birdcatcher spots -- developing with age

one of our boarders horses has significant amounts of birdcatcher spots. EVERYWHERE. she says the horse developed them with age and when she purchased her as a 4 year old, she had none! the horse is now 22, is this typical of birdcatcher spots?

Extremely. Most I know don't show up until they're 8 or so, but they can come younger or older. They change with every shed. Some go away completely and never come back, some persist and spread. They're very random, sporadic little spots. :D

I had a pony that didn't develop birdcatcher spots until he was in his mid 20s. We always joked that he started forming them because he was jealous of the new appy that got put in his paddock.

When I bought Darwin at age 2 1/2 he had 1 Birdcatcher and 2 Bend Or spots. By age 10 he had a dozen of each and now I think he has 3 Birdcatcher and back to just 2 Bend Or - those pesky spots are just plain weird.
