Not mine, but what color?

Threnody Fri, 11/12/2010 - 18:04

Looks like it to me too.
What little can be seen of the tail also looks lightened by gray.

rabbitsfizz Sat, 11/13/2010 - 09:35

Actually it could just be Buckskin in winter coat. My Buckskin mare went a similar, false roaning, in winter.

accphotography Sat, 11/13/2010 - 20:01

I think the horse may be a classic roan and the roan spilled over. It's not common on adults, but it can happen. The roaning over the neck looks very classic roan to me.

Danni Sun, 11/14/2010 - 00:57

Hmm.. I reckon what RF said, I've seen buckys too get some weird false roaning look in the winter coat

Bannerminis Sun, 11/14/2010 - 03:18

I wonder what age he is? Rosie looks like that now and she is nearly 20. She has some grey on her neck but the most of it is on her forhead so she is now in need of a blue rinse lol

rabbitsfizz Sun, 11/14/2010 - 07:51

I agree that age could do it.
But.
The Buckskin thing can do it also, it is "frosting" very similar to that which happens in their manes and tails. With classic Roan you do not get the head involved, that stays solid, unless there is something else at work, and I do not see Sabino.

accphotography Sun, 11/14/2010 - 22:29

I've seen a fair number of classic roans with roaning on the head. Some even without apparent sabino. Sadly horse colors don't always follow the book 100%

rabbitsfizz Mon, 11/15/2010 - 09:00

We shall have to differ on this one as I have never seen classic Roan causing roaning on the head, not without something else being present, that is.
Not once.

Tested roan without gray:

No possibility of gray:

From grullablue.com stated as an example of all over classic roan:

No gray unless pure Brabants have developed it:

Dam is significantly roaned beyond the normal points:

I've seen it several times in person lately too. It just does seem to happen sometimes.

Danni Mon, 11/15/2010 - 19:30

Yeh I've seen it a few times when the horse is excessively roan, but you usually see a darker face, even if there is roan on it. Your first link I've seen a bit on the really roan horses. But it still looks true roan. The Belgians too, when they have roan on their face, they still have that darker point true roan look? If that makes sense!

Third Peppermint Mon, 11/15/2010 - 20:33

Thank you for those picture links ACC! They're very helpful for me!

Does anyone have any examples of the roaning that OLD horses get?

accphotography Mon, 11/15/2010 - 20:55

There is LOVELY photo of Raja Baba somewhere that shows it very well. I think it's Barbara Livingston's. From memory, it doesn't look like the roaning on the OP horse's head.

rabbitsfizz Tue, 11/16/2010 - 08:40

Rabbit has gone roan with old age, all over his face, I'll try and get some pictures...

ACC you may well know there is no Grey, but do you know there is no Sabino?

accphotography Tue, 11/16/2010 - 21:14

On the Brabants... yeah. On the others, who knows. I don't see much chance of sabino expresses only by a star causing that much roaning.

rabbitsfizz Wed, 11/17/2010 - 09:39

I still say that to have roaning on the head the animal has to have something other than Roan going on, Roan does not cause roaning on the head, as far as I am concerned and aware.

accphotography Wed, 11/17/2010 - 13:33

No offense intended (honestly), but I think it's naive' to say "NEVER" about anything color related.

rabbitsfizz Thu, 11/18/2010 - 08:11

Oh, I agree, that is why I say I have never seen it, rather than it never happens. I have not said it never happens, although, as far as I am aware, it does not. None of that is cast in stone.

Finally!
I HATE (Loathe abhor) all the stupid, POINTLESS changes they have made to Photobucket, meaning I can only now upload one picture at a time while they flash ads at me. ARGH!!!!

Anyway Rabbit had a solid sorrel head as a youngster, this has come in slowly over the past ten years. He is now 31.

Are you sure you can only upload one at a time? I can still upload multiple photos at a time...

RiddleMeThis Sat, 11/20/2010 - 00:44

Its definitely very different than it was for me too, but I can still ctr click for multiple photo uploads from my computer, and I still have an "add more" button to add more from the web.

rabbitsfizz Sat, 11/20/2010 - 01:48

Tell me how??
I am the first to admit I am not very good at this sort of thing. I just could not see anywhere to click on "multiples" as there was previously.

Songcatcher Sat, 11/20/2010 - 07:42

I'm sure glad I'm not the only one that hates the constant changes to Photobucket.

rabbitsfizz Sat, 11/20/2010 - 09:58

Wayhay, bounces off, hijacking thread as she goes, to attack photobucket when they least expect it.. ymwhisle :-t

CheyAut Sun, 11/21/2010 - 15:23

(I also hate what PB has changed to recently, but I CAN upload multiple pics at once by holding down control).

Like RF, buckskin was what came to mind to me with the face roaning.

And here's some roaning on the face due to age... This is Concho, he is around 24 y/o, we had leased him as hubby's driving horse until this past spring. IIRC he had a small star when he was young?
