Hey everybody, I just had a question for you color genetics savvy people out there... A couple years ago I bought a pregnant mare from an obvious dealer in efforts to save her and her unborn foal. She was advertised as pregnant, but when I went to see her for the first time, AND when I went again a couple days later she was in the same paddock as the stud that the owner said was the sire of the foal. My question is, could that particular stud truly be the father? My mare, Pippin has been called a bay roan, while others swear she is a bay varnish appaloosa. The father was a chestnut leopard appaloosa. Now the little foal was born what looked like a red dun, which eventually turned into a bay dun, which now completely roans out every summer. Is it possible to get that color foal with those colored parents? I can post pictures of both parents and the foal if needed. I'm not worried about it or anything, just curious :]
How old is the foal now?
How old is the foal now? Pictures of parents and the foal would help a lot too. If the foal truly is dun, then one parent would have to be dun, and a leopard appaloosa could hide dun easily, but its also possible that your foal isn't dun at all but just has countershading, and that is where photos would be very helpful. Other than dun, the bay is possible because the dam was bay, and the roaning is possible from true roan if the dam is or from varnish which the sire could contribute and the dam too if she is varnish instead (or with) classic roan.
