Oops...

So I was trying to train Boss today and I figured I would take him to Smokey's make shift training pen since it is alot bigger and grassy than our round pen; I was just going to saddle him and let him sit for a few hours and eat grass and just get used to it again since the last time he had a saddle was in the fall. Anyway, he took the saddle okay, and as soon as I went and picked up the lunge whip, he ran over to the make-shift gate and stuck his head under it and lifted the gate off the ground and took off running and bucking. Best part was the saddle never slipped! so I hope he learned that even if he runs away from it, its not coming off. I attached a picture of the make-shift gate thingy. It is basically a gate that is leaned against a metal water tank and tied to it with string and then a mostly rotten board is put between the gate and our old garden fence. Yikes, it dosn't so great now that I think about it but it worked fine on Smokey since he is trained alot better and knows his boundaries.

Yea, I really didn't think he would try to go under something that was chest level on him, but it was my fault for underestimating him since he was rather nervous at the time.
I'm hoping to get him trained this year, but he is still going to be really hard to sell.

Oh and that picture is Smokey of course, was just to show the makeshift gate.

Yea, he was really quick to run off, but he was scared. Bad thing is he is a big boy, taller than me but I'm only 5'2 so we can't have him trying to do that every time.

Houdini - the sequel!

I once came out to the barn to find a stall door laying flat and Cyn out. My installation instructions (and my common sense) failed to mention that the....well how the heck do I splain? I'd made it to where he could lift the door up off the hinges (solid 4x4 door btw) instead of turning the top hinge down on top? I assume his hooves got up under and he pushed it upward somhow? I know that's as clear as mud, but....that will keep the gate from moving, but if it's open with slats? the horse would remain there until he figgered it out.
