Naughty mare! How'd she manage that?

Re: ugh! Deja vu!!!

I couldn't find anything that looked like an obvious culprit but it's in the exact same place as Isabelle's so I figure the stall latch is the most likely thing. When Isabelle did hers, there was blood and skin and hair on the latch so it was pretty obvious. The thing is that there are springs in these latches that make them stay flush with the barn wall when the door is open so both mares must have had to run into the wall in a very particular way in order to pull the latch out and get snagged on it.

I'm on the same routine of gentamicin and penicillin injections. Good thing my warmblood mares are troopers about needles.

Why is it that horses are so good at finding just that *way* of doing things so they get hurt?

Re: ugh! Deja vu!!!

The good news this morning is that Rosalynn does not have the swelling that Isabelle got with hers. This could be because this time I had banamine on hand to give her right away -- or just because Isabelle is always a bigger baby about things than Rosalynn!

Oh, here's a warning to everyone here. I screwed up before the vet came and poked around in it to see how deep it was. My vet says that's how people kill horses... horses deal with their own bacteria pretty well (bacteria from their own coats and stalls, I assume) but are unfamiliar with the bacteria from our hands so that's how bad infections can start. Especially if this wound had gone all the way through the muscle into her abdominal cavity I could have introduced a very bad thing.

Oh, and I got a new colorful analogy from the vet this time. Remember last time I said that she complained that suturing muscle is like sewing cheese? This time it was like sewing spaghetti!

My vet also told me that someone complained about her morbid stories recently. I happen to love them. This time while she was sewing she told me about a very metrosexual friend of hers who managed to sever three of his own fingers in his automatic garage door opener. He popped the fingers into his own mouth and drove himself to the ER -- as opposed to fainting and dying of blood loss which was what she would have expected from this friend. :laugh1

Oooh! I'm intrigued.... It sounds like morbid vet stories can be just as good as morbid police/sheriff stories.

They really can, although I don't remember specifics of any right now. I love this vet. She's young and comes in wearing funky glasses and head to toe outdoor gear from REI and chatters away about weird cases she's had.

Wanna know what's really weird? If your vet's friend had a personal injury case, and that sort of thing came across my desk (medical notes, photographs, etc.), I'd be fine. However, reading it here is making me wish I didn't have noodles for lunch... :ymsick: :ymsick: :ymsick:

Re: ugh! Deja vu!!!

Apparently Rosalynn doesn't hold her antibiotics as well as Isabelle. The poor dear feels rotten. I keep checking her temperature because she acts so depressed and I want to make sure she doesn't have an infection started but her temperature always hovers just under 100 so it's fine. I remember now that she got really sick the last time she had to be on antibiotics when she had a puncture wound near a tendon a few years ago.

The weirdest thing is that she is really getting a bag now and has dried milk on her teats every time I check. This mare always has milk but I've never seen her get a hard bag when she isn't pregnant. Can antibiotics do this?? She's on stall rest so there's no chance it's that plant that made Lacy get a bag.

Lacy always feels like crap on antibiotics too. The bag and milk is weird. I can only speak for Lace, but hers never changes when on antis. She is outside 24/7 though so I'm sure that impacts everything to some extent.

Is there ANY chance she's pregnant??

Oh... if you're feeding hay (I assume you are  ) there could be clover in it...

Re: ugh! Deja vu!!!

Hmm, I haven't noticed any clover in the hay. It's orchard grass from eastern Oregon.

The only way she could be pregnant is if Cory bred her through a fence and considering that there is such a huge size difference between them I doubt that could have happened. He needed a hill to breed an Arabian so I doubt he could have climbed up on Rosalynn on his own.

I have a call in to the vet to see if I can back off on the antibiotics at all. I feel awful for her every time I walk by her stall. :(

Re: ugh! Deja vu!!!

I just asked hubby and he said he has had experience with mares' hormones being screwed up by antibiotics so that's the most likely explanation. I agree I think it's highly unlikely Cory could manage, but stranger things have happened. You'll know something soon enough one way or the other. :laugh1

Yup! I wouldn't complain about another foal out of Rosalynn although she does not look pregnant at all so your husband is probably right.

I guess if Isabelle is any indication, she might not look very pregnant at all!

Well seeing as Luna managed to find Star and there is nearly a foot difference in height -- who knows. I do agree it is probably hormones though. You do know that antibiotics affects the effects of birth control pills right? (a lot of surprises occur because of antibiotics each year)

Antibiotics can mess with the birth control pill, so I imagine that it can mess with hormone levels without any sort of birth control going on...

Re: ugh! Deja vu!!!

Well I talked to the vet today and forgot to ask about Rosalynn's milk! She did tell me to go ahead and get her off the antibiotics if she's feeling so crummy. I took her out of her stall today and cold hosed the injury and all the injection sites and she seemed to enjoy that.
