2009 - 16:53

Looking at Ronnies ponies (Promise Ranch) he's got some wild marked splash, yet they aren't homozygous I don't think. But then again, splash can hide as evidenced by Sultan. So without a test, I don't understand how you could say that homozygous splash looks a certain way.

Morgan Tue, 06/30/2009 - 17:02

The problem with saying splash is not homozygous based on number of pinto offspring is due to it's nature. If you are breeding a homozygous splash stallion, 100% of the foals by a non splash mare will be minimal, often to the extent of nothing more than a blaze or a snip. 50% of foals by minimal mares will be homozyous(and more highly marked). So it doesn't work in the popular idea that homozygous means they'll allways make the pattern they have. It more similar to homozygous in the way that a cremello is homozygous for cream.

Andrea Tue, 06/30/2009 - 17:57

But there's a big difference with creme and splash... If it's creme, it shows itself, with the exception of black.
Splash can be there and be hidden.

I'm not trying to be argumentative... I'm really just trying to understand.. Especially since my boy is splash and so is Ditz... He's not homozygous, but he's pretty loud. So how loud is loud enough to be homozygous? I guess I never thought the amount of white would show the homozygousity of the animal.

accphotography Tue, 06/30/2009 - 18:05

The amount of lightness in a cream shows the homozygosity. Splash DOES show itself in it's heterozygous form. White patterns just don't follow many rules as to the level of their expression. For instance, this mare is PROVEN splash (if the incomplete dominant theory is correct anyhow):

As is this mare:

Sara Tue, 06/30/2009 - 19:05

My bet is that Vimpenny Sweet Sultan is heterozygous.

I have a sneaking suspicion that Cory is homozygous. He has really loud full siblings so I know it's possible... but really it's just a hunch. Does Frodo have any super loud siblings? I can't recall right now.

accphotography Tue, 06/30/2009 - 19:42

Cory and Frodo are generally more minimal than I would assume was homozygous, but the tail and the wither white on Frodo does make me wonder about him. I'm not sure about Cory.

I feel sure I can say when one is homozygous, I just have no confidence to say when one dances on that border.

And The Promise is about a half hour from me. (make that an hour and half for you) They are not on this board, but take a sneak peak and you'll see why Gander should really stop by there. *nudge, nudge, wink, wink*
Thanks Judith & Morgan!!

The Promise has some nice, BEAUTIFUL stock!!!
I also just found out today that there will be a show in Marshall at the city arena for Welsh ponies!!
Dunno anything else...I may try & go & get some pics!!
Do The Promise show theirs? Maybe they'll be there. Not sure on the days but I do know Saturday July 11th.

Ok just checked, its the 10th, 11th & 12th. http://marshallcityarena.com/events/ind…" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Oh, and if you did make it to The Promise... I am sure you would get some awesome shots as his ponies tend to be a bit unhandled... you know what I mean? :)
Andrea, that made me chuckle! :) Yesssss, I think I know just what you mean.... ;)

I've wanted to visit The Promise for many months and have had the grulla lady on my possible hit list, too. Sigh. I wish I had time to go everywhere, as it's so much fun! I had a few TX farms 'on the line' this winter, but the people weren't keen on my visiting then as their horses had winter coats. Even southern FL farms wouldn't let me visit in the winter for that reason...sigh....

With the Triple Crown, Saratoga, autumn racing at Belmont and the Breeders' Cup - and then horses' winter coats - it sure cut down on days I could visit farms!

If by some wild chance I can get down to TX in the next few weeks, it would be great fun to meet some of the faces behind the names here...as well as meet/photograph your horses...

Those splash examples are pretty amazing, accphotography. So much to learn!! :)

No, he doesn't show. But the owner of Scarsborough has a dun baby from one of his mares that is very nice. They live close to each other. As far as I've heard, Ronnie loves visitors and loves talking ponies. It'd be interesting to see what you thought of his place. I've heard differing sentiments and I have an opinion as I have one of his ponies.
You should call and take a visit. Maybe you'll see something you like??? :rofl

Maybe you can PM as to what you mean?
I do see a lot that I like, but I'm no judge of ponies. See I like BIG, ROUND butts :booty ...like my QHs & I guess the ponies aren't meant to be like that!!! :laugh1
I think they're cute & boy do his have a lot of "pretty" about them & lots of different colors. Boy & he does have a lot to choose from. Oooo it would be nice to visit & take pics!!! I'm always up for "horsey" talk!!! lol

True, but there was a thread before you joined about them and the consensus seemed to be that while they were more minimal than most homozygous horses, they were also more highly marked than most heterozygous ones. This could be sabino giving them a boost, or :?: :?: :?: So far Cory has two obvious splash offspring and one that I think is splash because of the crooked blaze. You know I'll keep you posted about what else he sires because I know three foals doesn't mean anything. :) My guess was that he was homozygous before he had any foals on the ground though, so, it's just my hunch.

Sara Wed, 07/01/2009 - 00:21

Well, I didn't mean to imply that I thought you were implying I was wrong. I was pretty much saying I'm clueless as well, but with a hunch. Heck, I've got a 50/50 shot at being right!

Okay, so you were implying that she was implying that you were implying that he was implying that she was implying that they were implying that the original was implying that....oh wait...I've lost track on the number of implies here... :booty :laugh1 :laugh1 :laugh1
