Oh yeah! I forgot it's baby
Oh yeah! I forgot it's baby season!!! How exciting!
I'm pretty pleased with Jazzy's progress! I can't remember if I posted about it already but she got a 56.875 at her first show ever! And my first Dressage show ever! Which was also my first show period in like...5 years or something! There was another one last week I was originally planning to go to but I forgot the date haha. I should write these things down.
Do not ride her
Do not ride her bareback.....a horse with a back problem + bareback with a rider sitting right on the spine is a no-no!
The reason she is running away is because she is evading the situation on her "bad" side- it takes a horse AGES to realise something that has caused discomfort in the past is no longer doing so. My advise would be (apart from not lunging her, build a round pen)to start her from a standstill on both sides and actually put her, strongly, into a fast canter from word go, so she is always obeying you. This is why I will lead a recalcitrant horse up to the trailer ramp and say firmly "WHOA"- getting the horse to believe it is obeying your command is half the battle. Then , when you say "Walk on" the horse walks into the trailer- I used to do this for a living and, trust me, it works! (And I got it, verbatim, from "My Friend Flicka" when I was nine!)
So push her on, make her canter, keep her cantering and when she wants to slow make her do one more loop then ask her to slow down. Only when she will do this on both reins should you ask her to start slowly again- I always start off pushing the horse, anyway, as it puts you in charge straight away- "I say go, so, you go"
Nice to have you back btw!
If I could build a roundpen I
If I could build a roundpen I would, I have wanted one for years now. But right now the extra time/money just isn't there. Dad's plant is shutting down and... yeah. It's not going to happen.
I am continuing to have the Chiro out though, and she has been improving! We're excited about that!
Great to hear from you,
Great to hear from you, Krickette! And even better to get an update on Jazz! The whole forum has been slow lately, I think most people are really busy with spring, new foals arriving and whatnot.
