silver , smokey black or just black ?

This is one I would be inclined to test.
At first glance, Black, BUT.....if he has Silver + Cream then the effect of Silver could well be inhibited.
He looks a dark Silver, but as we know, Blacks can easily look that colour at birth.

Definitely black silver +- cream. You don't get eyelashes that color on normal blacks.

His eyelashes look very pale in that pic and I have heard silvers have pale eyelashes ,but why did taz have white eyelashes?Was that because scooter has frame????Is taz an ordinary black roan or is he a silver black roan or is there such a thing? :rofl Sorry to be a pain ,just trying to figure out these colours??

Sue would be able to describe taz better to you!!He is a black roan colt that sue owns ,out of a bay roan mare by her black stallion with blue eyes!!He is a grandson of my bayroan stallion!!I thought I vaguely remember him having white eyelashes as a foal !!But I will let sue explain ,about his colour as I am only a newbie!! :flower

I thought the colour of this foals skin suggested silver ???

Taz is black roan with minimal splash , he has a large star that just "touches " his eye giving him white lashes on one eye ,heres a pic of him (no relation to this foal)

Yup, I agree, it's the splash causing that.

The OP foal DOES have that funky foal skin generally associated with silver. No doubt he's silver in my mind.

Ahhh so what Tazs pale eyelashes on one eye was caused by what a continuation of his splash ?Unlike the white eyelashes of silvers?I think I have it now !!Thanks!! :rofl

can anyone explain theses strange markings on the back of the foals ears ? the hair is the same length so its not malting plus its only a few days old anyway

I have seen that, coupled with definite Dun markings, on a non Dun Silver foal....so, any chance of Silver???

yes I've seen it on a mini with dun but not without.

silver AND cream are possible , this is the same foal from the original post !

Then I think the Silver is causing the faux Dun markings and the Cream is inhibiting the Silver expression.

Are there any stripes on the hooves?

hooves are mostly white , black is starting to show on three of them but too early to say if they will be the right shape to indicate if silver is present

stripes are appearing on his feet , are they the right shape? I read that silver makes stripes that are wide at one end and narrow at the other but which way up should they be ?

There is a typical silver foal hoof in this collage:

But I am not sure how old the foal is or what the hoof looked like before it grew into that.

My weanling silver filly has hooves more like in that collage than the foal in question. I won't be able to get pictures of her feets though until the weekend, as it's dark when I get home!

However, they're not often born with the stripes from what I've seen, and I don't know what they look like as they're growing in.

I cant remember either, but if Phoenix has another silver this time (due saturday) I will let you know. :-D ...does he have any white on him?

Just throwing this into the pot but he is a similar colour to my boy before the grey took over that is, my boy also has 4 socks so no striped hooves even though he is silver black !!!!!!!!

Thats interesting Lipi, I wonder if the greying gene effects the hoof colour too???? Hmmmmm.
