What Pattern(s) On This Pinto

These are the only pictures I have of him. They were scanned and printed off and came with my SSH when I got her. It's of her sire. Also...if anyone knows how I could find his owner or previous owners if he has been sold, I'll love you forever...been trying to find more info on him for the past few years. His name is Rattle and Snap and he's a gaited 40 inch SSHBEA stallion. Supposed to be black, but he doesn't look it in these pictures. My mares breeders said he stood at Black Hawk Stallions in Columbia TN and gave me a website, but it no longer worked when I got around to checking it a few months after I bought my mare. The only page I've found with any info(and it's the same info they gave me) was my mares breeders site. I've tried sending e mails to them, with no luck. anyway....here he is...What patterns you think? I always thought he was neat looking

I was going to say splash and tobiano. I see no reason to think frame and I've gotten where I won't include sabino unless it's blatantly obvious (it gets tiring calling every single horse on the planet sabino).

Splash due to the blue eye and extremely obvious "falling off one side" blaze. Tobiano... well it's obvious.

Blue eyes could also be due to Frame but also has those lovely jaged edges to the pattern which is sometimes due to frame, I agree with ACC about splash and Tobi - I put sabino in because it usually is !!! :rofl

I see Splash and Tobiano and I do think Sabino as the edges of the body white are jagged, but agree that it is not blatant.
I would test for Frame because it makes sense to.....

As for the sire: Tobiano + Splash...the filly: Tobiano heterozygous + Splash homozygous hence the enhanced amount of white from bottom up... ;)

I dont think tobiano restricts, it just is or isnt, I think there is a differnt cause for supression. I was doing some deep thinkin on a bucket tonight LOL

rabbitsfizz Sat, 07/18/2009 - 04:13

Both Sabino and Splash seem to have that affect on Tobiano...that is how you get Medicine Hats and Warbonnets, they tend to isolate out the colour to the extremes...for me the "falling off the back of the bum" colour is typical of Splash.

Heather Sat, 07/18/2009 - 07:02

Now I dont think the falling of the bum white on a tobiano is splash at all, My filly has a "haze" of white falling off the bum and Im pretty darn sure there is no splash what so ever. I think that is jsut a trait of tobiano itself, + or - from her some supression. Or maybe its as we have seen in some non tobiano horses a sabino spot falling off the hip that is jacked up when tobiano is present and allows the sabino to be there, sorta weaker of the 2.

i'll have to get some better pics sometime, these are old(and hairy!)...but what causes the white from the blaze to continue on like this under the jaw? Again, this is my mare Gypsy

she also does this funky fading every september...but this year she's started it earlier....most blacks I've seen fade out go to a dull brown...she fades a golden yellow brown, but only on certain spots, and never her face.
