Smokey Grulla

Does anyone have pics of a true Smokey Grulla, Grulla + Cream, I think I know what it looks like but want to make sure, is it the super light Grullas?

No, like black you can't (usually) tell by looking. Some smokey grullas will be light and some will be dark, some will fade and some won't.

LOL! ok so it may or may not show is that what you are saying? That one I posted is that one "smokey/cream" or is just a light colored grulla?

Daylene Alford Sun, 11/14/2010 - 19:35

Well personally, I don't think cream shows on a black base at anytime but there are those who disagree.

They have so called 'silver grullas' that are as light as the first one, without cream?

Daylene Alford Sun, 11/14/2010 - 19:53

Most aren't quite that light as that one but yes they are light and without cream.

Creme on black (in a photo), to me, looks like the horse came from a black-and-white photo, and photoshopped into a colour photo, if that makes sense.

Yeah isn't smokey black or cream on black a bit lighter that black like super dark greyish?

......and the reason I was asking about the smokey grulla is that I am still considering Dun it Ok for a stud and he does carry cream, my results on the coat calculator with him are bay dun, dunskin, grulla and smokey grulla.

IMPE smokey blacks CAN (but definitely don't always or even nearly always) occasionally appear as something other than black. (One I know very well looks like milk chocolate even without sun fading.)

The sire of my friends buckskin is a smokey grulla mare (not tested but proven by her foals, pally, bucky out of a bay over and over again :) )

Just as with Smoky Black, where the Cream can show, but often does not, a Smoky Grullo will sometimes show the Cream. That example, though, IMO, will test "normal" Grullo.
It is a nice clear Dun, but that does not need Cream to show up.
In fact, Cream showing on Black often "muddies" it up to the point where we have those "Buckskin or Smoky Black" conversations.
This, I believe, would be called "Ullsblak" in Fjords?

I remember one horse in a barn I was working in, about 1990 I think. His sire was Smokey Commander who is registered black but he carried dun. Anyhow this horse was the darkest Grulla I have ever seen, he looked like a Smokey black but he was just light enough to make out his black dorsal stripe and his leg bars. I will never forget that horse because he didn't like most people but he loved me. I think he was just mad because he was cooped up most the time, his owner didn't come to ride him much. He was for sale for $5000, I wished I could buy him but couldn't afford him.

My neighbor has a QH mare who's dam was jet black (never faded) and sire was dunalino. She's grullo and I always thought she looked lighter than normal. I can get pics of her if anybody's interested.

So cute! Funny how grullas always seem to have the exact same ears.

rodeoratdogs Tue, 11/16/2010 - 09:58

That is a very cute/sweet horse, it doesn't look super light to me but it is a pretty shade of grulla, I wonder why some are super dark and some are brownish and some are really blueish, I like the blueish ones.

The ears are smiliar, whats up with that
