Quake hits NZ - hoping all our friends are safe

I just saw the news where a large quake has hit Christchurch, NZ. :o So far the news isn't good as it hit during work/school hours and many building are collapsed - large number missing. Praying :ympray: all our friends and their families are safe and well. :shock: http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20110222/ap_on_re_as/as_new_zealand_earthqua…" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I am so glad your family is okay HWT :flower , and yes it could have been a lot worse :evil: . I remember what it was like waiting to hear if my niece and her family had been found after Katrina hit, sometimes the waiting is ghastly (unfortunately, other times there is far worse to come - been there)....still praying for all those affected. :ympray:

Diane (NZapp) is ok. Without power, it seems though. I had a major panic attack when I saw the pictures as there were some buildings crumbled to the ground right where her office building is. Very sad and scary.

I thought she lived in the area. I was worried about her. Any other members near there?

It is scarey so many earthquakes lately, I'm glad NZ is ok. I have a ton of family in Chile so when they had their earthquakes it was very nearve wracking until I was able to get a hold of everyonefrown.

Thanks guys, internet is now back on, power was restored to our flat on Tuesday evening/night with internet, but somehow we lost internet again by Wednesday morning. I've been sending a text every morning to a friend in Australia to post on my facebook wall, and was hoping that FB friends would be passing on the news to other lists/forums.

All of us is good (daughter had been bussing into the office to meet me for coffee and a bite when the quake hit, and I had no idea where hubby was), but he did get my texts that the lawyer and I were walking up one street, and then along another, so he was able to find us and drive us the rest of the way to the flat, where my daughter was sitting (she got my last text to her saying to head to the flat)

MP, I don't remember if you recall the old stone buildings across from the courthouse, the Provincial Chambers, those are down at least partially, as is the Methodist Church (across the other street from the courthouse)--that had 3 guys dead or dying when we walked past there to get out of town :-(.

My car is still stuck in the CBD, lawyer's is stuck farther down past the Provincial Chambers, and I've lost at least 3 kilos since Tuesday. Horses are fine, altho' Bubba apparently does not want to be "Big Man on Campus" anymore--he stuck to Len's shoulder like a burr when Len went to get our big water container to bring water to our neighbours in town.

I actually pulled up my pics from our tour around Chch to try and piece together where all the down buildings were. So scary that it was right near you!

Oh, Diane, I was starting to panic when we didn't hear from you....Thank God you are okay.

We had our own issues yesterday when my daughter's house burnt down. They all are save, she was at work, kids in school, Chihuahua, TJ, ran off to neighbors hours before fire, and s-i-l was on the road - in Chicago. At first they thought they'd lost everything, but it looks like a lot can be salvaged (just a matter of de-smoking them).

Too much going on! Thank the gods your daughter and everyone else weren't home.

MP, the Anglican Cathedral--the big one in the square--is to be rebuilt just as it was, looks-wise. They're saying roughly 30% of the city will need to be pulled down. Now there's problems in Sumner/Redcliffs due to landslippage problems.

Glad you are safe! We were in Illinois when the news came on, but it was a day late so your phone was down when I tried to call/text. Got a hold of Countercanter who got a hold of Monster Pony who let us know you were ok. What a relief!

Yeah, phone lines were down, cell phone network bogged. I was actually getting texts from Australia faster than ones from NZ. All I can say is thank the gods for Facebook, cuz that's how I kept word going that I and mine were all okay--called it the morning roll call. LOL
