Ok...my question is...

Why is this accepted in the halter industry?? I won't name the horse & I cut off the head. [img]http://i209.photobucket.com/albums/bb252/KountryGirlKreationz/Horses/Ug…] IMO this is the ugliest example of a halter horse. Its so freaky & unnatural looking. Why would someone want their horse to look like that? I just don't understand. I like to see a nice well rounded, muscular hip not something like in these pics! But seeing more & more of this "hanging" hip. I did draw a plumb line & it no where near lines up. Isn't the halter horse supposed to be an ideal example? which IMO is FAR from it. Can anyone help me understand WHY??

Fledgesflight Mon, 04/13/2009 - 01:10

I don't like the look either (reminds me of a loaded soggy nappy falling off/down lol)- but if that's what the judges are pinning then that's what will keep getting bred amongst other faults.

Dilutes Mon, 04/13/2009 - 02:08

Oh I soooo agree with you! It's ugly as and so unnatural looking :hammer
I can't see how they pass up a horse that has the conformation to go and do a days work over these halter horses that are extremely post legged, pencil legs and tiny hooves. I just don't get it :x

PamelaTX Mon, 04/13/2009 - 02:20

Sadly no its not photoshopped at all. Its a real horse.
I'm seeing more & more hips like that...which is down right repulsive to me.
I don't understand how that is accepted.

:laugh1 it does kinda look like that pig!!

accphotography Mon, 04/13/2009 - 04:02

Yes, the "hanging hip" is the new buzz phrase and type in the halter industry. IME these horses are not capable of doing much more than stand in a ring. Interestingly many of their owners will admit that too. The vast majority are Impressive bred if not also HyPP, which their owners and breeders intentionally aim for. It's an industry unto itself and one I shall never understand.

I'd love to see the actual bone structure of that horse.

RiddleMeThis Mon, 04/13/2009 - 04:14

That is probably the ugliest thing I have ever seen in my entire like. And Im not joking. Id rather every color breeder bred nothing but crooked legged foal than breed that. At least the crooked legged foals would be pretty.

dakotakdq Mon, 04/13/2009 - 04:32

OMG I hate halter horses!!! that pic os why!! what do ppl think breeding horses like that! then they get upset when they dont ride :o

bolana Mon, 04/13/2009 - 05:15

 that is just horrid, it looks like it has deformed butt! Why would you ever want to breed something that looks like that! :hammer

lipigirl Mon, 04/13/2009 - 07:51

Sorry but this is one of the reasons that I don't like AQH, and yes I know NOW that they don't ALL look that, but if you are not in the know and the only ones you see advertised either look like Arnie on steriods or postlegged then it does tarnish your view of them.

Dilutes Mon, 04/13/2009 - 08:32

"look like Arnie on steriods or postlegged"

:laugh1 Well I might not be fond of this look either but I've had some giggles with this thread

Paintlover Mon, 04/13/2009 - 10:08

That is why I have never understood halter horses at all. They should be the best examples of their breed but that isn't true anymore( at least not of the breeds I am familiar with). They are whatever "they", (whoever "they" may be), want to see in a horse. Why in the world "they" would want to see that I have no idea?? What is even sadder is seeing 6 month old foals that all ready look like that for the show ring. :sad It is so unnatural. I bet we start seeing more and more halter horses with physical problems.

Not to get to far off topic but this why I know of Border Collie breeders that stay away from AKC. Because AKC's ideal Border Collie conformation isn't what is best for herding which is what they are bred to do. This is why you see the majority of AKC registered BC's to be in agility rather then herding. Which they are great at as well don't get me wrong. I just don't get why we are breeding what is natural out of horses and dogs. :( :?

Me, I love a good well built muscular horse. But a working horse. IMO they are closer to "ideal" and they should be the ones out there being judged.

Hey! You've just described my pig! :booty

Check out these similarities:
[img]http://i209.photobucket.com/albums/bb25…]
[img]http://www.dkimages.com/discover/DKIMAG…]
[img]http://home.blarg.net/~wayule/graphics/…]

An awful awful thought...but does anyone notice that 2 out of these 3 livestock photos are animals bred for meat-production? ...and see the similarities between all three?

Paintlover Mon, 04/13/2009 - 11:26

Heidi, Yep!!! I see that!! It is terrible!!! In fact I was at a farm once where the owner used the term "fattening up" for her halter horse. He was kept in a small area as well. :sad Makes no sense whatsoever.

Andrea Mon, 04/13/2009 - 11:59

That is just bizzare! It looks like a granny butt... Is that really what the AQHA is going for in their halter horses or is this a fluke? Is this a numerous champion or someone who got lucky that no one else entered the class?
I'll have to go searching now, cause it is unfathomable that judges like this look.

Andrea Mon, 04/13/2009 - 12:27

I went searching for more pictures that show butts on halter horses... Can't find any real side shots. Most show angles that hide that view... Conspiracy?

I actually went back and looked at Frodo's butt. Whew! He's got a nice tight hiney! :booty

PamelaTX Mon, 04/13/2009 - 13:17

Is that bull for real?? dayum!!!!!

There are more out there. I'm off to work now but when I get home I'll search for some more & post.
The funny thing is that most that I see like this are HYPP N/N...odd isn't it?

Heidi Mon, 04/13/2009 - 14:04

Holy Carp that bull is huge!
Yeah, I've seen them before, but I think it was in a video, and recently... The bulls in the video I watched were a pale cream color, but just as muscled. I *think* the video was a production of a genetic lab and they were studying the phenomenon and trying to determine if there were uses from that genetic anomaly (myostatin) to help people with medical problems.
I want to say I ran across it at my Crohn's Disease forum, but I'm not sure.

I chose the photo I used only because it showed all R-side views, just like the horse and the pig. I wanted to highlight the similarities.

Here is a link about a Whippet who has a genetic mutation of the myostatin gene.

Ok, that Bull is disgusting!!!! :ymsick: I am not sure I have ever seen anything more horrific in my life!!

ETA: No offense to anyone who may raise cattle.

Andrea Mon, 04/13/2009 - 15:04

So do those bulls taste the same as animals that don't have the disease? I'm not sure I'd want to eat something that looked like that when it was alive :o
The whippet is bizare looking as well.

Paintlover Mon, 04/13/2009 - 16:40

Thanks, RMT. Still that is pretty gross. They can barely move they are so huge!!

equus Mon, 04/13/2009 - 17:59

I just wanted to point out that any horse that is N/N is Impressive bred. The HyPP condition was traced directly back to Impressive, so of course any N/N she finds will have Impressive. =)

On the other hand, I have seen N/N Impressive-bred horses that don't look like hippos on toothpicks. I will have to grab a picture of one sometime.

Actually this is not correct. Thoroughbreds are all N/N for instance, but not one of them is Impressive bred.

Monsterpony Mon, 04/13/2009 - 18:50

H/H is the terminology for a homozygous HyPP horse. H/N is heterozygous and N/N is homozygous non-HyPP. All horses that are not lined to Impressive (which is almost every horse on earth) are N/N. All horses that are H/H are at least double-lined to Impressive.

PamelaTX Mon, 04/13/2009 - 19:49

OMG!!!! Those bulls are hideous!!! They do remind me of those horses with the "hanging" hips.
That poor dog!!
I just can't believe those are for real!!

The thing is most are N/N but are so inbred with Impressive or his kids...such as Conclusive, Kid Clu & so on. I think that has somethin to do with it.
Thats another thing, why do so many breed halter horses to so closely related other horses??
I mean so many are so inbred its sickening!!!

Edited to add...those bulls remind me of Kids Classic Style...OMG he's so huge he waddles when he moves.
His previous owners had a video of him on their website & honestly he waddled when he moved....they say he's 1800 lbs.
No QH was ever meant to be that big!!
