Is it a beached Whale, Is it a Charolais..(opinons on udder)

............No its a very Preggy Slaney   I took the camera outside today and Slaney was dozing and stood in a very stretched pose (maybe it was more comfortable) This is Slaney at 307 days. Her bump is dropping although her bag is still the same no major movement in it yet. Her manner though has mellowed which is what happens to her on the run up to foaling. Slaney will be having her makeover this week. She will be having a general tidy up and belly clip as she has so much fluffy hair and molting like crazy that all any foal would get is a mouthfull of hair. [img]http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t35/Minimad1/Miniature%20Horses/Mini…] [img]http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t35/Minimad1/Miniature%20Horses/Mini…] And not forgetting Rosie - this picture doesnt show how big she has gotten (still dont know if there is a foal though  ). She had been laid down so coverd in hay. Ignore the feet (farrier coming tomorrow) [img]http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t35/Minimad1/Miniature%20Horses/Mini…] And finally the two clipped ladies Shimmer and Ruby [img]http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t35/Minimad1/Miniature%20Horses/Mini…] I decided to give Slaney her maternity clip today as it was so nice and I think we are in for a bit of a change in the next few days so it was now or god knows when. Anyway she was thrilled with her clip and I took a few pics (she doesnt look as big without all the hair  ) but I finally got a really good view of her udder now all the hair is gone and she is covered in some kind of fungus (at least it looks like that). If I scrape it with my nail it comes off. Is it a fungus or somthing else - I have never seen it before or come across it. If it needs treating I want to get it done asap. I clipped her as she is shedding SO much that she wont stop scratching (NO lice) and she was SO hairy that if she foals in the next week or two that all the foal might get is a mouthful of hair and I would be worried about impaction colic or somthing.
She is a lot happier now without all that hair underneath and was off bucking around like a mad thing.
She is still well insulated and kept in at night on chopped straw so she might feel a bit of a draft but otherwise she is fine.

Her udder doesnt seem to bother her and even when I scraped a bit of it she didnt care.
Still its odd and I would rather be rid of it before she foals. Going to a meeting re a show I am organizing and my vet will possibly be there so will quiz him on it

Actually it looks exactly like the stuff a few of mine get in ears, I forget what it was called, just that it was spread by gnats or something. I've never seen it on an udder though. If it is the same stuff I dont think you can ever really get rid of it. You can sort of scrape it down flat but the white spots will still be there.

Edit: called "aural plaques"
http://www.equidblog.com/tags/aural-pla…" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
here they do mention some can get them on the udder. Sissy and V have them in the ears and I just wipe them down of the white crud (I don't clip inside ears so you really can't see them anyway)

Those Aural Plaques do look like what Slaney has.
It is confined to the udder and just around that area and I have seen ringworm on horses and the cases I have seen didnt look like that.
Also none of the others have it - its just Slaney and just the udder area.

My vet wasnt at the meeting last night (was out on call) but I am emailing the pics to his wife at the surgery and I will get her to show them to him and I will be calling in later so might have an answer then or he might call out.
My farrier should be out today also and he is a fountain of knowledge so will get him to have a look too.

Showed the pix to hubby, and his said to try washing the area down with listerine (the original stuff, not the new fancified stuff in funny colours), if the vet doesn't have a suggestion...but then he said he's never seen anything like that either.

My vet had a look at the pics and thinks it might be some kind of fungus but he has sent the pics to a dermatologist to see what he thinks and will be back to me hopefully this evening.
Might try the listerene but will just wait and see what they vets come up with.

Try the Listerine, it is brilliant stuff to keep in your "bag" (you know, the one you always have at the stables!) but it will go away on it's own.
I don't clip because, well, I have been doing this all my life now, and I have never, ever, had a problem with it.
I know the Americans are great ones for it but I am happier thinking that my (unstabled) animals will be weather proof, and OK to turn back out three days after foaling.
The weather changes so quickly, and I have had naturally shedding animals get pretty near hyperthermic in the rain, at this time of year, without clipping them!!

Good luck with her, I think she has a way to go yet.....

Well spoke to my vet this morning and he said that it looks like Papilloma like they get on their noses which is what my farrier said too. He said it looks like its drying up and it should right itself. If it starts to get red and angry looking in the mean time then he said to give him a call or if it hasnt cleared in the next 3wks.

When I googled it the site said that Aural Plaques were thought to be a flat type of Papillomas so you were also on the money Morgan.

Should I still use the listerene in the mean time??

I didnt mention the listerene to the vet but what he said was he didnt really want to put anything on it as its such a sensitive area.

Just wanted to say that Slaney is happier then I have seen her in wks since she got her belly clip and she is in at night with a fleece rug on and she is on a bed of chopped straw and rubber mats. I know its not everyones cup of tea but I tend to keep the mares at the house for at least 3wks after they foal so they are always stabled at night.
This yr Slaney will be in a bit longer as she will be covered in hand again till Banner gets the hang of his job. She will be out by day and in by night.
I also think you are right RF she looks like she might hang onto this baby. Especially now all the hair is gone (I measured it and it was 2" long) from under her belly she looks a lot smaller and her bag has a way to go yet. But as she doesnt read the foaling manual rule book she might also change her mind

Oh I forgot about the nose kind! I had one pick that up at a trainers barn a long time ago. Vet had us trying some kind of freezing cream, which worked slightly but this horse was kind of hard to work with and after a few applications we weren't allowed to come near his nose with the stuff any more. :? They froze off the first snow the next winter though. :D (which he had just moved from Florida and seriously freaked him out :rofl ) I don't think listerine will do anything to them since it's a virus, that's better for the bacteria and fungusy stuff.

NZ Appaloosas Thu, 04/22/2010 - 18:27

Well, listerine IS designed to go in our mouths, which are pretty sensitive areas...I'd run it past the vet, just in case. I'm not sure how listerine would help with papillomas tho', other than the alcohol helping dry them out, maybe? Aren't papillomas viral, and listerine is only fungal/bacterial attacking... (excuse the brain as it's slightly disorganised...the last foal bred by my friend who passed away in February was just born, and I'm a little, what's the word, "kerflecked"?)

My thoughts exactly but I also though it would help to soften it as its quite crusty so I am only thinking of doing it for a few days to a week. I only put a small bit on with cotton wool - of course Slaney is trying to lick the oil out of the little bowel while I am doing the limbo
