Question about my black filly **Updated with results**

My filly is getting real close to shedding out all of her icky faded baby coat, and is starting to be nice and black again. But the hair around her eye and muzzle is still brown. Is it just faded or will she always have the reddish hair there? She's 3 months old, btw. [img]http://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa65/bornnraisedhawkeye/Jette/DSC036…]

Well her muzzle was a tad brown at birth wasn't it? I've seen browns this dark. She definitely could be black, but knowing both parents had at least one copy of agouti means she had less than a 25% chance of being black.

Only looking at her I would say brown or smoky --- I never saw a black one with a brown nose -- the rest could be fading, but the nose .... my little smoky black is colored almost exactly -- except her nose is dark grey/black.

I don't know what to say about the colour...Ebony's gone thru' some of that, which makes me wonder, but as her parents are both Ee aa, she can only be black or chestnut based.

So are you saying you're not sure that she's black, or not sure about whether her face will ever be black?
All of the above? :rofl Seriously, I've gone thru' all sorts of conjecture on Ms Ebony...grulla, black, extremely funked out chestnut...smokey black is not something I've considered as she's only got one half-sibling who I think might be a funky buckskin, but I've suspected the dam (and will probably find out, as we now have the dam). But, who knows with our stallion? He's definitely not the colour he was registered as being, and his baby picture shows him to be "chocolate". When he was colour tested, it was only for extension and agouti.
Yeah she does look pretty black there. We can hope!
Yes, she's gotta be black. Since I registered her as black.

I think I'll hold off on testing her until next year, just to see what she looks like after shedding out her winter coat in the spring. If I'm still not sure, I'll have her tested.

Going by how dark she was at birth I don't see how she could be anything but black. I've seen tested blacks fade much worse then she has.

Nah, the parents both having Agouti does not mean she can't just as easily be Black.
It doesn't work that way....come on, now, you knowit doesn't work that way!!! :rofl

Well technically... Technically it DOES mean "she can't just as easily be black". She has a 25% chance of being black or maybe even less. If one of her parent's were black that number would be notably higher.

Just a little update. I told my grandma about not knowing quite what color Jette is, and she said that she wanted to know so she'd pay for it for me (yes, I have an awesome Grandma!). So I should be able to tell you for sure what color she is pretty soon!

I'm going to test her for black rather than brown, since it's cheaper--that should work, right?

Goonhorse Tue, 10/27/2009 - 17:15

I got to thinking about this more, and I can't figure this out, so please humor me. :D What would be the difference between testing her for agouti or extension? If I test her for extension and it comes back saying she's black, then that should answer my question. And if I test her for agouti, and it comes back saying that she carries it, then I'll know that she's brown (because there's no way she's bay).

So basically I'm confuzzled. Anybody want to try explaining it to this poor color-clueless person?

lipigirl Tue, 10/27/2009 - 17:27

We know she is already blacked based or she would be chestnut - now all you need to know is if she carries Agouti too which would maker her bay or in her case brown - does that help you ?

Fledgesflight Tue, 10/27/2009 - 18:04

Testing for Extension (E or e) would not tell you if she were Bay/Brown/Seal...
Testing for Agouti will tell you if she's Black (aa) or Bay/Brown/Seal (AA or Aa) ect ect..

We know that she is E_ which is blackbased...
What do you mean "in the beginning"????? :rofl :booty :rofl
I think she means "in the beginning of time", before anything was known about genetics, which doesn't make me feel any better. :rofl

Of course, testing for extension will let you know if she's hetero- or homozygous for black...which could be handy if you've plans for breeding and have a colour preference.

YAY!!! I guess what we saw in some cases was just sun fading then. She really did look black in those very young photos. I'm glad you went ahead and had her tested! Sorry about her being hetero black, but at least she's BLACK. :bounce

I'm glad I had her tested, too. I was pretty confident she was black, but I knew it would bug me until I had her tested. :D

Yeah, it's okay about the hetero. I don't know if I'll ever have her bred or not, but if I do, color will be the least of my worries. ;)
