Re: A puzzling Appy....

I absolutely agree RF ( ). Since Dian had/has a mare who's characteristics were only found with a speculum, I think it's perfectly reasonable to think that some might only show spots. if he's produced three spotted foals from three apparently non spotted dams, that's pretty clear evidence IMO.

There is no way the dams could be 'hiding' Lp? This guy is definitely one of the reasons why that Lp test is soooo needed... le sigh.

Oh, ACC, Miss Pearl has finally decided that she needs proper appaloosa hoof striping, it's just come in on all 4s in the past month, at the age of something like 17yo...so she's "growing" more characteristics. :rofl

Back to the original horse, I'm more than willing to say I could be wrong, especially if I were able to see him in the flesh, but that photo is just not saying "appy" to me, still.

Re: A puzzling Appy....

I've seen many minimal traited LP horses. I've never seen any without white sclera or mottling somewhere. If this horse has white legs from another pattern, that eliminates LP striped feet. You won't see them. However, you should see white sclera & mottling if he carries LP. If he has no other traits but a few spots, that's not good enough for LP.

Thing is, I know there are horses that can have such thin striping that no registry would count it, such minimal sclera, you really have to be in the right place at the right time to see it, in the right light (heck, I think it was Rebecca who saw Pearl's sclera, and we'd had owned her for a couple of years without noticing it!).

For registry purposes, this boy would be classified as "solid". For reality, if the dams can be definitely proven to be non-Lp (i.e., not minis, and definitely not a breed known for Lp), and the foals came up spotted, then the conclusion would have to be that Lp came from the stallion. Any chance of test breeding like that?

If she also has other visible LP traits, then yes, she is LP.
I've had several LPs that had internal mottling only but had other LP traits showing....striped feet, sclera etc.
My gelding has a full blanket, white sclera but only has mottling on his genitals. He has tobi & splash so his white legs cover any LP striping or lightning marks he may have.

Well I wish Dian would input on this as the mare had NO other characteristics, but passed LP to her foal(s).

No, Pearl does have all the characteristics but coat pattern, BUT they are so minimal as to not count for registry purposes, except for the "new" hoof-striping which is a recent development, to be of acceptable registry levels. She's produced two leopards, one near leopard and two "solids" (the first solid I never saw, the second is Ebony, who seems she might be hiding Lp like her mother).

I can't post photos as they belong to Dian. I'm not sure where Dian has run off to these days. I'm sure she'll chime in when she comes back.

What photos of Pearl do you have, ACC? Oh, I have forgotten to mention that Pearl has a disappearing spot, like a teardrop under her eye...her hormonal levels during pregnancy seem to affect it.

Well, how do you explain three spotted foals then???

You did say that you can't get permission to post photos of the other foals/dams, right? Dang if that's true...

I don't see any photos of her Dian, I was just saying I couldn't possibly post photos of your mare.

Ahh, okay. I was wondering if I had sent you some and had forgotten about it (an easy thing for me to do. LOL)

This is the kind of thread that makes me go screaming into the night!

Diane, would you please post photos

You hit on something here. Registries don't always have common sense. There are many LP horses that grow into their traits.
Most have minimal sclera as foals, but some need time.
Mottling can come within weeks, some takes longer.
Hoof striping can change from solid to striped...striped to solid....non pigmented to striped or just one stripe etc. You really must check the same horse over time for changes.

This mare was AQHA registered. Her 1/2 sister is my palomino mare who has stripped feet and also sclera. This mare was 23 I believe when this pic was taken. I don't remember if she also had sclera.
