Maya foal this morning and she is a sweet little filly...still learning the ropes, but she is getting there. We don't have a name for her yet as Matt is on the road and this is HIS foal...I promised him Maya's first pali foal after we had to put Little Arthur down when he broke his leg. Any ideas as to what would make a horse that shiny if it isn't champaign? I quess what I'm asking is if there is something that I should test for that would answer her coat/color questions.

Daylene Alford Mon, 05/04/2009 - 06:02

It may be something similar to what the Akhal Teke have. Theirs has something to do with the hair shaft but I don't remember what. There is no test for it although an experienced someone looking at the hair shaft could probably identify it.

critterkeeper Mon, 05/04/2009 - 08:18

An experienced person like say HOOFPICK - lol. :laugh1 Oh well, I guess I will just have to love them the way they are... :love

accphotography Mon, 05/04/2009 - 09:13

Yeah if it is the satin gene Hoofpick could tell you. They have a hollow hair shaft.

She's not champagne though, and I don't know of anything else she could be. I suspect it's just the cream really glowing in her case.

critterkeeper Mon, 05/04/2009 - 15:15

But Maya shines even more than Goldie and she doesn't carry cream at all. SO I shall remain clueless -- :-?? she did come from a testing facility so who knows what bloodlines she has (she was supposed to be AQHA registerable, but "I" never saw any papers).
:BH

But how shiney is Goldie? Not all creams shine, but some certainly do quite alot.

critterkeeper Mon, 05/04/2009 - 16:27

Both are so shiney they reflect the flash of the camera making most closeups look over developed (I guess that's the term I'm looking for) and way too bright (without any photoshopping - all I do is crop and reduce size so they can be posted easily). B-)

Congrats!

I don't know why, but I seem to have been missing this whole, entire forum....

critterkeeper Sun, 05/10/2009 - 12:28

Jenks, I have been staring at mares waiting to foal for so long, even I have missed 3/4 of the post...and I actually have Hubby out today taking pixs in the sun (I did something stupid again and now have to deal with the pain - I know better than to try and move feed bags... :hammer ) :laugh1

critterkeeper Sun, 05/17/2009 - 13:15

Okay guys - I am always bugging everyone else for new pixs, so here are updated pixs of Goldie (i.e. Maya's Golden Deer - hey I didn't name her a 4 yr old did...he has seen Hercules too often). She is growing and putting on good weight, so she is progressing nicely even with all this rain.

It is still too wet for me to risk getting into the pasture (mud too deep and slick for my crazy legs) so I am having to depend on phone pixs from the gate. Now get this, she comes right up to us for loving right up to the time we pull the phone out to take pixs (same with a camera - she is photo shy to be sure). So in all the pictures she looks like she is about to jump and run and even has her body/legs facing away from me (either that or that foal has some really twisted legs :laugh1 )

Here she is looking just adorable while listening to the dogs barking way back in the woods (I suspect she is NOT deaf - )

Oh and here is mostly profile view (as close as I could get her to stand for - hard to pose a 2 1/2 wk old foal)

And this is the darkest one (it was fixing to rain - AGAIN - have I move to the PNW? :sad )

Oh, I love her - too bad I have a home for her already (I would have loved to have kept this one...even hubby agrees) and I know that another foal from this pairing just would not be the same (although I could be wrong - I doubt it).

critterkeeper Mon, 04/26/2010 - 17:55

Thinks rodeoratdogs for reminding me I need to update Goldie's pixs from last year...phone and PC still not talking, but will get the Kodak out in the am. and get new pixs - she has the whitest mane I have ever seen on a pali (even unwashed) and it really stands out against her deep golden coat.

Did you find my post from this past week? It's a girl?

rodeoratdogs Mon, 04/26/2010 - 20:49

I'm not sure, I will have to look, I haven't had any baby's since Illusion in my profile pic but I have a really cute video of her when she was a baby I should share..... :flower
Yeah I want to see Goldie!
