ugh, don't let me look at Craigslist

This mare is free and only a couple hours away. The ad says she has a sore back and may not be able to be ridden. She's only four. What do you think from the way she is standing? Can I fix it? She needs love and groceries, that's for sure.

Well I don't know about in your case, but in Lace's case I think it was part of the game. I think she wanted us to be worried about losing her... sorta seal the deal.

I hope the meat man hasn't already stopped by there. A rescue though also could've already gotten her. Either way, advertising a "free" horse is just SO bad. When times were better rescues would scan the web for this just to ensure that they got them before the meat men. She is thin though, so maybe she wouldn't be worth the trip.

The ad is gone so they must have found someone else. Yeah, I just hope it wasn't that grandma-looking lady who was picking up free horses "for 4-H" and taking them to the auction.

Sara, we had one of those "grandmas" here who'd advertise on "freecycle" that she was looking for horses & ponies (of any age) for underprivilaged children in 4-H; all the while promising them a "good forever home". She'd then take the horses across the line and sell them to the highest bidder (she didn't care who it was or if they were kill buyers).

She only got caught because one of the donatees was at that same auction looking for a new mini stud prospect (he'd heard a son of one he liked would be there) and saw his "donated 2yr old AQHA filly" in the arena being auction off for next to nothing (it was only like 3 weeks after his donation). He called the cops and the woman was arrested for obtaining property by false pretense. The sale barn was very cooperative and all the horses she'd brought to the sale were returned to their former owners (a lot of them were registered) - if they chose to not let the sales stand that is (some really were good homes - if they let them stand the former owners got the money, not "grandma"). I think they got her on something like 15 counts of false pretense and she got like 5 yrs in jail (she pled "no contest" - Alford Plea to we legal folks as it could have been 15 yrs).

Do you read FHOTD? If you do, you may remember the woman who took the soldier's free horses (he was off to Iraq and needed good homes for them) and promptly brought them to an auction. That woman is in my area. A lot of what FHOTD writes about is in my area since she lives not far from me.

Moral of story, never give a horse away? :? (but even cheap, they'd be a risk of sale barn)

Bummer, I got to the end of the thread and was hoping you had been given the poor Mare. I'm crossing my fingers you still get contacted Sara though it doesn't seem likely :(. Hopefully another decent person picked the mare up :sad
