Learning to Jump

Ancient Oaks sent me photos of a stallion they bred, AO Breeze, who is learning to jump. Although she used to compete, his owner can no longer jump due to an old injury. Recently, a young trainer at her barn asked to try Breeze over some fences. He did well, so yesterday, his owner took him to Arapahoe Riding Club, run by Wilson Dennehy, a successful H/J trainer. He liked him enough to keep him on for the next 10 days. Breeze was introduced to new tack, bit, rider, arena and this is his fourth time over fences. I'm no H/J person, but I love to watch the events. I think he looks WONDERFUL :angel with very nice form. SARA - where are you?

Jenks Sat, 05/01/2010 - 18:44

Woo. I am new to sport horse, but...that's not hard to see I don't think.... Cyn has started over real low poles, but he jumps them.. really exciting. What are they thinking of doing with AOB now that they are retiring? He really looks good!

Maigray Sat, 05/01/2010 - 20:09

Oh, he went to his new amateur owner last year. She has done almost all of his under saddle work, but she is the one with the old injury who cannot jump. She is actively promoting him in main ring and sporthorse venues and his under saddle debut was slated for this year. This is a slight detour :D

Maigray Sat, 05/01/2010 - 20:17

I think his debut was supposed to be in sporthorse under saddle, but I beyond that I do not know. Considering she has competed him in halter in both arenas, I would not be surprised if she does the same thing with him under saddle as well.

Maigray Sat, 05/01/2010 - 21:08

Okay, I just looked at his website and it says she will also compete him hunter pleasure.

lillith Sun, 05/02/2010 - 09:33

He does look nice but am I the only person who winced at that picture...hat?

Don't get me wrong, he is a lovely looking horse but I wouldn't ride without a hat let alone jump and it always makes me shiver.

Maigray Sun, 05/02/2010 - 15:01

You're not the only one. The owner said she was scared as well and warned her this horse was green, but she said the rider didn't even bat an eye. This was a tryout ride, so I'm assuming this was the trainer's rider and she is probably blase about taking a new horse around what she considers baby jumps.

NZ Appaloosas Sun, 05/02/2010 - 20:47

it isn't the size of the jump that kills, it's what the head hits as the person falls off....

Jumping-wise, I think the boy's got talent. It's obvious he's a bit green (overjumping, for one), and he's a bit 'distracted' looking in the one photo, but he seems to know where to put his feet, which is a major telling point! LOL Hard to see if he's rounding up into a bascule, but he's not looking flat-backed either.

Yep, baby jumps. :) He's cute, does not jump like a hunter but he looks athletic and careful!

I only wear a helmet when I feel I need it which I know means that I will fall when I don't have one but that's my choice. I make my students ride with helmets because if I didn't, I would feel responsible for any head injuries.

NZ Appaloosas Mon, 05/03/2010 - 20:20

My very first fall off a horse came when I was jumping--wasn't an intentional jump, the sh*tland I was riding kicked out at a horse we were passing, and when I pulled her to the left, I inadvertently put us to a jump. Needless to say, I was totally unprepared, came off and ended up getting my brand-new helmet dirty. After that, I never rode without a helmet. nearly 44 years of helmet wearing! I guess I got a serious case of "helmet hair" :rofl :rofl

Looks nice! Very interested and attentive.

I wear a helmet 99% of the time, and anyone who rides her does so 100%.. I don't care how old you are! The only time I don't is when I'm hopping on a lesson horse to demonstrate something or riding bareback for a few minutes in the ring and don't feel like grabbing it. Except, for the one time, when I rode bareback for a few minutes.. and happened to get lured into the 3' jump course that was already set up.. :sign

You guys know i broke my neck riding, always wear a hat - PLEASE !!!!!

As to the Arabian, he looks like he likes it. My only experience of jumping an Arab was my first horse a 14hh Chestnut Arab mare with a white blaze called Kerry Gold who cat-jumped everything - nearly put me off altogether !!!

Okie dokie, AK Morgan (he and his wife Deb Morgan are the breeders) went up to see Breeze recently and watch him work over jumps. His owner is doing an internship, I think, and Breeze has not been really worked in about 2 months. But - I thought this was super interesting - the owner's fiance, who is a complete beginner, apparently rides Breeze himself. I was really surprised.

Anyway, AK was thrilled with his progress, says the rider Wilson has on him is fabulous. Just some background; AK Morgan and Wilson Dennehy (the trainer) are old friends. They knew each other 30 years ago, worked horses together, and met up again at the Arabian Sporthorse Nationals last year. Wilson was one of the over fences judges. That is why Wilson agreed to look at Breeze.

Wilson now has Breeze taking 3'3 and 3'6 courses. He is very pleased and says he is even developing some hunter form. He told AK to come back for a Sept. 9th open show. Breeze is also being aimed at the Sporthorse Nationals in jumping for 2010.

Only one pic..Sorry!

AO Breeze went to his first show this weekend at the Colorado Horse Park. He competed in open jumpers in the 3'3" and 3'6" division. His owner videotaped his go yesterday on the 3'6" course. By all accounts, he did quite well. Coming into the show, he had only 35 days of professional training over a 9 month period, and he had not been ridden for most of the summer. He had only about 20 rides over fences with this rider.

Wilson Dennehy apparently told them that in all his years in the business (around 60?) he had never take a horse so green into a Class A show. Adrian, his apprentice rider, said he was relaxed, walked around on a loose rein, was completely confident. He had no hesitations or refusals. She told the owner she rode him "loose" in first class (3'3"), and he knocked a couple rails due to her approach, and in the 3'6" class he was tired and had a couple rails down there too.

The next day (videotaped), to save him a little, they took him only in the 3'6" class. Approaching the in-and-out, Wilson thought he could not make the striding for the bigger horses, so Adrian tried to pop in an extra one, and he took down a rail. Next time they'll let him take the striding normally.

They were apparently "stunned" at how well he went. He was the smallest, greenest, least conditioned horse out there, and the only Arabian. He got a lot of attention from other people and lots of questions and compliments. His owners/breeders are thrilled with him, his rider loves him, and his trainer is excited for him.

I know nothing about jumping, but he looks like he's flying! Neat that he's doing well!

Maigray Fri, 09/17/2010 - 09:38

Okay, here is the full video his owner made after the show was done. The third day he apparently had a struggle through one class - a particular in-and-out was difficult for him. The next day they dropped him to the .90 class and he went clear and made the jump off. His rider pushed him for some speed, and he had a couple rails down there. But everyone is still super pleased with how he went. Someone aptly said he was "a freak of nature" to be taking 3'6" classes and schooling over 4' after 2 weeks of training. That just isn't done. With some experience and conditioning, he should be a knockout.

He certainly seems very talented and is also very handsome. Aren't they worried that all this sudden jumping without much training may damage him even at his age ?

Can someone advise her there is a problem with the photo gallery if you use Firefox? So many people use it that she might want to address that.

Daylene Alford Mon, 09/20/2010 - 09:07

PM me or email me about the about the problem Jenks so we don't hijack the thread please.
