In case anyone was wondering

we're all good. Tuesday's quakes were a bit of mess maker, and an old man at a retirement villa has died (fell during one of the quakes and hit his head), several people have been hospitalised due to hypothermia from having electric heat pumps and no electricity courtesy of the quakes, and I think 6 or so people were hurt from falling debris, but only 2 people were trapped by collapsing houses and they were recovered. Christchurch Cathedral, on top of the damage left from February, has lost some 50% of its west wall) and the Timeball station is totally gone now. Horses are good, they all raised their heads during the 6.3 quake, neighed and stood still. You could actually see the ground undulate--it was friggin weird! Hubby was out in my car when the first one struck, and I was on the phone with him when the second one struck. It wasn't until he got back that I realised his truck had been shoved backwards by FOUR FEET! :-O :-O :-O

Wait, there were earthquakes? How did I not hear about this!?!?! I'm glad you're okay - it sounds like quite the adventure.

rodeoratdogs Wed, 06/15/2011 - 09:45

Glad your ok, I hadn't heard about these most recent quakes either, the last thing I had heard is that you had suffered some bad weather there after the original quakes. My goodness it's been so bad in alot of area's this year.

Monsterpony Thu, 06/16/2011 - 00:12

Wait, another earthquake?! How'd I miss this? Chch is going to be nothing but a pile of rubble if that keeps happening.

NZ Appaloosas Thu, 06/16/2011 - 05:50

Two earthquakes, guys, within hours of each other. First was a 5.5, second was a 6.3 (and hubby wore that one on his ears as I was talking to him when it hit.

MP, you won't recognise the city as it stands now. I don't know if you remember the stone church that was opposite the courthouse, but that's gone. The multi-story carpark next to the office was apparently slated for demolition after the Feb quake, can't tell how it is now cuz we can't get back into the office as Civil Defence has commandeered the park at the end of the street. The stone building where we did that funny dog-leg around the park (and that's the park where CD is now) is half gone--or was, last I saw, which was before Monday's quakes. Court house is still inaccessible.

Googling Christurch*2011 Earthquake*images gives you some of the best photos.

That is awful. The old fashioned architecture around the city was so beautiful. Poor Chch.

I'm glad your ok. I hadn't heard anything about it either but I've been traveling the past couple of days. Today is the first day we've stopped before midnight.

Diane I am so glad you are OK- I REALLY have to get a laptop- I am cut off like you cannot believe, down at the field. In one way it is lovely, getting up when it is light (OK maybe a bit after) going to bed when it is dark (Lying there watching a mare get fatter) and then something like this happens and I realise I have not seen a TV for eight weeks!
What is happening?
Is this the Apocalypse or is this normal?
I always thought NZ was a nice civilised place to live, no poisonous snakes, good weather, quite a few crazy Mini people (fit right in I would) and you even like Billy Connelly (or maybe you were humouring him) and now I find there are earthquakes!

Bannerminis Sat, 06/18/2011 - 16:34

Dont know how I missed the earthquakes too but it must be down to sick baby for the last 8 days and then I was sick and also watching a mare getting fatter and fatter too (from the comfort of my bed with the laptop beside me and that darn equipage going off in my ear more times then I care to count as Shimmer loves to sleep flat out).

Anyway I am so glad to hear that you are all ok. It must be so scary for you all. So sad to see beautiful buildings being destroyed or damaged.

Keep us posted and fingers crossed there will be no more quakes for another century or two.

NZ Appaloosas Sun, 06/19/2011 - 02:23

The "sad" part is, you get to the point where you pause to determine whether or not the next quake is something to worry about or not--takes about a nanosecond to make that decision. And you get good at ball-parking the magnitude. In fact, a lot of my Chch friends were laughing at the scientists who first called Monday's first one "just" a 5.0 and the second a 6.0.

I just wish things would settle down so that there can be some clarity as to what's happening where--there is talk about some neighbourhoods not being being able to be rebuilt.

Another 4.something last night about 1am. The problem with the quakes is that they are all so bloody shallow--the shallower the more damage.

critterkeeper Tue, 06/21/2011 - 19:09

It seems that Oz is getting more than your share of natural disasters of late... ~x( have you thought about relocating back to the US? Just not California, of course, but you's probably have fewer quakes, floods, etc... :-?

Praying the weather mellows out and returns to normal (not that anyone knows what "normal" is anymore)... :ympray:

NZ Appaloosas Tue, 06/21/2011 - 20:36

Wrong place, CK, LOL We're about 1400 or so kilometres from Oz

Had another doozy last night around 10:30ish, 5.4 and I want to say 8km deep. Originally said 5.3 and 12km, but this morning they revised it. Not sure how this revision stuff works. On my way out soon to visit the stepgrandson, poor thing had to have surgery today (tonsils, I think) and he probably wasn't thrilled with last night's event (just turned 6, so you know how that goes).
