I have both a regular Kindle and the Kindle Fire and I love them both! They each have their good points, too. When I got the Kindle Fire I got a free month of Amazon Prime, but then again my husband already has it so it didn't change anything. I love the free books and if you use Amazon enough there are plenty of perks.

I don't think you get the Amazon Prime trial with the regular kindle? I'm not 100% sure, though.
CM - a Kindle Fire is what'd you want if you wanted a "cheap iPad" since the regular Kindle is just black and white and doesn't have the apps and stuff. Just books and stuff like that.
We've had a couple iPads and they're fun for a couple months, but then they get boring. Kind of like a cross between a cell phone and a laptop, except you can't call people and there's no separate keyboard. And it's smallish.
They both have internet, thought, but only the Fire has the normal browser, like a computer.

I had a demonstration of something- honestly I am a self confessed dinosaur- and it did just about everything except go and make you a cup of coffee- but it was oh so expensive. I cannot afford £400.00 for something and you should have seen his face when I asked what would happen if I dropped it!!
I had this mental picture of my walking around with it and then seeing a mare foaling- some people live in another world, I guess.
I am looking to get a laptop with a dongle, so I can have internet in the caravan when I am foaling, but I like the feel of books. Yes they are a nuisance when you have your spare room stuffed full of bags of the things, but some I will read again and again.
How much is the average download for, say, the newest Stephen King, and do you just loan it or is it there forever?
The Kindle may suit you,
The Kindle may suit you, Rabbit, as it is about the size of a large paperback, lighter, very simple, and has no backlight to hurt your eyes. I've found the Kindle edition of most brand new hardbacks to be about $15.00 at most. But the real value of the device is that you can download what you want whenever you want it. A couple of clicks and the book is there. It doesn't matter if you're traveling, out in the caravan, or home in bed, the book can be there in seconds.

Well I'm not sure if it's your kind of read but this is my husband's recently released book - The Forgotten Land. It can be bought through quite a lot of sites for your Kindle (or other E book reader) such as Amazon or you can buy it in paperback.

"An Australian SAS patrol find themselves in 10th century Viking Denmark!
Description
Heavily armed Kurdish militants, trained and led by highly motivated Kurdish Peshmerga Forces, are tearing Iraq apart. The U.N. mobilise forces to stabilise the teetering country.
In the cover of darkness a small Australian Special Air Service Regiment (SASR) patrol travel deep behind enemy lines to seek out and capture an enemy General who has gone into hiding.
The SASR patrol accidentally trigger a time portal and are thrown back into another time, another place. They find themselves in a land where warriors fight and die by the sword.
They find themselves in 10th Century Viking Denmark!
What now? How will they find their way back? Will the people of that long forgotten land help them...or kill them?"
