Brown roan (unfortunately in winter coat so hard to see roan).
Re: Classic roan on liver chestnut or seal brown?
Thank you for the replies and yes, I am aware that there is only one lab testing for brown so far and that they have not published yet.
I am especially interested in seeing liver chestnut classic roans + brown classic roans, so thank you for posting that picture, Monsterpony! :D
Maybe there are more pictures around?
Actually I cannot remember that I have EVER seen a liver chestnut classic roan in my life...maybe they don't keep their dark heads? :?: ;)

:laugh1 Well, I can't say that I ever remember seeing a liver classic roan either, but I am sure there is one "somewhere"... :bounce and if they don't keep the dark head, then they aren't classic roan... :sad :laugh1
Re: Classic roan on liver chestnut or seal brown?
What I meant when I said they might not keep their dark head is that maybe the classic roan takes off the liver and they appear as simple red roans? :?:
On the other hand: Given liver is quite rare, there will not be so many around like "regular" chestnuts I assume - hence why I would like to see one! :P
Same goes for brown + classic roan... I was searching the older threads in order to find one - could it be that some GRULLOs are actually brown + roan???? Let aside there are different shades of grullos as well! :?
Re: Classic roan on liver chestnut or seal brown?
the QH mare on here, her owner calls her a liver chestnut with classic roan and rabicano....
http://www.themanestreet.com/forums/sho…" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
she was also listed on the old equinecolor.com page as the same
I think her reg. name is Win A Snip, she's a 1985 model...lol
Re: Classic roan on liver chestnut or seal brown?
i think she had a classic roan foal by a non roan stallion....but i'm not 100% on this...i'll see what I can find out
edit to add:
found that before Kaiti owned her, she had 6 foals...5 were roans.
i found names for some of them and their sires
-- All Sired by AQHA stallion True Blue Quincy --
- Quincy Blue Geronimo, red roan gelding
- Blue Snip Quincy, red roan gelding
- We Is Quincy's Winner
- Lady Daniella, red roan mare
-- Sired by APHA stallion Eternal Scribbles --
- Delightful Dance, sorrel overo mare
the pictures are no longer on the forums, but she used to have pics of the offspring. I'll shoot her a message on there and see if she still has them. I know that they looked more true roan than Sugar does.
Re: Classic roan on liver chestnut or seal brown?
Kaiti so wonderfully supplied me with a picture. This is Sugars appendix filly, a true roan, by the thoroughbred Malmo. She said the other roans(who's names I've supplied in the post before this) were by a solid chestnut QH and the only non roan was the paint filly.
wow...lookit how dark Sugar is behind the foal in the one picture too!
on another note...there is a buckskin stallion up the road a ways from me that is a roan, but looks even less roan than Sugar does. Sunfrost Bronsin is his name.
Re: Classic roan on liver chestnut or seal brown?
Thank you so much - these pics helped clarifying a lot for me... :D the QH mare actually looks like liver on the last pic only... if there were not her classic roan foals, I had not guessed her being classic + rabicano  since her head was quite the same color as her body! Thanks a lot RedHayflinger for mailing her owner! :D
Also thanks to admin: Has this mare been tested? So, I guess one could expect to find a brownish muzzle on a brown classic roan, just like on non-roan browns found quite often? I know it's not set in stone as a rule but in many cases? :?:
Acc: Yes, I have seen horses like this mare being called blue-roans too because people were going by the color of the body. ;)
admin: The photo you deleted...did the horse have a typical liver head or was it similar to this QH mare above? :?:
These roan-things have nagged at me for quite a while so I am glad I decided to join this board for more opinions! I appreciate the various input here and surely like the polite and respectful way of discussing! :HB :D
Re: Classic roan on liver chestnut or seal brown?
Seal brown is still a theroy, Seal brown tests Bay.IMO Till more labs are able to review and offer the "seal brown/bay" test it will still be in my mind theroy.
