Silver Bay or Chestnut?

Everyone assumed this filly was chestnut and white when she was born last year, but this year her summer coat has her owners wondering. The dam is an unregistered haflinger, sire a black and white gypsy cob. The legs and ears tips aren't black but seem to have some dark contrast and pangare could lighten too?? She's testing her, so I'll let you know results when they come through.

I do not think that !spotted" Fjord is Appy as we know it, I think it is exactly like the "spotted" ponies pictured in the cave paintings. I wonder if it had any offspring??
The Shetland Pony is the foundation breed of all Miniature Horses everywhere in the world, even the Americas!! So if the Minis are weird we know where it came from.........
Fells were always believed to been descended from Friesans, in my day, there was a great deal of trade between the Friesan homeland and the home county of the Fells, it stands to reason that there was trade in horses as well as other goods, they were also quite a bit smaller than they are now, as were the Friesans.
In my childhood, the mare I had was 13.00hh, which was par for the course for a riding Fell, and the Friesans stood around 15.2hh max.

I've seen some roan QHs around here that looked like that. Owner of one said she was told it was reverse dapples on the roan...dunno what it was but it sure was pretty in person. Oddly enough, all 3 that i've seen in person were the same base color as that mare you posted RMT

Brown? I think all of the ones I've seen have been either brown or black. No bay or chestnut.

That is reverse dapples in the roan, yup. I just wish I knew why some have them and some don't. I think it's one of the most awesome looking things I've ever seen.

Well, since the photo was dealing with pre- DD days Fjords it is more than possible that that horse was also a "reverse" dapple Roan..... I have had Roans for years and I have never seen one like that before!

TheRedHayflinger Wed, 06/30/2010 - 05:57

I don't think I've ever seen a black roan with the reverse dapples, just brown. One MIGHT Have been bay, but pretty sure all have been brown.

Hah... it makes me wonder if Lace's agoutis are brown since she has reverse dapples for no other apparent reason. Come to think of it, I've seen a few non dilute TBs with reverse dapples... all were brown. Hmmmm.

I wonder if I bred Lace to a roan if she'd pass her reverse dapples. :D

That reminds me of John Henery. I have photos of him some where because I had a good friend of mine who loved that old horse, so every time I went to Kentucky I took photos of him for her. But his developed when he was older, and his hair was shaggy. The best ones I had of him were the year before he passed.

you mean you haven't tested Lace for brown? :D
know of any smexy roan boyfriends for her in the future? LOL

accphotography Thu, 07/01/2010 - 16:17

I have not actually. That's the ONLY thing on the planet she hasn't been tested for. It's merely because I just haven't gotten around to it yet. I fully plan to.

I'd LOVE a VS Code Red foal. I also wouldn't mind a My Final Notice (sadly his roan is tied to his 'e' though). If I could find a really quality 'EE' roan I might be tempted to try it. Especially if she carries/is brown.
