Find me a mare!

I'm curious how people would think Frodo would cross on something non-Welsh. He's really versatile, but I'm thinking if I wanted to get a half-Welsh baby, what would be the best type of mare to use? I'd like the baby to do well in English type ridden events like jumping, pleasure, and such. I'm far from an expert on the differences in horse types for these events, so that's also why I'm asking. This is just a hypothetical as I'm not buying anything... But thought it would be fun to see what people would pair him with. He does have higher knee action than hock action. He's not a flat type mover. So does this mean he'd just not be a sire of these type ponies? Don't care about color at all. I think creme is out as it's frowned upon? I dunno. You can also say "Forget it!" LOL. I won't get upset! Have fun!

LOL. :rofl I knew you were going to say that! But I've seen Lacy and want new mares specifically picked for Frodo.

lipigirl Mon, 05/11/2009 - 16:35

Yep same as CC wants for her Welsh mare - TB x Welsh is a fab cross for that discipline.

Andrea Mon, 05/11/2009 - 16:52

Yeah, but Tickle and Frodo are totally different... A TB would accomplish the same thing in both ponies?

CMhorses Mon, 05/11/2009 - 16:56

I don't know about english riding but we have some QH and QH/TB crosses that would be lovely! I'd love a stout little western horse.

Andrea Mon, 05/11/2009 - 21:25

I think the build of the QH paired with Frodo may be a bit too thick and clunky?

Sara Mon, 05/11/2009 - 21:38

Andrea, I agree. I had a Welsh x AQHA for a while and she had the hardest time cantering nicely -- jumping was out of the question. I like the idea of a TB mare.

Are you going to train him to be collected? You get to keep the semen they collect at the training session and maybe there is a TB mare in your barn or your area who could use the trial dose. I was going to do this with a stallion in my area until he had an untimely demise. Anyway, you would want to do up a contract with the mare's owner that it was just a freebie trial and there was no live foal guarantee, but if no one uses it all those fancy swimmers go down the drain. ;)

Andrea Mon, 05/11/2009 - 22:02

When he comes home I'll train him to collect. Or rather one of the Stallion Stations will.
This topic was just to see what Frodo would cross well with for an eventer type foal. I was hoping for something fancier than TB :laugh1 But whatever works, huh?

Sara Mon, 05/11/2009 - 22:07

Huh?? What's fancier than a TB? The Thoroughbred is an improvement breed, used to refine and increase athleticism in multiple disciplines and multiple breed societies. It's my favorite breed, and I prefer all my personal riding horses to be at least half TB.

Oh, and you don't want to breed an eventer. Frodo's foals will be too small to be of interest to most eventers (don't jump all over me, I said most...) and event horses don't sell for nearly as much as hunters.

Not always true. Depends on the mare. Unfortunately not all QHs are stocky & big bootied!! :booty lol
QHs do jump, dressage (a lot of english...sorry don't know all the different "branches") cutting, reining, barrels & so on...not much a QH can't do.

But up to you, so good luck!

Sara Mon, 05/11/2009 - 22:28

It's true that Quarter Horses jump...

(favorite AQHA ever!!!)

but my preference as a breeder would not be to put two breeds together that could both use improvement or refinement from TB or Arab blood. I really like Appendix Quarter Horses. I really like Welsh x TB. I've not liked Welsh x Quarter Horse so much.

PamelaTX Mon, 05/11/2009 - 22:33

Lol I'm not a huge fan of TBs.
I like the stocky, short back, big bootied QHs!! Thats my ideal horse!! ;) :D
I don't believe QHs need improving from TBs or any other breed, but thats MHO.

Sara Mon, 05/11/2009 - 22:37

Diane, who??

Oh, and the Quarter Horse I posted is one I actually know and love in person. He has shown Junior Hunters and Children's Jumpers, won the OHJA medal many years back, and is now bopping around over crossrails with beginners. He has cushings but still does some light lessons and showing. I make a point of kissing his nose every time I see him.

NZ Appaloosas Mon, 05/11/2009 - 22:40

OMG, I feel sooooo old now! You don't know who 3s & 7s is????? First non-TB to win Olympic gold, ridden by Rodney Jenkins. Short little thing too, really funny to see a mop of red curls and two red ears coming at a line, and then sudden :bounce over the fence came a horse and rider, only to disappear again behind the next fence.

Now, I am pretty sure 3s & 7s was a mare, but the only one in the AQHA database registered under that name is a gelding...but then Broadcast News, NZ's appaloosa Olympic gold winner, was registered with a name like Guns & Ammo or something like that.

Got my terms crossed.
I thought eventer was a term for a general multi purpose jumping/pleasure/hunter horse?
No wonder I didn't fit in  Sorry... Couldn't resist :laugh1 Crack myself up! :booty

Sara Mon, 05/11/2009 - 22:45

hahaha, yeah, the AQHA and APHA names always have to be changed. I don't even know the name of the one in the picture. We called him Ragtime. I used to show an APHA when I was a kid who already had points under his registered name so my trainer couldn't change it. I was mortified to be showing "Rocoa Rey Bars" (sp???).

Oh, no problem! I got it now!

Andrea Mon, 05/11/2009 - 22:49

So an eventer is like Cross Country jumpers?
What is the difference between hunter and jumper?
Which ones are the 30K ponies... That's the one I want Frodo to produce :laugh1

Andrea Mon, 05/11/2009 - 23:02

So what do you look for in a hunter pony. Why is one better than the next?
Hunters judge rider and pony, is that right?

Andrea Mon, 05/11/2009 - 23:17

What is the desired height?
When you say only the pony is judged, is it based on a clear round or it's way of going?

Andrea Mon, 05/11/2009 - 23:35

Oh, OK. Welll I already have one of those :laugh1
Fortune is exactly that, but she's got too much chrome and would be unfashionable I think.

Krickette Tue, 05/12/2009 - 00:21

yeah, hunters are purdy, but....I've never had a horse that could even halfway pass as one, lol! Misty likes to try sometimes: http://i43.tinypic.com/312v5kw.jpg" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; http://i39.tinypic.com/jj03nb.jpg" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
it looks pretty till she canters or jumps, lol! She likes jumping, she's just not....tidy.
mostly i've had my ay-rab who, although pretty, is not a hunter horse. at shows he'd pretty himself and look like this: http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y291/P…" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; , but at home....we were here: http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y291/P…" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
(please don't hurt me, horrid eq is horrid. pretend i'm not there, look at the pretty overflexed pony!)

lipigirl Tue, 05/12/2009 - 03:55

In answer to your question I have ridden many TB x Welsh of all sorts of Welsh type and they have all been great ponies/horses to ride. ;)

Maigray Tue, 05/12/2009 - 06:15

Do you know what Thorwood breeds? Those are the top of the line show ponies you are thinking about.

Heather Tue, 05/12/2009 - 06:35

Andrea I have worked amoung the hunter ponys for a while now and can show you tons of crosses and pics of what they have and what is winning, some of the ponys have been LEASED for 100k a year and other for sale for 50k up... the average is 20k give or take... I have to run to work but drop me a PM and I will link you to lots of info reguarding the idea of crosses 8-) The market is still down , but when it recovers there is definately a endless market for daddys little girls ;) Its a whole different world.

Sara Tue, 05/12/2009 - 13:27

Keep in mind if you want to play this game you're going to be going to those $2,000 a pop shows and paying a big name hunter trainer which is going to run at least $1600 a month (as well as "paying" your child rider). The ponies commanding these prices are machines. The only amateur I know who plays it well (buying, showing, and selling ponies) is a physician. It is not unheard of for owners to pour $50,000-$100,000 a year into training and showing so... do the math.

When you look at a site like bigeq and see what they call "greens", those horses and ponies have been pounding around the circuit for years already. They're not what ordinary people think of as green! It's a word game. ;)

Andrea Tue, 05/12/2009 - 13:35

So what does one win from a show that costs $2000 to enter? Is it still a ribbon, or do you get money too?
