Strange markings please help

Hi My miniature is a bay and white, after his recent clip he has developed some strange markings within his coat, I am a complete colour dummy and know practically nothing about colour so please bear with me. These markings are just on the top of his rump and no where else. This is him as a foal with his dam(below)

Hi there,

The markings are called Lacing. No exact cause seems to explain them, though rain rot, fungus and allergic reactions have been implicated in some cases. But they also occur randomly and without explanation. We have an example of an Arabian filly with them in the Photo Gallery - http://www.equine-color.info/index.php?…" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Ahem, supaspot isnt there a saying, "self praise is no praise"?? :laugh1 :D My 2yr old Sterling has white lacing on his left hip and down to his gaskin, I think its just one of those unexplained things for now.

Ha ha sue yes I bought him from you and I am sooooo pleased with him, he is such a nice mannered sweet boy, not coltish at all, when at home he comes and sits on your knee if I am sat on the floor :laugh1 :laugh1

I have also noticed that he has black appearing on his face, inbetween and around his eyes (will try and get a pic later) and also white hairs on top of his rump, Like I said I am completly clueless when it comes to colour and I have never seen this before.
His sire is a leopard spot pictured below

Thats a shame he got marked down - I would have thought the judge could see past that. :x

You could always show him in unusual colour though. ;)
so its lacing, now does that stay or does it disappear???
He was marked down in a colour class because of it.
Wha?!!?! Why on earth would they do that? I've never known how color classes are judged though.... I think it should boost him up for uniqueness. I love lacing, Splash had some. She was a bay tobiano too! or...brown....

This is why I do not do "colour" classes, sorry!!
Did we not consider it attached to Sabino at one time??
There appear to be more than one source for this, a bit like Chimerism, one is genetic and one appears to be some form of allergic reaction.
I don't think we ever considered the possibility of it being an inherited predisposition to a reaction??

I think i remember a standerdbred or some such that passed his on regularly....do not recall his name though...
Also, here's a picture of Splash and the lacing she was begining to develop (bad picture in a winter coat >.<

She is tobiano for sure, I can't tell you anything else, lol!

oh thats cool!

would this be considered beginning lacing? sooty buckskin, she was allways going through whacky dapples and brindling and stuff lol. Then this showed up summer, 2 year old. I sold her that winter so I dont know if it grew or not. :sad

that winter it disapeared into silver fluff with a light false dorsal. much of her dapples and stuff seemed to be cause by having banded hairs.

There are lots of white hairs appearing on his rump, they are more noticeable now his coat is growing back, I dont know if his sire or dam has any lacing, supaspot bred him and owns both his parents.

I was a bit shocked after my daughter came out of the colour class with him and she said the judge told her that she placed him down the line because of the "weird markings", It wouldnt bother me if he has it all over, he is such a sweetie :D

At the end of the day that is what matters - everyone knows they take the best horse, cat or dog home from a show anyway. ;)

slaneyrose Tue, 07/21/2009 - 18:02

My 2yr old "Sterling Surprise" has very flashy white lacing over his left hip and down to his hock, and he was supreme champion at his only show this year, 3rd at MHAI yearling class last year, champion american horse....., champion yearling and overall champion plus reserve reserve supreme champion at a show in Kildare being judged by 2 different judges (he had so many rossettes and saches we could barely see him!! Lol) ..........it certainly hasnt interfered in his show career, but maybe it would have if I had put him in the colour class! I dont do colour classes tho. :love :rofl :rofl
(with my silver grullo blanket spot mare, Lulu, wonder what a colour judge would make of her :laugh1 )

I was horrified when I first clipped him last year and saw this strange marking, and actually found out what it was by putting it on here. Now I kinda like it and have noticed that a couple of other foals have small patches of sabino(?) roaning (not near any white) just without the lacing (yet anyway) so I would go with the inherited theory for now.

If you're talking about the standy that looks like that that's here in NZ, IIRC, it tested positive for tobiano. Now, Christian Cullen has a son, Tomahawk, that's marked very similarly, with the white on the withers, but I believe he's also got white in front of the tail. Don't know if he's been tested.

Good to know, thanks! I could have sworn that I was told he had lacing but tobiano is cool......Im just glad it grew on me and I dont mind looking at it every day now!! lol

supaspot60 Thu, 07/23/2009 - 18:29

The dam definately doesnt have lacing although I believe she does carry sabino ( shes minimal tobi) its impossible to say if the sire has any as hes a leopard spot , If it turns white I think it would be very pretty !
