Leopard?

Am I right in thinking we never found a photo of a TRUE full leopard for the gallery?

Oh, let me ask someone...she foaled out a full leopard a few weeks ago, and let me tell you, he's got nothing but Lp and Lp-white! Big honking spots from nose to toes.

There is one in the gallery that is tagged as a leopard but I'm thinking its probably a false leopard. There are a couple of false leopards that are tagged as such. A true leopard, especially a foal photo would be awesome.

accphotography Mon, 05/31/2010 - 21:04

I don't have a foal photo, but I recently located a 100% true leopard and may be able to get a photo of him (it will be grazing as he's just in a field near my house) that shows the lack of roaning out the false leopards get.

Aww, awesome! I like leopards. We almost got one when I was a kid, I remember going out to look at him a couple of times. He was really cool but mom couldn't get over the whole Appy thing... We missed out on some cool horses that way, lol. There were several that she wouldnt even go look at cause they were cremello or perlino lol. she thinks they are ugly.

accphotography Tue, 06/01/2010 - 14:39

Hubby thinks DDs are ugly too... they remind him of lab mice.

Jenks Tue, 06/01/2010 - 15:08

Heh! Funny - you got him OK with GG though!

So what's a false/fake leopard?

accphotography Tue, 06/01/2010 - 15:16

I've taken him to see several DD stallions and he cringed with all of them. I think he cringed less with GG because: 1) he knew he was a good stallion prior to even seeing him (and thus a privilege to breed to him), 2) he got to handle GG himself and he was really impressed with him overall 3) GG's skin and eyes are darker than the average DD, 4) he knew I really wanted to breed to him, 5) (and this one was MANDATORY) he KNEW the baby wouldn't look like that. :rofl :rofl

So is that a false leopard because it has the grey/silver shading?

what about the guy here...hard to see his face in that picture due to fly mask...but he didn't have any dark skin except under his spots when we bathed him..I don't recall him having a visible facial marking either.

Id really love to have a leopard mare but you know that we are moving house ?well we have a 20,000 euro bill to pay out ( stamp duty and solicitors fees ...what a rip off :-x )

Monsterpony Tue, 06/01/2010 - 22:20

Isn't that 'dripping' effect on the spots an indication of grey?

RiddleMeThis Tue, 06/01/2010 - 23:23
he KNEW the baby wouldn't look like that. :rofl :rofl
Unless its max white :angle :angle :booty :booty

accphotography Tue, 06/01/2010 - 23:25

:rofl :rofl With GG's suppression level? I'll be lucky if I get any white at all!

Jenks Wed, 06/02/2010 - 07:44
Between that and the BLACK black color of the spots (and the appearance of the dam), yup I'd say gray.

Here is her twin (literal twin):

OMG - I'd be tempted to name this one Alex Delarge~ If only that eye would stay that way!

You have to keep in mind that the Patn1 gene does not always express as a full leopard (nose-to-toes). It has different levels of expression, from minimum to maximum, just as the "Paint" patterns do. It varies from about 60% white to 100% white, but I've seen horses with much less white than that which I suspect are minimal leopards. So just because a horse is considered a "false leopard" doesn't mean it doesn't have Patn1. I've seen many many MANY of those roaned-out-to-be-leopards produce full leopards (by non-leopards), so they obviously do have the Patn1 gene.

Personally, I don't ever use the term "false leopard". That would be like calling a horse a "false splash" because it has white face and leg markings only, with no body white. The genetics are still there.

By the way, it's quite normal for a true leopard or fewspot to have black skin on its forehand, and a "blanket" of pink skin on its hips. It's very obvious on my fewspot gelding when I give him a bath!

supaspot60 Sat, 06/05/2010 - 19:05

pablo Sat, 06/05/2010 - 19:20

Yes I noticed his mane and tail had whitened alot in the 2nd pic !!He's a 4yr old now ,so it has taken 4yrs to whiten completely !!So was he or is he what you call
