If you can't beat them...

Join them! Frodo will be going for phantom training soon... We're hoping he'll get the "pre-breeding routine" down that he'll start to figure out that certain cues mean funtime and otherwise he'd better behave. We'll be dumping his "collections" unless we find a couple interested mare owners. I know of one that has a Clarwood Joyride daughter so he'll have one baby on the ground next year. I've not decided yet about rebreeding this year for me, but I'm thinking hard. We'll take him to a stallion station to have him trained to collect and Jane will take him there and several other places to work so he gets the idea of a time to work and a time to play. Crossing fingers he'll get the idea!

Sometimes it only takes a different headcollar or bit that you use during covering to let them know when it's appropriate or not. Hope it oes well, now an EC member posted a nice lookingTB or TB type mare that I thought would be perfect for him...will have a look.

Frodo's brilliant -- he should understand quickly. I was going to do the different halter thing with Cory but I don't even need to (at least not yet). If I take him out and lead him down the barn aisle he jogs a bit and might talk, but will not try anything unless I let him know it's okay. And I didn't even really work on a cue for "okay"... he just picks up my body language. Of course this was as a two and three year old. We'll see, now that he is a mature four year old.

Frodo is smart... I'm hoping he can override the little brain enough to catch on though!
Sara, I'm sure is was my inexperience that has made him what he is. Though Jane does say she's never met one she couldn't fix and she's up against it now. He's just really weird about this one area. He's beyond persistent.
We thought with all the showing he's been doing, he'd get the point that he's not getting any. So maybe this phantom training idea will help it sink in. Or at least give his big brain a chance to take over!

If you can, I would freeze and store these early collections, just in case. Still remember the story I heard from a breeder where they sold a promising stud colt, and he died in a freak accident not long after. They'd fortunately had his semen tested before he went off and still had it frozen and were able to give it to the owners to use after his death.

Besides, if he becomes wildy popular as a sire, you'll have a nice headstart!

I'm so excited!!! :bounce

I know of at least two mare owners that will be very excited as well!

If I didn't think Lacy x Frodo would be a TANK (in the bad sense)...

Hope it works out for you! He should catch on.. :bounce

And since this has been brought up, is there any special type of halter or anything that one would use for breeding? I am firm on Cisco not even looking or talking to the mares when he is in hand, so I want to make sure he has something that tells him when and where he can get the nookie.

There is a halter he'll use for only breeding times. We'll also add a chain as he doesn't use a chain any other time. She'll also do several runs to places without the special halter so he knows trailer rides don't equal nookie time!

Oh... I was always careful with treating him like a stallion rather than a cute pony. The problem came with his first breedings to Fortune that he turned into a spaz. Since she was a bit of a stretch for him, there was frustration built up. I didn't know any better and am hoping this new approach will teach him some patience. Plus with only using a phantom, I think that will help as well.

Thank you! Yes, if we can get him over this, he'll be a top pony for sure!

One has a lovely Thoroughbred mare (who looks like she could be splash) and the other has a gooorgeous blue eyed Haflinger mare.

I'll point them both over here.
