Max Sabino/Splash??

Re: Max Sabino/Splash??
I would always test when not sure, but if she has Frame I am not at all sure where it would have come from (breed wise, I mean, not sire or dam) as the AP is based on the Welsh, all sections.
The sire looks Tobiano / Splash to me, but, as always, better safe than sorry.
Re: Max Sabino/Splash??
Sire looks splash/sabino to me. The mare could be Sb1Sb1, or it could be dominant white as I am not adept at telling them apart like ACC. But for her to be deaf, she would need splash (or +/- frame) since dominant white and sabino haven't been known to cause deafness that I have found.
Re: Max Sabino/Splash??
I think Tobiano because the Splash is trying to white out the face and the Tobiano is trying to limit the white on the face...I know Splash gives some funky blazes but that is not a typical funky Splash blaze, not to me. Something else is going on and Tobi is the only one that would mess with the white on the face. All the other patterns encourage it.
We really really do need tests for Splash and all the rest of Sabino....how is that going, do you think??
Re: Max Sabino/Splash??
The black and white looks splash/sabino to me, no tobi. I think splash manages to do it's own weird blazes without tobi :?
Mare looks sb1sb1 to me but I can't tell the difference between it and dominant white anyway. Australian ponies shouldn't have frame but I'd suppose anything's possible so good to test.
Is anyone actually working on find more white pattern genes? You'd think if they found one sabino they might get close to finding more! Of course a splash test would be awesome!!
Re: Max Sabino/Splash??
OK, I used to own this little mare. She was given to me by her breeder & I did not know she was deaf, as she showed nothing to indicate she was. The breeders told me that she had little handling & had been running out in a big paddock & was timid. She was timid, but with a bit of handling, settled down alot.
Anyway, I was told she was cremello & that's what she looked like. I never bred a foal from her.
First of all, no chance of frame, no frame in Australian ponies. Her dam is a bucky (greyed out) & her dad is by a bucky stallion. Here it is interesting to note that sire & dam are half brother/sister by the welsh A stallion Menai Silver Sand (imp UK) who was legendary here in Oz for producing flashy sabinos/splash with of blue eyes & tall stockings & belly splashes. This little mare has a "double dose" of this stallion.
Also, as far as I know this mare has not been tested for cream. Dad is reg. as black but we assumed he was smoky black, having produced what appeared to be a cremello.
The dad has produced alot of progeny with funky markings like himself & extensive ticking as often seen on clydesdales.
His dam was tobiano, & he could be a tobi himself, but looking at his progeny, so far all of his tobi foals have been out of tobi mares.
I have no idea what colour/pattern she is, & she produced a "medicine hat" type foal to a solid bay stallion.
Can't wait to see what her test results say.
Re: Max Sabino/Splash??
Thorwood, you are a bloody legend, thanks for your post. :HB
Yep looks Cremello hey but isn't, has black skin blotches here & there, udder is half choc milk & half strawberry milk. :rofl
Sweet, so don't need to test for OLWS? Correct? Don't matter if i still need to. :?
Will get around to testing her for her base colour, i have another to test (homozygous & grey) but been soo slack & it keeps slipping my mind.
She was Reg as Cremello when i bought her, asked APSB to change it & stupid me said "just put Max Sabino", knowing they can't, so she's now Reg as Grey.
Thanks again Thorwood, appreciate your help.
She's still timid but i can assure she's 150% better, she even comes up to me in the paddock, sticky beaking for treats & i handle her without a leadrope, she's really good.
As for being deaf, well i'm not sure if she's 100% deaf as my mate was here the other day admiring the mini foals. Flirt was standing with us, head down, relaxed & in the paddock behind us, 2 mares had a squabble, loud/high pitched squeal. Flirt spun around quick smart to where the mares were..... so food for thought? Maybe she can only hear high pitched or loud noises, i'm not sure, she still twitches her ears about like a horse with hearing?
Re: Max Sabino/Splash??
Hi Kylie,
Well first of all, I am not sure that having small patches of pigment disqualifies her from being a DD. I have 5 DD mares & a couple of them have small patches like Flirt has, & they are definitely DD's. I remember the patch on Flirt's udder & it is tiny.
I also have a friend, a very well known breeder of welshies & double dilutes here, & she has also noticed small pigmented patches on her DD's.
Also, my perlino mare has more pumpkin coloured skin than pink.
I would think you should definitely test her for cream, as her dam was cream & possibly her sire.
Also, she could in fact be grey , as her dam is.
Please let us know when you find out what colour she is, I am breaking my neck to know now.
Re: Max Sabino/Splash??
My cremello boy has "freckles" but no black patches of skin but thats interesting to know Thorwood.
Here is her udder....

Spots on muzzle.

She also has "spots" on her neck, shoulder, stifle area etc.
Will let you know once i get the results back, shall send them all off next week. ;)

Mmm...anyone recall the Vavra shots of Andalusians with speckled skin and eyes? http://www.robertvavra.com/images/STOCK…" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Re: Max Sabino/Splash??
I don't think they're supposed to carry frame, but I'm not sure.
The mare's sire looks quite a bit like the horses we've come to know as dominant white here. The mare obviously fits that phenotype as well. Given the blue eyes I'm sure she has splash and/or frame. The sire looks as though he could have splash too, but that could have come from the dam anyway. Since the dam could have been tobiano you may be dealing with tobiano + splash + sabino + maybe frame. For some reason my gut is telling me she's not tobiano. I personally think she's dominant white as is the bub.
Compare this one to her sire:
