ooh, possible outside mare booking, nervous!

I don't even advertise Cory at stud but people have started asking and I don't know why but it makes me so nervous to think of taking someone's money and breeding their mare. I think I worry that if the foal doesn't turn out to their liking... I don't know... they'll be mad at me or think Cory is a bad stallion or something and I KNOW that's silly because sometimes certain crosses just don't work through no fault of either sire or dam. So anyway, some people have kind of poked around at the idea but I don't really talk it up so it usually doesn't go anywhere. I'm a terrible marketer, I know. I'll get better. But right now a friend and colleague of mine is very interested in booking her Swedish mare to him and that makes me even MORE nervous because she is so big and Solo isn't old enough yet for me to be able to judge how nice Cory's offspring out of warmblood mares turn out. What if my friend gets a warmblood back and head set on a pony neck and legs? So humor me, or tell me not to risk it and I should recommend a different stallion for her mare, or something. I honestly don't know. I asked her and didn't really get a straight answer. I was clear with her that the foal will likely not be a pony. I think she just adores the mare and as she's getting older she wants a baby out of her. One thing she did mention is that she wants something saner than the mare (the mare is apparently very hot) so maybe she wants to ride it herself.

rabbitsfizz Wed, 03/31/2010 - 13:27

I don't actually think it will be a particularly good cross, she is just going to get a slightly smaller version of the mare, hopefully with a slightly prettier head.
The mare looks like a huge pony, in order to get the best cross you do need something a lot, (LOT) finer than the stallion, in pony breeding.
Of course, if a 15.00 hh, 15.2hh version of the mare is what she dreams of, off you go!

I have no idea...
I've seen on other boards when people ask if XX cross would be good with XX stallion, everyone's first answer is to post conformation shots of the mare and stallion to see how well they'd match up regarding strenths and weaknesses.
I'm not sure how important that is since it's a crap shoot anyway that the good traits of each get passed to the foal or if you wind up with a train wreck.
So I would say measure up both their weaknesses and think if the foal ends up with every one of them, would the cross still be considered a good result. Since you say Cory throws copies of the mare, make sure the mare owner is happy with that!

Good luck with whatever you decide!

Well feel free to slap me with a wet noodle but I really like the mare. Alot. She does remind me of Rosalynn too. I think Cory could refine her a bit, clean up her jump a bit (although it's a fine jump for a jumper/eventer IMO), bring her down in size (and maybe heft) some. Yeah... I think it would work. Normally I'd like to see a confo shot of the mare but I can already tell I like her, she's got ability, and she's sound... sometimes things such as those overrule minor conformation nit picking.

My experience is that it takes a seriously potent stallion to affect a mare's influence....even line-bred stallions only get a leg up in the influence. I'd bet on the get looking like the mare with a smaller everything.

I don't have much experiance, but so far Jazz is just Mist with spots. And a much bigger :booty

accphotography Wed, 03/31/2010 - 20:30

Do we have reason to believe Cory is not potent? I've seen alot of really nice horses out of some pretty cruddy mares thanks to nice stallions. The mare is important, but they're not everything, otherwise we could breed a mare to anything.

Well now I have not heard from the lady all day so maybe I jinxed it by mentioning it to you guys and she changed her mind. ;)

Either way Cory needs to take a trip to Honahlee (http://www.honahleevet.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;) to get trained to the phantom. I may get Ginny to stand if I'm really careful but there is NO way Phoebe will ever allow herself to be bred, especially not to a despicable pony.

*slaps ACC with a wet noodle* :rofl
It was just too good a chance to miss, so, sorry about that!!!

Of course, I do not like the mare, she has far too many small faults to even consider breeding from her, from my perspective, and she just looks like a big pony, to me. I completely accept that she may well do her job excellently, and is a lovely mare to own and ride, no problem with that, and she looks as if she could hunt all day carrying weight, too, so, as far as I can see, breeding her to a little pony, no matter how good, is just going to result in a smaller version of herself.
As I said, if that is what the owner wants, brilliant!
Cory will tidy her up a bit, do nothing about her plain head and short neck (well, actually the head is negotiable, Cory has a nice head) He will give her a better shoulder, but, as she is short and thick necked, this will not help her ability to extend, and Cory really can extend!
Personally, I would not breed this mare at all, especially since her breeding is guessed at but unknown. I would keep her doing what she does well, ie being ridden, and I would buy a youngster to bring on.
A lot cheaper and fewer risks.

Of course I will agree with all your nice comments about Cory and disagree with your criticisms of the mare, just because I can. Actually, no, I see that she has a short neck but other than that I can't really judge her from these photos other than to say *I* think she is attractive and looks useful. I've seen her go on occasion but didn't really pay attention because of course at the time I had no reason to. She is shown in hunters, jumpers, and medals. She is totally the kind of mare I would use in my own breeding program, papers or no. If she had no papers and was a train wreck that would be another story... luckily I have not had anyone express interest in a breeding to a poor quality mare.

I heard from the owner this morning. She is still very interested so I'll be moving forward with sending Cory to Honahlee!

TwinCreeksFarm Thu, 04/01/2010 - 12:05

Good luck!
I agree that the mare looks like a giant pony with a short neck, so I think you will get a small horse sized pony... other than that I have not a clue! But you're right, I can't tell anything else from the pictures. :? If the owner wants it for herself to keep, then let it be!

rabbitsfizz Fri, 04/02/2010 - 12:21

I'm sorry, I thought you had seen her in person??
Mind you, I do think that if anyone sends less than flattering pictures of their horses in order to represent them they are nuts, but maybe that is just me?? :rofl

accphotography Fri, 04/02/2010 - 12:26

Oh I personally don't think they're less than flattering, I just think they're terrible to judge conformation from. But maybe you see some less than flattering things about her that I don't. I see an uphill mover with nice collection, a cute jump and a kind, expressive eye. That's about all I'm willing to judge based on those.

This is exactly what I've seen in person which is the right kind of horse for the job she is doing. :) I'll see her again in person later this month at a show and can scrutinize her more carefully then, but I don't remember anything alarming.
