Mule question!

OK, went on the huge trail ride, and there was an awesome mule there. All of the skin that I could see (face, under the tail, belly, etc) was pink. All four hooves were white. Both eyes were blue. Now, in some places it looked as though it might have more yellowish hair, but it was faint, and could have just been stained. The rider was an older man, and when I asked about her color, he said "Well she's white." I said that she was very pretty, asked if I could take pictures, etc. He also mentioned that he wondered if she was albino because of her eyes and hooves, and that he'd looked it up but couldn't figure it out. My best guess is that she's pale palomino that happens to have some sort of markings over every place where the skin actually showed. I didn't get to look and see what color her skin was anywhere else. Here are some pictures::

I'm thinking that might be cremello. The shade of the eyes is right for it.

How did Nike hold up?

I thought so too at first, but then I didn't think mules could be cremello....I don't know much about them though.

And Nike was actually full of himself the whole time, lol! He wanted to run run run. A lot of it was on roads, but usually there was some grass on the side so I could give him a reprieve. Honestly I was glad for the concrete at times, because that was a good way to let him relax off the bit without worrying about him trying to prance off. I mean, he wouldn't have gone far, but his worst habit is wanting to pony every horse! He wants to catch them, cut them off, and slow them down. I couldn't convince him it wasn't a race, lol!

I thought the same thing, however, the more I look the more I see dirt. I really think this mule is white, and dirty. The eye color could be related to the white pattern. I'm pretty sure mules can't be CRCR.

Oh another note. The hooves. *faint*

Looks to me like a light Palomino Pinto with Splash. That would account for the blue eyes.

I clearly see a bald face and a dividing line between Palomino and white above the right hock. Looks like a white area on the rump as well, but not as sure of that.

I wish I could have chased her around with a hose and gotten a good look at her skin color, lol!

From my mule research, she probably is white. More than likely from a spotted x tobi or appy cross that went wild on the white. Or just a single white pattern gone crazy.
Mules can't be anything that is homozygous since they only get 1 copy of a gene from each parent and donkeys dont have the Cr cream, only ivory which is similar to a double cream dilute horse, but is double recessive so it still would not show in a mule.

Oh and the reason I said tobi is because sabino, splash and frames effect on mules has not really been documented.
Also I would agree with dirty white or palimino, depending on the donkey parent, you could throw in donkey dun, roan or even greying or really any of those from the horse too as even body colors can skew in mules.

I wonder if creme + ivory could have this kind of effect? Kinda of like how pearl + cream has a greater effect than either alone.

CMhorses Mon, 03/23/2009 - 19:22

I think thats very unlikely because I've never seen ivory in anything other than minis, but that certainly does not mean other donkeys aren't carriers of it or that its impossible.
I think something more likely could be dunalino, espicially if the mule has white that covers up the legs and considering that the coat colors can be skewed.

I've never seen Ivory in minis.....pictures please if anyone has any??
Can Donkey be Palamino, if so then why can't you have a Pally horse cross Pally donkey?...really not too sure on Mule genetics....but this one does have a slightly dirty look to it.

CMhorses has some pictures of ivory donkeys on the donkey color genetics page.

Yes, there is definitley a colour called Ivory in Donkeys but I have never heard of it in Minis....did you mean Mini Donkeys??
