Re: Simple proud flesh treatment?

It's a lousy photo, it's definitely proud flesh. It was originally a tiny puncture wound.

Hubby's not a vet, he's a PhD.

People medicine?

...for some reason, "sugardine" is stuck in my head. A paste-like mixture of sugar and betadine. I also understand any non-seasoned meat tenderizer would also work...

Yeah I've been hearing about the meat tenderizer from everywhere. It's worth a shot.

His PhD is in animal breeding and genetics with a minor in statistics and he also has an M.S. in animal science.

OMG :-o - OUCH!!! I would not even ATTEMPT to mess with that. That would be a vet call with hospitalization for any of my babies. :ympray:

If it has been going on a for a while you 'd have to wonder if it was fungal or ??? definately a vet needs in on this baby, yikes! If Im not mistaken there is like a cancer that gets in below heals and in hoof area that can create this issues, yowza..

*shudders from Heebie-Jeebies* ...that looked like proud flesh gone wild. I think a vet would need to cut the proud flesh away and decide on the best course of treatment (wrapped?, unwrapped?, wet-to-dry wrapped?) for a wound like that.

Wow I'd be really concerned if I was in your shoes (no doubt you are). Yep would be in the hands of the vet.

In reply to ACC, have you tried honey? I used to use manuka but have had great success with bush honey (non heated locally sold stuff).

I've actually just been watching it for right now. It appears to be improving on it's own so I'm kinda letting it run it's course and then I'll help it along if I need to.
