Ok, not MY foal. lol

I was reading this thread on LiveJournal and was curious about the baby. http://community.livejournal.com/horse_photos/1041659.html?view=9709819…" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; Am I just not seeing it? If it is locked, it is talking about the girl's 5 day old buckskin half Arabian Riding pony. Here are some links to the photos if they don't work in the above posted one.. http://i592.photobucket.com/albums/tt3/tallyandi/IMG_0050.jpg" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; http://i592.photobucket.com/albums/tt3/tallyandi/IMG_9909.jpg" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; http://i592.photobucket.com/albums/tt3/tallyandi/IMG_9919.jpg" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; http://i592.photobucket.com/albums/tt3/tallyandi/IMG_9917.jpg" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; http://i592.photobucket.com/albums/tt3/tallyandi/IMG_0009.jpg" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; http://i592.photobucket.com/albums/tt3/tallyandi/IMG_0025.jpg" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; http://i592.photobucket.com/albums/tt3/tallyandi/IMG_0032.jpg" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; http://i592.photobucket.com/albums/tt3/tallyandi/IMG_0043.jpg" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; Think I can faintly see some leg barring? http://i592.photobucket.com/albums/tt3/tallyandi/IMG_0044.jpg" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; So, I automatically thought, "Bay dun" but she said there are no dun parents and dad is cremello... so I guess he'd have to be buckskin... I'm hoping she'll provide info about the sire. He looks light in some but darker in others... Either way, he IS adorable. ;) Have you seen other creams that just don't look very creamy? Aside from the appy smokey blacks of course. ;) lol Hope everyone had a great holiday too, btw!

I agree the foal looks more bay than buck, but I suppose it *could* happen. I know I've seen palomino foals that looked RED and did NOT look pally. As for the dun markings, they look like countershading, to me; the markings just aren't very deep, dark and defined ... which suggests counter-shading and which is also *very* common in non-dun foals. In addition, I think the leg stripes you are seeing are probably 'watermarks' from the hair curling/waving from the amniotic fluid.

lipigirl Sun, 12/27/2009 - 12:13

I agree with Heidi but the Sire could still be a dun carrier as it's hard to often see on the DDs

Haha, yea, I breed friesians and andys and know of watermarks. xD I'm referring to the front right knee in that last picture. Could just be off shading though.

Heather Sun, 12/27/2009 - 13:33

OT.. i just realized a few days ago my dads neighbor has a barn FULL of fresians.. i am sooo observant lol  " what is up with all the black horses ?" lol

accphotography Sun, 12/27/2009 - 20:19

I don't think dun. But then again, I really didn't think cream either until I read about the sire. This was why I recommended getting little Ditto tested, because some foals just don't show the cream that well. I sure would like to know for certain the sire really is a DD though.

I had to go back and look, I *really* had to look hard, but I think I see what you mean, though they look like very faint gray shadows ... I would still have to say countershading: if it *were* dun, the markings would be unmistakable.

Hmm..I just read about the sire being Cremello. I don't know now, except that it still looks exceptionally Bay!

RiddleMeThis Mon, 12/28/2009 - 00:11

Do you have a picture of the sire?

I'm very curious if he is TRULY cremello, or just being CALLED cremello like Guns and White Roses was.

TheSwingHorse Mon, 12/28/2009 - 00:24

I'm waiting for a reply... hopefully soon! haha

[edit]: She replied. Here is the sire: http://remaanilodge.webs.com/stallionsa…" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Here is another post by her:

Again, if link doesn't work:

She mentioned the "buckskin duo" so I'm not sure if the horse in the other pasture is the one she is referring to or not. The large gelding is supposedly a friesian warmblood.

That is one adorable foal! Just wow! And naughty! :D
A-Freaking-adorable!
It is much darker then Ditz, but I'd say it's shed out a dark buckskin... Or would it be brown=creme?

Do we have a term for brown=creme? :D

Fledgesflight Sat, 01/02/2010 - 19:02

LOL! Back to looking Bay!

In all seriousness though, I think it'll probably end up a nice medium shade of Buckskin...

Rusti Sun, 01/03/2010 - 13:30

I also thought smokey black as soon as I saw that foal. Everyone claims my colt will be smokey black and he's gone through the exact same colors so far.

dakotakdq Sun, 01/03/2010 - 15:04

foal looks bucky to me with those lighter coloured legs, smokey blacks should be more black/smokey grey coloured at birth usually.
Foal may be a smokey brown? do they have the bay base look to them like this foal?

accphotography Sun, 01/03/2010 - 18:48

The Abby foal posted above DOES look cream to me. The OP doesn't.

No, from what I've seen and heard many smokey brown foals don't look cream as a foal... and sometimes don't even look cream as an adult. That probably makes the most sense.

I don't see smokey black at all.

Fledgesflight Mon, 01/04/2010 - 05:51

I agree^ That one looks Cream whereas the op doesn't really.

Missmagnus had a Smokey Brown (filly) foal- From memory it was a buff colour at birth, but later shed to the norm of Brown colouring.

rabbitsfizz Mon, 01/04/2010 - 09:46

The Abbi foal is a ringer for my section B Buckskin, although a lot darker in colour, it is the same "type"!!
The bay foal looks like a bay foal, the one on this page, I mean.
I have seen quite a few visual Smoky Blacks now and none looked like a bay, at any stage, although I have to admit I have not seen that many from foal right through to adult, to see what "stages" they went through, could be black, of course, but I doubt Smoky Black......

Rusti Mon, 01/04/2010 - 14:49

Rusti Mon, 01/04/2010 - 19:03

I don't think he ever looked bay either, but I did have a few people tell me they thought he'd be bay.

Heidi Mon, 01/04/2010 - 21:55

From foal to 6mo ... he looked *just* like my black colt from a Grulla/Palomino cross. I never had him color tested (1988) but while he could have carried cream and had no agouti ... he def missed out on dun. *pout*
I had thought for sure I'd get something interesting (color-wise) out of a black dun and pally cross, but I didn't.
