let the VENTING and RANTING begin

i had a crappy day! actually, i had a great day, but a crappy 10 minutes and my brain is completely focused on it. Some of you have seen pics of my grey mare, stormy. i lent her to a relative to be a companion to their young horse and when i moved in December i told them i won't be able to come see her as often (obviously) and to let me know if they have any problems. today i got a call from them saying stormy is "lame again" and what would i like them to do. Now this mare had NEVER taken a lame step on me but apparently has been off and on lame for at least the last 4 weeks during which time NO ONE thought they should tell ME, THE HORSES OWNER!!! so, thanks to a really GOOD friend she will be coming home, but i dunno what kind of injury i am looking at and what, if anything can be done about it now that she has been lame for so long. they said they thought originally she had hurt herself running in the field, so i am thinking maybe suspensory, but of course i won't know till i get her here and the vet out...UGH!!! I AM MISERABLE! the thought of miss sassy sitting out there hurting just about makes me want to vomit....and smack someone. :hammer :hammer :hammer :hammer :hammer :hammer :hammer :hammer :hammer :hammer :hammer :hammer :hammer :hammer :hammer :hammer

so, the vet blocked her from the fetlock down and she started walking on it almost normally after about 10 minutes. Vet thinks either its a deep abscess or a fracture of her P3. we are poulticing until Monday and if she doesn't pop an abscess we will x-ray and go from there. She is on full stall rest until we see something definite. Vet tried hoof testers, but Stormy has thin soft soles on all her feet which made it difficult.

tonight i soaked her foot and discovered she has bruising coming down from her coronary band on both inside and outside quarters of that hoof wall. I've never seen that before, so if anyone has any ideas, would love to hear! will be calling the vet again tomorrow to talk about it because her feet were a bit dirty and i didn't even notice till they were clean.

she was so happy when the block was working, i felt even worse when it wore off. She wont eat our grain because she has never had this type before so i had to syringe it in her mouth so of course she bit my finger and i almost lost my finger from the first knuckle down! YIKES! I missed that sassy mare!

sounds like an abscess to me too...hoping that is all it is. I remember seeing my first horse with abscess...the owner and I both thought she had broken her leg(mind you, it was 6am and we were going out to feed the horses...was at the boy scout camp we worked at)...after calming down a hyperventilating owner(one of my wranglers), we pulled her out and checked her over and I called the vet and farrier....tinnnnnnny little crack in the sole caused it...i mean TINY. Barely there...amazing how something that small can lame up a horse that quick!

updating! i have been giving her large quantities of bute and she is using the foot a bit more. still waiting for an abscess to blow out, but i MIGHT see a hole in her frog! i'm too afraid to cut away at it just in case it isn't and i make her more sore so i put a poultice pad over the whole sole and up the bulbs of her heel and i am hoping to find some evidence of an infection coming out this afternoon when i take it off. I know in when i have dealt with abscesses before the horse get a lot more sound once the abscess finds a way out, which i haven't seen yet.....x-rays monday if we don't get anything out of there...i am dreading monday! really really really don't want monday to come.....really really. well, actually, i think i would find out results of x-ray on Tuesday...so lets HATE Tuesday. unless she finds the abscess on Tuesday....then Tuesday would be a good day cause i can get my farrier to come dig it out with x-rays for reference....if she finds anything ELSE, Tuesday will SUCK! OMG i need to stop thinking about Tuesday :(

fingers crossed.

:bounce Yippie for the absess (Isn't it odd what we actually are happy about when it comes to horse health?). And yes, it does look like something could be coming through, you should know more by Monday...sending happy thoughts and prayers for a full recovery.

oops, didn't update this. she has 6 holes in her foot. 2 sub-solar, 2 coronary and one in each heel bulb. right now she is 100% sound, but one heel is still draining and i put her on anti-biotics. she is outside because i couldn't keep her in anymore LOL. she loves to be outside running around and was just screaming in her stall to get out. i am so glad this is almost over and thankful for all the great advice I've gotten from everyone!

the great thing about it being just abscesses....she'll heal up nice and quick! Amazing how they can go from dead lame to near sound in just days with one(or more) of them suckers.
