Thoughts?

Guess the breed without looking at the file name! [img]http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v225/thirdpeppermint/baysabinoarab1.j…] Constructive criticism is welcome. Very, very welcome.

Danni Sun, 09/19/2010 - 19:16

Part arab? Or a breed derived from arabs? Or even full arab I guess, the only reason I thought not was that most people here seem to put up pictures of the very modern arabs? Actually the more I look I'm happy with full arab!

Monsterpony Sun, 09/19/2010 - 20:05

Arabian, though the head looks more QH to me. Gorgeous though.

Third Peppermint Sun, 09/19/2010 - 21:02

It is an Arab, but based off of the more old-fashioned/ Polish Arab. I'm going to do an Egyptian/ modern next when I get the chance.

Danni Sun, 09/19/2010 - 21:40

Yeh I think it's the big jaw on the head that makes him look a bit QH? I do like him though!

Krickette Sun, 09/19/2010 - 22:28

The neck looks a tad thick and the head seems off...I think what throws me most about the head is it's hard to tell that it's turned at first, it just looks short. I don't know. It is very pretty though. With all the shine I almost guessed akhel teke!

accphotography Sun, 09/19/2010 - 22:48

He looked VERY Arab to me. I had no doubt he was. However I have looked at ALOT of old Polish.

Third Peppermint Mon, 09/20/2010 - 11:23

Hmmm, I didn't realize it was hard to tell his head was turned. That definitely needs fixed!

Thanks guys!

TheRedHayflinger Mon, 09/20/2010 - 12:04

i thought polish or even shagya, but an arab type for sure.

accphotography Mon, 09/20/2010 - 15:50

His nose is tipped toward the camera... err... your pencil. LOL! I can see it, but more shading might make it more apparent.

Krickette Mon, 09/20/2010 - 16:25

I mean, I can tell after looking at it, but at first glance it's difficult. Some shading on the neck and more definition of the face would help.
I don't know what it is about the neck/head that seems out of place. If I cover that part of the drawing and look at just the body it's fabulous, looks like a photograph... but I don't know, the way the neck connects to the chest and head seems odd to me. Sorry I can't be more specific >.<
It is absolutely wonderfully drawn though, I couldn't do that if my life depended on it

Bring the white down below the knees (about mid pastern) get rid of the white on the lip, and it could almost be a dead ringer for the horse I rode in Iran--tribal bred Arab.

Diane

accphotography Sun, 09/26/2010 - 17:03

I actually liked it better before (before I noticed the missing white, which I do miss LOL).

Tianateke Thu, 09/30/2010 - 19:21

Smaller muzzle and lighter through the throat latch, a little flatter shoulder (see how it seems to be concave?). I liked the first better also! The mane loose was clearly arab, if he is in braids I don't think they would go all the way up? But the white was too high, just make sure to color the chestnuts now. Really just tweaking with perfection...you did awesome!

nerd Thu, 09/30/2010 - 20:12

I think the cleaner look makes the imperfections of the face stand out more--I would move the eye up a bit, make the cheek smaller (and more seen in perspective as opposed to side-on), make the mouth less flat, and overall give it more defined shading/contrast. I like the subtle shading at the top of the blaze and the shape of the forehead/ears.
I would also move the rear chestnut down a tad and make it smaller, and do a little work on the hooves (smaller + make the perspective consistent between all 4).
You've done a superlative job on the shading in the body!

Krickette Thu, 09/30/2010 - 21:41

Exactly, Nerd. I think it's the cheek that still seems to throw the head off for me. And I feel as though the neck and head still just don't fit the body correctly. And the body seems a touch long to me, but that may be because I am so used to Nike who has a very short body (and fat belly tat makes it look even shorter) I feel super nitpicky, but that's just what seems off. I don't know, this is what I usually did back when I was drawing:

Horses are very...well proportioned, so for me if something was off and I couldn't pick it out, then I'd flip it upside down and it suddenly became more obvious...

That aside, it's still incredible. Apart from the things I'm being so nitpicky about, the rest of it looks like a photograph!

NZ Appaloosas Thu, 09/30/2010 - 23:29

Uhmmmmm, horsie's downunder suddenly????? (pix is upside down)

Diane

Krickette Thu, 09/30/2010 - 23:42

haha, i did it on purpose. I know there are lots of people who do it, look at a picture upside down to see if the proportions are right... It just makes whatever is wrong pop out easier for some reason.

accphotography Fri, 10/01/2010 - 00:02

When you did it it made the underside of the neck, the throatlatch and the length of the head stand out to me... which was kinda where I was at before but couldn't quite place.

Third Peppermint Fri, 10/01/2010 - 11:22

You guys rock! That's super helpful. :D I'll get to work on fixing things when I get home.

nerd Fri, 10/01/2010 - 12:39

Also, this may sound totally psycho, but the grass kinda grates on me. (bear with me, I know) I like the grassy texture you've created, but it should be subject to the same rules of perspective as anything else. Same thing for the sky. Having the background up to the same standards as the horse will help present it nicely and without distraction.
For example, a couple quick changes
[img]http://i223.photobucket.com/albums/dd21…]

Third Peppermint Fri, 10/01/2010 - 14:51

Yeah, I hate the grass and sky. It was totally a hack job and I dislike it very much so. No clue why I kept using it. Maybe I wanted to be consistent? The whole background is going to be changed to a gracel road/walkway thing and a fence behind it. You can even see where I got lazy and stopped changing the grass size.

I actually am going to be taking the next horse off a background entirely so that I can work on the physical characteristics more. I want it to appear to have mass and I think having the hooves done better will help with that.

Lots and lots of tweaking needs done with this fella, but I will say that (next to hair) the head and neck are by far the hardest.

Thanks for the advice, I'm writing this all down! I like how you did the horizon and made the shadow look more like a real shadow due to lighting. :D

Jenks Fri, 10/08/2010 - 20:13

O. Just read from the get go... Didn't know! The tippy ears are arab! And I agree, older model fashion, but good job~! I see a bay Raktha. or maybe Nasra? NO- Rasim!! Rasim neck and Raktha body.... Natez fits the whole thing just about..

Ok - I gotta stop flipping through my books. Fun though! Thanks!

Abu Farwa fits too.
