wow what a lovley foal! Cant go past a grulla either :)

critterkeeper Wed, 11/04/2009 - 20:45

Yea, you can simply overlook a field full of chestnuts, but let that same field be full of grullas and you will have people stopping just to stare (and I am at the head of the line - lol). :love :bounce

TheSwingHorse Fri, 11/06/2009 - 10:14

She may consider keeping him a stud depending on his attitude and how he performs in the show ring. I want her to test him to see if he is EE or not. What else would you recommend based on his pedigree and parents? I know little about stock horse lines. :(

critterkeeper Fri, 11/06/2009 - 14:04

Well, I think I try the dun zygosity test (is he D/D or D/n...?) - oh and it never hurts to check for agouti (just in case).

TheSwingHorse Fri, 11/06/2009 - 19:48

What about any white markings or cream (based on pedigrees and possible smokey blacks)?

accphotography Fri, 11/06/2009 - 20:05

Only thing I would test for is extension. Mayyyyybe for agouti. I see no reason to suspect any patterns or cream and we know he's heterozygous dun.

accphotography Fri, 11/06/2009 - 23:43

Ooops, I apologize. My brain must not have been with me when I said that. I am 100% confident he's not tobiano, the sabino test is worthless and there is no test for splash. Sooo, the only pattern you could test for that he could actually have is frame... and I would test for that. *nods*

The babies are here!

They arrived at midnight on the 9th. They are SO fuzzy. I feel so bad, they came from Oregon where it was freezing before they left and snowing really bad. Now they are here in Cali and its been in the 70s all week. They are already shedding out.

Here are some new pictures.

Shortly before arriving:

Some babies look so lovely when they have their winter woolies! I just watched the video of the two stallions together.. what a great thing for them to have a friend!!

Here are some new pics of Steel, the colt. They were taken on Friday afternoon. We let him out to run around with Crystal's gelding, Montana before dinner time.

Poor Steel has to go in for surgery tomorrow morning. It turns out the "cold" he had wasn't a lingering cold at all. He had a mild cold back in Jan. Lots of coughing and sneezing. He got a little better but still had a lingering cough and his nose was always running. We had numerous vet appointments are he was either diagnosed as having a cold or hay allergies. We discussed what was going on with our vet that handles all of our andalusians and she mentioned a potential cleft palate since his food was coming out his nose. We contacted the breeder to find out if he'd had milk coming out his nose as a little foal and she said no. We took him to Dr. Wan in Norco and he scoped him. Sure enough, poor Steelie has a cleft palate. Luckily it is in the soft palate and in a very accessible spot. He is going to try to do it arthroscopically instead of the invasive procedure. The success rate is very low but we have to try...

So anyway... here are the pics from Friday.

Just wanted to update everyone. Steel went in for his pre-op yesterday and went into surgery at 2 today. They tried to do it arthroscopically but it was taking too long so they opted to break his jaw and go in that way. They fixed the palate and they are closing him up now. The vet assistant said they'd call when he's up. He will definitely be staying the night tonight. Now we just have to hope he heals successfully (the hard part). Thanks for the support guys. We haven't eaten all day... we are too nervous. Siiiigh...
