What causes this?
He's a 'normal' grey horse with a chestnut snip (no other chestnut on his body): http://www.barbaralivingston.com/gallery/onthefarm/Duncan1" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Re: What causes this?

I believe its from incomplete penetration of the gray gene. Its normally called a blood mark.

Ditto that. Check it out:

I know you've seen Charmander. It's the same cause, just a different appearance.

Re: What causes this?

yes, that is what it is and is often seen for some reason on the shoulder..so it's called a bloody shoulder.

Awwww. That's too cool! 8-) I just feel the urge to pair that up with a chestnut with a snip at the same spot. (and can never find what I am looking for online)

Re: What causes this?

So the chestnut simply comes through here and there in random fashion. That's so odd! With this boy having a snip rather than big patch, I thought there might be some weird trick to it.

Thanks so much! And yes, vneerland, it would be great to find a chestnut 'match.' ;)

Is it just me or do you see white that used to be a marking and the "snip" going over it? I think I see an outline of a blaze, but it may just be the lighting...

Anyone else see it?

You see it now and again in Arabians. Bloody shoulders and all. I've seen a couple with the face markings.

Re: What causes this?

Yup! Whole right side of her face is. The top is just a bit more grayed than the bottom, but the mark is still pretty visible even thought she's mostly grayed out.
