I'm pretty sure too, based on the news report, but just want her to verify for peace of mind.
We've a whirlpool going on in Monganui harbour (I think I spelled the name right) right now, 2nd surge, boats apparently being turned about, but no damage. And Monganui is nowhere near me.

Well, we've had Chili, New
Well, we've had Chili, New Zealand and China for earthquakes, Japan for tsunamis--that's in the past 12 to 18 months. They just showed some footage from Hawaii (love my spelling in the subject header! LOL), and there was some boats tossed around in a marina, but that was about it. They didn't say where, tho'.
Diane
Yeah that's alot I would
Yeah that's alot I would say,"THE RING OF FIRE" I just got this email from my aunt in Chile........
Alicia we are nice with alert of sunami I alive(vivacious) in the high place.
love family
That must mean they have tsunami warnings there and she's letting me know they are on high ground right?
Sorry for not getting on
Sorry for not getting on here, tried to keep a few updates on FB but been out of the house constantly. I'd been trimming up at the ranch and just got back home when I got a call from my Dad about the earthquake about a minute after it happened and ran to FB to check on my brother and family. They're mostly fine but the power and phones keep cutting out and haven't had an update since last night.
Then had to pack up, swallow a sandwich anddrive up to the north shore to move V since the ranch is in a floodplane and I can SEE waves from her paddock. There was about a 5 minute orderly wait for gas and then very little traffic, made record time. Paulo (ranch manager) offered us an empty paddock in the back to move to which was further from the stream and beach and put V and Roxy (her companion) in there. The polo horses that live on the beachside were being trailered, ridden and ponies somewhere further up the road and other owners with trailers were loaded up and moving. I didn't get hom till about 2:45 (Roxy's owner stayed the night in her truck)and the roads were apocalyptically empty. watched the news for the first two surges and passed out on the couch for 3 hours before getting a call from Debbie that V had somehow got herself cut up in the fence. All the horses were running and wild and it was pitch black so we have NO idea how she did it but the wires all around are lousy and falling down and she must've tangled both her hind legs in it (did I mention she was in heat? lol). A nasty looking but not too deep cuts on one hock and superficial scrapes all over. We tried to contact my brother this morning when the news about the reactors started but I think they still have power and phones out maybe.
It seems the news out of
It seems the news out of Japan just keeps getting worse. I saw yesterday that the 8.9 mag. quake was the fifth largest in the world since 1900...that is a long time. I know how I felt after a 6.8 quake back in '73...can't image one that strong. then to be hit by that huge tsunami is unreal...the news said it went as far as 10km inland - devastating. Now an explosion at the nuclear reactor...what more can that country take? Saying more prayers.
Good to hear that you're
Good to hear that you're okay, prayers for your brother and his family! Don't try calling, try texting. It takes less power than phone calls, works on a different wavelength or something than the voice calls, and doesn't bottleneck as badly (this I've found out since the first, and especially the second, quake here). Working on the assumption that the cell towers are still standing, there's a good chance that they don't have live power going to them, just backup batteries. Texts are less of a drain on the batteries, at least according to our telcos here.
Diane, who never EVER thought she'd be passing on 'earthquake' advice.
can't text haven't been
can't text :~ haven't been able to call either, our cell phones just say the number is not alowed :( . we've been sble to use facebook though. david's gotten stocked up on non-perishibles and water but the stores are nearly empty now. and now they are warning of a large over 7 aftershock in the next three days on top of whats going on at the nuke plant
I think it's just our phones,
I think it's just our phones, we use prepaid and they get funky sometimes. They're sleeping now but there was a big aftershoke woke them at 5 am, when they get up they have to get Yumi's pasport updated if possible, they're going to try and get out and come here, the reactor stuff is scaring my dad, he says everyone needs to get out of Tokyo now.
Yeah, news not good. The
Yeah, news not good. The Kiwi USAR leader is the same guy we had here in Christchurch, and I hope they've got full anti-radiation gear for them to wear. He's much too good at his job to lose him. (he was also the media person for the USAR effort here, and he was very professional and compassionate).
I am starting to worry about living on the Ring of Fire. It started in Chile, moved clockwise around to New Zealand and now Japan. Russia, Alaska and the PNW are next in line. Not there is any scientific basis to my statement at all, but it is worrying.
Me too MP the only thing we can do is try to be prepared, I'm going to get a months supply of food and water stocked up.
Years ago when I worked on Bainbridge Island my oldest daughter had a dream that there was a earthquake on Nov 4th, it still hasn't happened but it will sooner or later. I'm waiting to see if her date is right, those kind of dreams run in our family.
Anyway I don't work on the Island anymore atleast, I hate to get stuck there away from my family, because if we do have the big one, I have a feeling agate pass is coming down, and who knows if the ferry's will be running.
Yeah there was a scientist
Yeah there was a scientist (archaologist?) on NPR today talking about historical quakes. Most interesting was the story of a massive tsunami in a rather far inland fortress town in the same region of Japan back in the 9th c. Confirmed by a dig which found and dated the sand layer, then kept digging and found MORE sand layers, about every 1000 years give or take o.O
Then his own work on the west coast US trying to date a quake from the 1600's and the japanese historians were able to give them the exact DAY that the tsunami from that one (a 9.0 ) hit Japan. That one had a much shorter regular recurence timeframe, I forget what it was but I think it was close enough to worry ...
Of course living on a volcanic island in the middle of the ring isn't too reasuring at the moment, especially with Kilauea being cranky this month.
Oh yeah, and watch out for Fuji, it's on a 300-500 year cycle and it last erupted in 1707. and the island just moved.... :~
if anyone needs ideas for how
if anyone needs ideas for how make/what to use for a survival kit, go to http://www.survive-it.co.nz/?gclid=CO2V…. Also, www.nznature.co.nz has handy torch/radio combo thingies that are both windy-up and solar powered. Recommendation from someone that made major sense for anyone living in a quakey zone--put your survival kit in a strong container (like a metal footlocker) and then put the container in your flimsiest shed in the garden. That way, if the building comes down, you don't have to move much to get to the kit.

Always good to have a stock
Always good to have a stock pile of meds also. Most pills are still good long after the expiration dates.

You can get antibiotics labeled for fish from a pet supply company and keep them for years. Might not want to take them under normal circumstances but you never know what you might need in an emergency. Just get the human dosages off the internet and save with the meds just in case.

This stuff has everyone
This stuff has everyone pretty scared I think. My uncle is in the air force, (i cant remember if he's still a Colonel or how high he is) and he spent the weekend scaring the crud out of me. He was talking about building a bunker and planting a garden and all kinds of stuff. I think he was mostly talking about China but certainly a lot of people are on edge. I know in church we kept talking about the end times.... People are freaking out since the world just had the major floods, earthquakes, tsunamis, etc, all so close together. yikes.
A couple of my aunts and uncles are filling their propane tanks and buying tons of MRE's...
I started to ask my uncle more but he just looked at me and was like "how much do you really want to know?"
the way he said it made me want to shove my fingers in my ears and sing "lalalala i can't hear you!"
Here's the thing--I don't
Here's the thing--I don't think it is "the end of days" as such. We just have such modern technology today that we're getting the news as they actually happen, not days, weeks, or even months after the events, which was the norm even as recently as when my parents were my age. Hell, probably even more recently than that, LOL Plus, we're all more intertwined internationally than we were just a few years ago. I remember everyone being all agog by us moving overseas when I was in high school. Heck, even 10 years ago, people thought I'd be learning a foreign language to be able to get around in NZ.
So yeah, it does across as all happening at once, but in all honesty, this sort of stuff has always happened, and we either didn't hear about it because it had no bearing on our lives or it was old/passing news because it took so long to get someone there to even report it.
Diane
Yeah, that's true... got some
Yeah, that's true...
got some sad news today. Dad's been laid off, the whole plant has. They didn't give a return date....
there's a component that's used in all vehicles that is only produced one place, and that one place is in Japan, within the radiation circle....
Really sorry to hear that,
Really sorry to hear that, Krickette. I did read in one of the news articles that even though it seems we are getting "hit" a lot, the geologists say we're not actually having more earthquakes than normal. They're just hitting near populated areas, and our populated areas are expanding, so the effect seems multiplied.
I am sure Morgan is ok as it
I am sure Morgan is ok as it was very small by the time it got to Ohau, but would be nice to here from her anyways.....will check FB too.
