Long time now talkie! Need my appy people!

Hey guys first of all, I have missed you all so much. I have been dealing with more ill health issues that have been pretty serious again so my time online has been VERY limited. I check email about once a week now but there are days when I actually get to do it more often. I hope you have all been doing well and look forward to hearing from you so much. Now, I am so happy that I have finally adopted a Walkaloosa from a rescue organization and I love her! She is a tank of a mare at only 14.3 and looks like she could eat Honey for lunch! lol. She is not the best in structure and that is okay with me. She is my new trail horse deluxe! She has an amazing gait and an amazing disposition. Not to mention that getting her saved 4 more horses from an auction! That makes my heart feel good. My question is about her pattern. I am just assuming that she is a black and white leopard but I remember that Spring had tiny white dots all over and she was considered a snowflake. I was wondering if there is such a thing as a "dark on white snowflake" or if when dark on white it is "leopard". I never plan on breeding her but want to know for my own information. I am going to try to attach a few pics for you to see her. She is SO dirty due to snow, rain and constant mud in the pastures. Any info you can give is great! Thanks! Great to see you back. Gosh, she looks like a nice mare to me. Pattern is tough on this one, I'm assuming she can't be a fewspot because she's a halfbred, but that's sure what she looks like to me. Could she be grey? By the way, how is that Arab gelding? And did Honey ever get bred?

steffiegilbert Tue, 01/19/2010 - 15:36

Thanks! I just posted pics of Banner (the arab) and Gypsy (the TWH) on one of the other threads. Honey did conceive but lost the foal after 65 days. I just gave up. It is just too much anymore.

I am not sure about the grey. She has very defined black patterns but then again she has some very small black spots as well. She is covered in them but they are hard to see with the winter fuzzies!

She is a solid mare. You can't tell by the pics but she is huge (solid). I love her. We adopted her as my Christmas present. LOVE LOVE her!

Check out the pics of Banner and Gypsy and let me know what you think about them now!

Hugs!

She's lovely Steffie !! I really like her - very nicely put togther and pretty head for an appy - sorry guys !!!

If I hadn't known I would have put her as a Max Sabino - can see what you asked but Leopard is my guess as Appies are not my strongpoint !

steffiegilbert Tue, 01/19/2010 - 16:29

I can't wait until she sheds this Spring... It will be very interesting for sure. Hmmmmmm.....

I am happy to say that the adoption fee that I we paid for her and saved the minis.... They have all found new homes already and are leaving tonight. She is the gift that keeps on giving. She is a DREAM to ride. Awesome gaits.. Love it.

You deserve it honey !!! ;)

Her spots seem to be diffused. The only thing that I have seen do that to LP spots are classic (not on the face as much) & grey. She looks to carry grey, to me. Do you have any photos of her feet? The snow is such a great scrub brush.

Oh, welcome back stranger, so glad you checked in!!
This is a really nice mare, how fantastic that you found one another, it really is "Kismet"!!
I like this mare lots, she has a "European" look to her, not what you would expect form that cross at all and she looks as if you should be looking for a cart for her, too, she is made for harness, believe me!
She is not a Few Spot, I think she may be a fader, if you had seen her when she was younger I am almost sure that the spots would have been more defined, and I think you will find they will fade slowly now, until they disappear. This most normally caused by Grey.
The other possibility is that she is a seasonal apply, and that her spots will get more defined in summer and fade again in winter....no way of knowing that until spring...roll on spring!! :bounce
So glad to hear about the Minis, too, we that breed them know just how vulnerable they are, you see these videos from hell on YouTube and you curl up and die...if I could reach into the video and thump the owners I ....well, I'd be in jail, wouldn't I??
Steffie, I hope you can stick around, things are getting really weird around here, I can tell you. I'm agreeing with ACC all the time and the other day I even agreed with Riddle Me This...I tell you, we need all the help we can get :rofl :booty :-bd

welcome back! :D
You know, if you hadn't said Appy, I would be thinking sabino too.
Why not Sabino+Appy? She said Walkaloosa and walkers have some crazy roaned Sabino colors.

rabbitsfizz Fri, 01/22/2010 - 09:58

Yes....OK, OK, now I am agreeing with everyone, let me just go and check my temperature...OK, it's a little elevated but nothing drastic, now, where were we?? :rofl
Oh Yes, Sabino....that heavy Sabino mare ...whose is it??is it Steff's?? Anywho that is TWH isn't it?? So heavy Sabino on Appy...that would do it!!
I like her!
I'm thinking Few Spot too.
Can't be, if she's a walkaloosa. My money's on there being a grey parent. Unfortunately, grey isn't 'outlawed' in the ApHC, so there are plenty of grey genes floating around.

Ahh okay- need to get updated on breeds that have the Appy pattern lol.

Sabino/Grey then?
Is she Appy?- looks like Appy mottling.

Stef, have you seen her coat wet? What colour is her skin? Oh wait~ are those greyed out spots? so she could be a greyed out Leopard?

NZ Appaloosas Tue, 02/02/2010 - 22:16

Ignoring minis, in the US the 'pure' breeds that carry Lp will be Appaloosas and Knabstruppers. 'Tigre' (or Tiger, I can never remember), walkaloosas, etc., are all some other breed mixed with Appaloosas (mostly). While one could conceivably achieve a fewspot/snowcap by breeding two walkaloosas together, I've not really heard much of HZ's being found in walkaloosa/tigre/tigre horses.

Cute mare! She looks LP + grey to me.

I was looking at Tiger Horse stallion after my snowcap stallion died. He was a fewspot (what they call a Ghost Horse) and was supposedly a naturally gaited Appaloosa. However, he didn't have ApHC papers (just Tiger Horse) so he wouldn't fit in my breeding program. The gal that owned him seemed rather offended that I didn't want to buy him.

I'm pretty sure that naturally gaited Appaloosas (Indian Shufflers) are eligible for registration as Walkaloosas and/or Tiger Horses.

My fewspot stallion will occasionally do a lateral gait.
POAs also carry Lp and wasn't there one known Lp Walker (supposedly a fence jumping grandparent??)
I always forget the POAs...as they're ponies Some mustangs do, but there again, I've not seen many, and well, IMO, mustangs don't necessarily count as a breed since there's usually no record of breeding, except in very closed, very managed herds on reserves/sanctuaries (from what I gather, I admit I really don't know much of mustangs other than what tends to hit the news about BLM actions regarding them).

The Walker you're talking about is, I believe, Admiral, and yes there's some question regarding the lineage there, according to some (and not, according to others, from memory). As he seems to be an exception, I wouldn't count Walkers as having Lp.

Diane, check out this page http://www.arrowrockspanishmustangs.com…] Mustangs are a breed(s) (Spanish Mustangs, Sorraias, Sulphers, Kigers, etc.), there is recorded breeding/papers for several strains, and there's lots of them around with LP.
