colour help

posting for a friend ,he thought this mini was silver bay but has since produced a perlino foal to a palomino mare so the horse must be buckskin or silver buckskin????

Third Peppermint Fri, 02/18/2011 - 16:42

I'd say silver brown buckskin! I can definitely see the cream in him.

I agree with the others which is why in some pics the points are not as obvious as with a norml bucky

I thought a buckskin was a bay horse with cream ? If this guys dam is palomino and the sire is a a brown based horse with silver and cream ,wheres the bay ? I am confused !
I thought a buckskin was a bay horse with cream ? If this guys dam is palomino and the sire is a a brown based horse with silver and cream ,wheres the bay ? I am confused !
The palomino dam would have carried "A".

But everyone on this thread (IIRC) thinks hes brown based, so theres no need for Bay.

He looks silver buckskin with cream to me. Why do those of you that think he is a silver "brown" think that? He even has silver black points so surprised to see so many of you think brown? Plus he has produced a bay foal out of a pally mare.

Krickette Sat, 02/19/2011 - 22:08

I see silver brownskin as well.
Slaney, the bay from a pally mare could have been from the pally mare having the bay gene. Remember agouti doesn't express on red.

slaneyrose Sat, 02/19/2011 - 23:21

But what is it about the look of him that makes you think his base colour is brown and not bay??

Daylene Alford Sun, 02/20/2011 - 07:25

Brown (At) is another agouti alle like bay (A). It is recessive to bay so if he had a regular bay foal that foal would have gotten A from its dam. A horse that is AAt will be bay. A brown horse will be Ata or AtAt. A brown horse can have points like a bay horse but they are generally darker. Check the I'm looking for modifier pics thread. At the end there is a photo of a tested brown mare that is about the same shade.

Hope this helps.

I can see why you are confused, Kim, but I actually do see Silver Brownskin, here, he is almost classic, if you wanted a "pattern" for the colour.

slaneyrose Sun, 02/20/2011 - 11:07

The trouble for me is that there are often several shades of one colour so one picture isnt proof enough for me....and since there is no test for it and no real clear proof visually or otherwise, I guess I will have to hope the owner tests. :-)

Third Peppermint Sun, 02/20/2011 - 11:58

Bay and brown are both alleles of agouti, which is why we call him brown buckskin instead of just buckskin. The bay can hide in red-based horses, like the palomino. You can breed a palomino and a brown and get a bay.

Edit: How did I not see that there was a second page? Disregard!

slaneyrose Sun, 02/20/2011 - 12:10

I have just been told this from the owner of the stallion.
q)He produced a blood bay foal from a black minimal pinto mare, so that means he has to be a buckskin, yes?(q

rabbitsfizz Sun, 02/20/2011 - 12:49

No, it just means he is A At---- have I got that right?
I am still wading through this Brown stuff, so Kim you are in good company- it is confusing when you have been used to just referring to it as "That strange looking Bay over there"

I'd like to see photos of the foal and dam. There IS a test for brown and a pretty noticeable phenotype IMO.
