I have a new baby!

Not a foal, but....it's as close as I'm going to get for awhile! LOL [img]http://i694.photobucket.com/albums/vv309/Hijenks/May%202010/May001.jpg[…]

Okay, I know I am not the best photog in the world, so I am very practiced at "decyphering" pixs, but I still cannot figure out what your baby is? A duck? Kitten? Squirrel?
What's the story - you raising her?
Oh yes. It feels like I won the lottery! I've hatched other breeds before, but I heard these were difficult! Different humidity levels and shell thickness.....I am anxiously awaiting her(?) siblings! I chose her parents very carefully and lucked out I think with a breeder. 5 more have cracked their shells - or 'pipped' - as they say. There are 8 total of that breed in the bator, then there are some bantams that of the batch I put in with these, only 1 was good when I candled them last week. So...if the bantam one hatches, there will be one mini, and the rest these. 10 more minis are due next week, but the fertility rate does not look good on the minis(bantams). We shall see- but I'm going to do them separate next time. I think the high humidity for the marans may not be good for the bantams....

3 are out now!
Awesome. Somewhere along the way, I totally missed that you bred chickens!
I started not so long ago actually when I read a few things after speaking to a fellow member here some years ago and decided that my food would be as homegrown as possible - not over the top - but I do have gardens and just generally feel better about having grown what we have eaten, grown what the meat we eat has eaten, and have a hand in their well-being as well as their end. I really still have some issues I'm working through. Not the easiest thing ever because my entire family NOW has a true perspective on the reality of meat. Funny really that it's not thought of until you know the actual animal because you raised it.

My daughter joined 4H quickly and got us going to shows....yes -fer heaven's sake - chicken shows... where we just ..did well.

So. Easy to go from there.

Awwww.... now I want one. I alreday want a little pig and goat so Eddie would kill me... He kept saying NO MORE ANIMALS! Like having 4 horses (now 5), 2 dogs and 1 cat is too much... I showed him!!!! Now we have 4 & 1/4 horses! Ha... I showed him and didn't even know I was doing it! lol.

How big do those chicks get??

Either way, CHICKS ROOL and ROOSTERS DROOL!!!!!! :bounce :bounce

Jenks Sun, 05/02/2010 - 16:09

Ha! I know about the animals....I just think he can leave if he won't accept me. And now it's lucky that it's not another horse!

LOL

These actually get very large, Daylin has some bantams though (mini chickens) that are smaller than pigeon size. Her favorite roo:

This is the daddy of the chicks that hatched yesterday when he was 5 months old - I'm going to take a scale out to weigh him. I bet he weighs 10 lbs at least.

lovley pics!

when I was a kid dad used to grow a lot of what we ate, (only thing he didnt was red meats really) he is a keen fisherman, so we always had fresh reef fish and prawns and mud crabs, as well he grew a lot of vegies and fruits, and we had quails, chickens, pork (thats prob the only red meat, lol) pheasants, ducks & pigeons.

It was laways better eating fresh!

NZ Appaloosas Sun, 05/02/2010 - 20:49

Stef, tell He Who Thinks He Should Be Obeyed (but in reality is really He Who Should Obey! :rofl ) that chickens are well worth their money, as they give eggs in return. Nothing like farm fresh eggs for brekkie! And duck eggs make for extremely fluffy cake.

Danni Sun, 05/02/2010 - 21:07

LOL, that's cute! Same colouring but one really little, and one really big!! My chickens are bantams but not really mini ones. But still small compared to that giant one!!

My chickens are just mutts though  Considering I get the occassional silky feathered chicks, I figure there is silkey in there somewhere!! :D

Jenks Mon, 05/03/2010 - 10:35

I love silkies, but I worry about the maintenance with those type of feathers! I heard silkies are the only true (natural) bantam in the world and that their bones and meat are black. Also a very ancient breed as well....

I have a bunch of mutts too! I love em!~

I am having a mite battle right now with the big marans. They've been in quarantine since a show in March over it and the buggers are impossible to kill!!!

If it's not raining when I get home I'm going to dunk them in mite killer (permethrin). I've dusted them twice. I'm thinking of trying a systemic method if I can find one....

Dogrose Mon, 05/03/2010 - 14:10

My mother bred cuckoo marans when I was very small, they terrified me, they would steal food out of your hand, they were like velociraptors

They really are! You should see them rip the field mice to pieces when one dares to enter to eat their feed.

If they weren't so gross I'd let em loose in the barn for mouse control.

I have seriously considered trying for some golden cuckoos.....

Sara Mon, 05/03/2010 - 14:44

I just have to say, again, that Day is flipping cute. And also, I just got my first chicks! Hooray!

Sara Mon, 05/03/2010 - 15:12

Haha, I'm sure they're chick-mutts but I'll snap some pics. Dierdre got some photos of their, um, unusual housing when she was here. Oh Dierdre... want to post pics of the chickquarium?

Ya - they are now my husband's favorite animal - they eat fly larvae, rodents, and they feed you. Earn their keep!

Chick-mutts are awesome! I have some mutt Easter Eggers that are super-chickens. They need no extra anything, never get sick, nothing! knock-on-wood

Must see the chickaquarium! Found a use for it did ya? LOL

Let me know if you want some bantam eggs to hatch - I have them coming out my ying-yang.

The mini has pipped! There will be a mini to add to this bunch by tomorrow:

Let me know if you want some wheatens or splashes! I express mailed 13 marans eggs to OH last week - I can't wait to hear her hatch rate.... They don't guarantee next day delivery anymore on live or perishable items, but these made it next day.

Quail waterers? When I switch these to a cage, they'll have rabbit waterers! I use those on the bantams. They can't poop in them!

I can probably get them up by tomorrow if the OSU computers have the compatible software I need.

Yeh a few of mine have the black skin, I never ate any though to know what they are like inside!! Mine don't look anything like silkeys though, too much other breeds in there, but it's funny when a silkey feathered one appears! They don't seem to have any more trouble than the normal feathered ones though.

The rooster here is the dad of both the white silkey feathered one next to him and the black skinned reddish one below. Gives me lots of entertainment to see what colours I end up with!! :D

Chickens are quite fun really, plus you get eggs to eat!! Love your little chickies Jenks!!!

Edit as I can never remember whose pictures I refering too

Jenks Mon, 05/03/2010 - 20:42

OMG - That is awesome! I love them! That crested -? - one is too funny! And the chicks are out there?! Same hen or? One bantam and one large fowl? I love that penciled(?) look on the larger one! The colors are really amazing, add the textures and patterns and....well how fun can you get!? I can see birchen on the roo, the girl - OH must get out the chicken genetics book now. The white? GAH there is a recessive white....and...let me looky....silkie feathers are recessive too....
