What causes this?

CMHorses has a lovely Miniature stallion named Cartwheel. He generally looks "normal," colorwise (other than that really interesting blind eye...). Yet he's got a great patch of white hairs in his neck and scattered throughout his mane/forelock.
Where might that have come from?
Thanks for any thoughts!
Re: What causes this?
If the roan is getting bigger could be he's going grey - mane certainly looks that way. IME, for instance, Lipis go grey ar different rates, one foal I had went nearly grey by a year, another was mostly all black by 3, some are well into thier teens before they go white. Not saying that this is the case with this one but looks like it could be.
Re: What causes this?
The common answer will be sabino. A possible answer is tobiano (I personally believe tobiano can cause roan patches). I suspect this could be a somatic mutation of some type. It's too defined.
