Looks like a chestnut with a dark mane and tail, not that uncommon really.

I'd say it's not SUPER common but not rare, either. I've seen a few. Peanut (Tickle x Cory from last year) is getting a chocolate brown mane and a flaxen tail. I'll take photos if he EVER decides to shed this summer! He's the last one holding on to hair and there is no way I can clip him... little terror...

Not uncommon. It seems especially prevalent in certain breeds.

Really good looking horse.

Interesting!!!
I do not think the mane is black, but I also see just a hint of colour on the legs....so, two possibilities. (Unless he is out of two chestnuts, of course!!)
a) He is minimal Wild Bay
b) He is Chestnut with a dark mane and tail!!

i can see int he pic that the tail is not pure black, i see a red hue to it, sometimes you have to really take the pics int he sun to see the true color, a stall can be tricky.

Re: chestnut with black mane and tail

Well bays tails often have a red hue too. And I HAVE seen chestnuts with tails that look completely black (even though they supposedly can't be).

Yeah, the one I knew with coloring like this was also a Thoroughbred. The stable manager had him down on his paperwork as bay when he first came in and I corrected her. My money is still on chestnut with this one as well although I agree that bays can have reddish manes and tails on occasion.

I've also seen other thoroughbreds like that (but then again I'm most familiar with them so that's kinda circular logic). It can be really confusing--from the neck up they can be a dead ringer for bay but then the rest of the body is clearly not.

Do you mean like this? This is my mare Poco Smokey Valley - "Valley"...as you can see her mane is BLACK - not a drop of red showing and her tail is the same. She DNA tests as ee/Aa so she is definitely chestnut.

I think the original mare is definitely chestnut. Her muzzle doesn't have the black look that I'd expect to see on a bay.
